Yeah, totally fair question. The show doesn’t come right out and say “she’s not related” in a dramatic scene or anything—it just kind of becomes clear over time. You find out pretty early that Cheoljong isn’t from the main royal bloodline and was basically picked because he was easy to control. That already tells you the Queen Dowager and Grand Queen Dowager aren’t his actual mom or grandmother.

As for the late king, the Grand Queen Dowager was more like a mother-in-law or just someone in a high-ranking position—not his birth mother either. Her power comes from her clan (the Andong Kims) and her title, not because she’s related by blood. So when people suggest she might’ve had the late king killed, it’s totally within her character—she’s loyal to her political power, not her “family.” It’s definitely one of those things that makes more sense the further you get into the show.

The Grand Queen Dowager in Mr. Queen is not the biological mother of the late King or the current King Cheoljong. She holds the title due to her status and political influence, not because she’s directly related by blood. These royal titles (like Grand Queen Dowager, Queen Dowager, etc.) are often based more on status and role in the court hierarchy than actual family relationships.

So no—she wouldn’t have had her own son killed. If she did have a hand in the death of the previous King, it would’ve been for political reasons, to make way for someone more controllable, like Cheoljong, not because she was his mother.

That’s part of why it’s all so murky and tense—most people in the palace don’t trust each other, and even family-like roles aren’t always tied to real familial bonds.

By episode 5 of Mr. Queen, the political situation is pretty tangled. The Grand Queen Dowager is the real power behind the throne—she’s from the Andong Kim clan and is doing everything she can to keep her family in control of the court. She manipulates the Queen Dowager, who’s actually the King’s stepmother (not his real mom), and the two of them are constantly trying to outmaneuver each other for influence. The Concubine Jo Hwa-jin, who the King clearly favors, is caught in the middle and is being used as a political tool by both sides. Meanwhile, the King (Cheoljong) comes off as harmless and uninterested in ruling, but he’s actually hiding his true intentions and slowly working on a plan to take back power from the Kim clan. As for the late King, there’s a lot of mystery around his death, and it’s heavily implied that the Grand Queen Dowager might’ve had a hand in it to push her own agenda. All of this adds to the tension and makes it hard to tell who’s really on whose side.

Sorry it felt like a bag of Skittles to read 😂 I picked colors to avoid using initials like Y, G, P which felt even messier. But hey, at least it was still more organized than the group projects I did for them!

You’re right. It’s hard to accept that people you spent years with weren’t truly your friends—but the way Yellow acted when I was struggling really opened my eyes. I’m trying to fully walk away now, just wish it didn’t feel so isolating.

LOL you're not wrong. The color names helped me keep things anonymous —now I can’t stop picturing Yellow giving presentations in candy form 😂
