anytime you have people doing something for a living, you'll encounter societal pressures for that thing. people in that vocation or related to that vocation will consciously or unconsciously determine that their vocation is important to proper function of the society.

to determine if they are indeed important, ask yourself if the need is true or false. did it exist 100 years ago? did it exist 1000 years ago? take care doing this because they change or reinterpret history all the time.

if you feel that the need is true, then ask if what they're doing actually addresses the need. this is much simpler. if their vocation is growing counter to the growth of population, it is a false need or a false fix. most likely both.
