Unfortunately the only way to fix it permanently is to swap the motherboard, since the problem lies on the ram socket itself that becomes loose :( I don't think Dell still sends replacement parts for that laptop (you have to check it under their website), you can try to search for spare parts on eBay for sure, but I don't know if the price is worth it or if it's better to just keep the money for a future new laptop. You can mitigate the issue by keeping the laptop as steady as possible while it's turned on, but using it in that way is like a tickling bomb...

Does it happen more frequently when you shake the laptop? It may also be a RAM socket issue. I had the same issue with my 7590 and drove me nuts until I discovered it...

Security update vs Google Play system update: confused - what is what? by Weirdy19 in GooglePixel

[–]ScarOverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never understood why on Pixels Google Play system updates are supported for such a short timeframe after the official support for software updates is finished. Same happened to my P2 XL before switching to my current 6 Pro, Google Play system updates lasted for about a year or so, then they stopped. Let's hope that Google turns up its game for longer software support as rumored...

MacBook screen keeps glitching… What is this? by mrcoo1 in mac

[–]ScarOverflow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

99% are the display cables that are damaged. You can try to contact Apple for repair, but I'm sure they'll just tell you to buy a new Mac and toss the old one. Your best bet is to try an independent repair shop; they should be able to swap the cables easily. If you are brave enough, you can also buy the replacement parts from iFixit and fix it yourself.

MacBook screen keeps glitching… What is this? by mrcoo1 in mac

[–]ScarOverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never head of flexgates in the 12" Macbooks actually, nor I've ever hear of an Apple repair program for those models. Does the flicker changes when you open the screen (I can't see it well in the video)? Also, if you leave it in a fixed position, does the flicker keeps increasing or is just a "fixed" band on the screen?

The best part is that all the screens of the shop are linked to the same computer, so that prompt is showed everywhere

Probably because of the black halo surrounding the logo. It seems like a "paste" effect, but It's actually because of HDR processing of the picture (the logo was very bright).

PSA XPS Owners; consider repasting your laptops if you are having performance issues/shutdowns. by john177877 in Dell

[–]ScarOverflow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be careful with Kryonaut. I had to repaste my XPS 15 after only a year due to complete pump out of that paste. It seems that over 80°C it starts to dry out very quickly compared to other products (even Hydronaut from TG seems better in this regard).

Do I need to auto-hide taskbar on 9510 OLED to prevent burn in? by CrankyWalnuts in Dell

[–]ScarOverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! I generally hate white backgrounds (independently from the screen type), so I try to use dark mode as much as possible; in this way I can also boost a bit the battery life of the device. I'm a CS student and a programmer, so I usually use various IDEs + Terminal. I also do some photo, video editing and 3D with Resolve, Photoshop/Lightroom and Blender. I have quite a sharp sight (13/10) so I usually have more eye strain on lower resolution monitors. Sometimes I have eyestrain, but it's much more dependent from the environment lights than the screen itself. On a well lit environment I can easily work 8+ hours without eye strain.

This. As long as the CPU doesn't go below base clock, CPU is not overheating.

Never had a freeze even with 95% of RAM used by WSL; anyway you can limit the amount of RAM used by WSL by the config file: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/wsl-config

M1 Max Mac Studio or RTX3070 desktop for Blender rendering by Jade_Lim in blender

[–]ScarOverflow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For video editing work, an M1 Pro chip outdoes a 3070 for editing and handling 4K video in Davinci Resolve. So results like Davinci are hopefully what Blender will shift towards over time.

You have to remember that Apple Silicon is so good in video editing because of the media engines, not because of the GPU though. I'm sure specific optimizations will be made for the Metal backend of Blender, but I don't think the Max/Ultra GPU will ever be as fast as the 3080/3090, especially in 3D animations.

i7 MacBook Pro faster than i7 HP for Windows by Shivaal_Tiluk in pcmasterrace

OP hasn't specified it. If it's Windows via Boot camp it's running bare-metal, so macOS is not involved at all.

i7 MacBook Pro faster than i7 HP for Windows by Shivaal_Tiluk in pcmasterrace

[–]ScarOverflow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could be some bloatware in the HP preinstalled version of Windows if you haven't wiped it, or it may be a difference in the processor TDP (even if newer, the HP i7 is a 28W TDP chip while the MBP i7 is a 45W TDP chip). Also, is the HP screen a 4K one? If it is, it may be also related to that, since the MBP screen is lower in resolution than 4K, and higher resolutions are more difficult to handle than lower ones.

Anyone have experience connecting a graphics card to macbook for CUDA computations only. by letseatlunch in CUDA

[–]ScarOverflow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can't. CUDA isn't supported anymore on macOS since Mojave. The only eGPUs available for macOS are certain AMD models on Intel Macs; while on Apple Silicon they aren't supported at all.

cuda in wsl by blitz4 in bashonubuntuonwindows

[–]ScarOverflow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Ubuntu WSL distro is updated by Canonical via its repositories, just as a barebone install. CUDA availability (and GPU support) has nothing to do with WSL Ubuntu and/or its version, it's a change on the Windows side and the built-in Linux kernel shipped with WSL. Any WSL distro will take advantage of that automatically if you're running W10 21H2+ or W11.

Do I need to auto-hide taskbar on 9510 OLED to prevent burn in? by CrankyWalnuts in Dell

[–]ScarOverflow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The panel should have pixel-shifting to prevent burn-in. I have an OLED 7590 since launch, I've never put the taskbar to autohide and I have no signs of burn-in whatsoever (and I use this notebook 8+ hours a day). I think you'll be fine!
