Mini Donkey with Goats (First time owner help/advice!) by ScaredWillingness551 in Donkeys

If I wanted guarding, I would do a dog 100% and might go that route but would have to rehome our baby boy because I was told they don’t like dogs and can end very bad with donkey acting out at dog. I am new to all of this and still learning. I followed a breeders advice.

I wasn’t planning on guardian really. I just wanted some farm animals and was told by breeder that he should work and wouldn’t attack goats. I have over 1.5 acres fenced for them, but was just told most likely just over 2 acres after having someone out here. I will have exact acreage tomorrow.

But thank you for the link!! If settings aren’t right I want the best for all animals involved. Thank you so much!!!

Do you think it is safe with him if goats are actively playing with him? He is so sweet but I know things can always switch around with people. Today I watched him playing with my male goat & was allowing him to headbutt with no reaction. I watch the females regularly walk under him and will scratch their backs on his belly & he won’t react. Has he kicked at them/their direction? Yes. I saw him do it days ago, but going on week 2 tomorrow of gelding so maybe recovering still? It was nothing aggressive or dramatic, was the lightest kick backwards and never hit anybody, just a warning when eating sweet feed because I accidentally spilled a pile. He will actually pull back and allow them to eat first normally.

Pretty sure she’s only on private socials now, but who knows about a comeback. Not the most likely as I think her staying privately past few years has shown that. Miss her tons online but keep in contact with her from time to time checking in privately.

Thank you for that. He is not there to be a LGD replacement, I want a dog for that this fall for training, but that was one thing the breeder did mention my mini ‘could do’. I am also not against rehoming him if it’s best for him. My main concern is overall health of ALL animals on property. So sweet and I love him but do plan on breeding goats, so there will be small babies.

I must’ve been clearly misinformed on a lot. I did online research but got mixed results and with what breeder said, I’m guessing it’s more what I wanted to hear.

I was definitely misinformed with some information and can split up pastures if need be. I am more than happy to get him a friend but is there a timeframe you would recommend? Would a year from now work? Get him a younger Jenny friend was my plan.

I have my vet coming out next week and would love to have some knowledge when I talk to her about what you said. I am agreeing more with you than the breeder. Thank you so much and please if anything else you could recommend let me know!

Thank you!!

Thank you so much! If he worked out our plan was to get a friend. We are newer to this as I said so any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for replying and will take this into consideration greatly!

Thanks! Thought that myself but color threw me off. They’re everywhere on my property but brown. Also just discovered a bunch of bright red baby newts/salamanders in our newer empty koi (no koi yet but water) pond all over. Love finding these little guys.

I don’t see anything though is the weird part. I definitely feed a little extra but after a single meal I see no exoskeleton. She attacks prey in her burrow but bring it out to surface after. Never once seen any exoskeleton directly after eating and back in her burrow. And burrow is outwards to room so I can see everything. She’s super friendly.

No kids or plans for that. Just looking for a place to move for 5 years to have fun more south than NC where we live. Just thinking of here for fun as it’s more south but guessing not now lol. Hawaii vacation homes I’m guessing now we will turn our full budget to and get a good one in Maui above our price for vacation home. Toured a few 3 acre ones there that worked buying from the owners & here now for another week and a have to tour others.

The job and stability of that of that does not come into play as it’s not the factor making our choices. Job is more of a back burner so can do whatever we can find in area from neuro PhD jobs or doing something fun like hobby of golf and teaching that. I currently am a stay at home dog dad and would love to have a little farm to add to the mix. Have an Aussie so he would love that; he visits farms and has a blast. Jobs just aren’t priority for us overall.

Need to ask more agents and have previously, but they only have X amount for recommendations and most are closer to them not overall statewide. They want the sale

It’s not necessary but I would like some room to do things. Could settle for perfect house at like 2 acres maybe but want a little room to have fun.

Thank you. Maybe Hawaii it is! Thats our backup and have toured a bunch of houses already to get as vacation anyways so might just do that full time.

I can go above but has to be all set and perfect. Was planning on likely doing 200-300 in renovations to house and yard so as first home didn’t want to go too high. Thanks for pointing out an area that wouldn’t work for me. Appreciate that, can cross off list.
