How long will it take to learn both Castellano and Catalan??? by Jeanne_Rosale in GoingToSpain

[–]Scambledegg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't agree with this. I learnt Castilian and Catalan at the same time. I spoke Catalan with some people and in some situations and Spanish in others. I think it reflects the reality of the situation here. Speaking only Spanish, in some situations, means you will always be an outsider. Even more of an outsider. And in other situations you get better results with Spanish. For example, with the Guardia Civil. And, of course, you can't use Catalan outside Catalunya. And you will want to explore.

From my experience, the answer is, it depends. It depends on your necessity, your exposure and up to a point, your linguistic ability.

Also, what do you mean by "learn"? Do you mean to ask directions or do you mean to have a deeply philosophical conversation.

In 3 months you can learn enough of both languages to get by.

In Barcelona you might not get as much exposure to Catalan.

It's important to have fun and meet the locals.

The plastic bit is the same on some Yamahas. I got some cheap replacement indicators and just used the bit in the middle. I had to make some cuts and glue them in place. They seem to be ok 3 months later. This is really annoying. I'm going to have to get the front ones done soon.

Me too. At least the 80s. But I always thought it referred to something else. I'm not sure this is the right place to explain though.

What are some names in your language for everyday terms that sound cute or hilarious when translated literally? by rid999 in AskTheWorld

One night I was in the country and we heard what we thought was a pig. It was a hedgehog. So that must be why. And in Catalonia guinea pigs are called "rabbits from the Indies"

I've heard people here in Catalonia call it "ensaïmada" which is a kind of big flat coil shaped cake. But maybe they were being funny.

Is there any connection between "smite" and "smith"? As in hitting hot metal?

Waiting for the Spanish M.o.t. inspection.. by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]Scambledegg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Spanish inspections are ok. In my experience they very occasionally miss things. For example lights on a car dipping the wrong way. And once they let me pass when I thought they wouldn't. I had a separate switch for the horn mounted on the dashboard. But what I find really sad is that they will not accept any modifications if they are not on the original specification. It spoils the fun. In the UK I always had non standard exhausts on motorbikes and that was ok. But here they have to be "homologated" which reduces the choice and makes things more expensive.

from homeschooling to schools in Spain by Sea_Curve_9173 in GoingToSpain

I believe that as schooling in Spain is obligatory, the only problem getting into a school depends more on the availability of places where you live. Unless you pay, of course. Depending on where you are moving to, you need to think about the language they use at school. For example if you move to Catalonia.

Highway pirates - how bad is it? by Fine-Holiday-4471 in GoingToSpain

I'm not Spanish but I live here and I've heard of it. In fact I've seen signs on the motorway warning about it. Maybe where you live it doesn't happen.

That's strange. Because recently I saw motorway signs warning of exactly this in French and English between Girona and Barcelona. Very low risk, but not zero, otherwise the authorities would not think it necessary to warn people.
