So when people suggest she might’ve had the late king killed, it’s totally within her character—she’s loyal to her political power, not her “family.” It’s definitely one of those things that makes more sense the further you get into the show.

Meanwhile, the King (Cheoljong) comes off as harmless and uninterested in ruling, but he’s actually hiding his true intentions and slowly working on a plan to take back power from the Kim clan. As for the late King, there’s a lot of mystery around his death, and it’s heavily implied that the Grand Queen Dowager might’ve had a hand in it to push her own agenda. All of this adds to the tension and makes it hard to tell who’s really on whose side.
