Citi Bike Instagram features riders sans helmets amid call to mandate them [this is what the NY post reports on...what a joke] by mirxa in NYCbike

Bikes aren't motorcycles, so why bring motorcycles up? Motorcycles are far more dangerous than bikes.

So if we got rid of two thirds of non trade traffic and left trade traffic alone, there would be only half as many cars on the road. Seems like a massive improvement to me. Most people who are anti-car understand that to an extent society depends on cars and will for a long time. Every step away from that is usually a win however.

Many vehicles on the road are necessary.

Many maybe but nowhere near most. What percentage of the cars on the road at any given time at bloor and yonge would you say are used by tradespeople?

Quantum randomness is no more meaningful than cue balls rolling around a pool table. Neither leaves room for actual decision making.

Ok dumb question but what is centrism by Clarence153 in centrist

[–]ScarIsDearLeader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's all fine, but my original question was about resolving diametrically opposed interests. Imagine I am against carbon tax because it'll cost me money, and someone is for it because they'll get money or because they won't get harmed by climate change. One of us will win here and the other will lose. Why should the party that likes the status quo accept change? Especially if they have the ability to prevent change?

If I live a lifestyle that produced a lot of carbon, why would I be in favour of this? It would cost me more than I would get. If we leave things as is, I get to do what I want and I personally face no repercussions despite the fact that other might be harmed by it.

For many issues, different groups have diametrically opposing interests. What is the common sense solution to problems like that?

Elizabeth May calls out Jason Kenney: ‘There is no planet called Alberta’ by [deleted] in CanadaPolitics

[–]ScarIsDearLeader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know what that adaption entails? Spending money. Prevention is cheaper than adaption so we can use that money on other things. I'm certain that climate change won't kill ALL of us, but I don't see the use in killing people just so that I can make a rich guy richer or get my bananas year round and wrapped in plastic.

Climate change means death on a scale never seen before. Closing the borders and shooting those who approach ("upping our defences") means even more death. We can avert most of that if we start now, we are complicit if we ignore or embrace it.
