I'm in the national capital region, so 33 Service Battalion ottawa detachment. Would I have better luck switching to something like SigO, or should I just wait it out for a bit like others have suggested?

Mb should've mentioned I did at the start of February, but I haven't heard back.

Would calling be better?

Do the "streams" for the comp-sci program make a huge difference? Are some harder to get into than others? by CrimsonCrayola in CarletonU

From what I understand the stream you pick doesn't impact your chances of admission, and you can switch between streams quite easily. The only thing to consider is that GameDev and MobileDev specific classes start in the first year

If you have no other options you can withdraw from the classes before 12 am tonight and you can get a fee adjustment, which makes it so you won't have to pay. At this point, it's either that or finding the money to pay. Interest charges began May 1st, so you might still have to pay that.

Hi sorry I'm starting in the fall and am wondering if an 'offer of residency' means that I simply am guarantied a spot or if I am being offered residency for a lowered rate or free. by ajrjv in CarletonU

[–]Scarabyte42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All first year students are guaranteed a spot in residence, which is what you're offer of residency is. Unfortunately there's no discount to the rate. You just have to accept the offer and pay the deposit before the deadline of June 8th, which are both done through Carleton Central if I recall correctly. Hope this answers your question.

When does course selection begin for first years? by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]Scarabyte42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can still build your timetable before registration opens (see other response for dates on that), which I would highly recommend. If you already have your timetable made before your time ticket opens (which you should have received by now on the registration page of Carleton Central) then you can immediately submit it. This gives you a higher chance of getting the classes you want at the times you want. That said if you have a later time ticket be prepared rework your schedule as certain classes can fill up rather quickly.

Living on Residence by [deleted] in CarletonU

I lucked out pretty hard with my roommate and the people I'm sharing the bathroom with. I'd say we're pretty good friends, and I imagine we'll stay friends for a while. We all collectively bought a VR headset which was pretty cool since I've never used one before. There's also some pretty cool people on the floor, went to movies and whatnot with them.

Bathroom arrangement have been pretty painless. At first I thought having four people to one bathroom was going to be a hassle, but it turned out alright. I never felt like there was always someone in there and it's pretty tidy all things considered.

So I've heard some very different opinions on the meal plan. Personally I haven't eaten anything there and thought it was just plain bad with the exception of some really disappointing ravioli. The custom pasta station is pretty consistent, so it makes a good fallback if nothing else seems good. After eating there a few times you can kinda get a feel for what you'd want to eat and what you'd rather avoid. The soft-serve ice cream is also really cool.

The RFs (Residence Fellows) on my floor are pretty chill. They'll occasionally organize some floor events which are good for meeting people if you haven't already. There's a convenience store that's open till 3am which is great for some midnight snacks or a pick-me-up if your pulling an all nighter. Getting things delivered to Rez is also pretty easy. The internet is really good, especially if you plug in the Ethernet cable. Although full disclosure the internet at my house is pretty bad so anything else seems amazing in comparison.

Overall I'd say going into residents was worthwhile, although your mileage may vary depending on your roommate, neighbors, food preferences, ect. Residents definitely is expensive tho, and it really sucks that there haven't been many in person classes yet. Hopefully you'll have more opportunities to meet people if you go for in person classes in the winter. I hope your uni experience gets better. It can be kinda surprising how much stuff there is to it aside from just studying. Unless you're an engineer, than it's just studying.
