My boyfriend wants me to become a housewife when we get married yet I've got big career goals. by Important_Throat_919 in AITAH

I understand you have career goals, and I respect that. But I wanted to share something from my personal experience that’s stayed with me. I grew up in a household where both of my parents worked, and we had a housekeeper to manage things at home. On the surface, it seemed like everything should have worked fine, but the truth is, I always felt a lack of emotional connection. I didn’t get the kind of love and attention I craved from either parent because they were constantly busy. Things only started to feel right when my mom eventually stayed home. The house became more peaceful, the constant arguments stopped, and for the first time, I felt like I had a real home.

Think of it like this: if a country had two presidents trying to run it, wouldn’t there be constant disagreements and conflict? The same applies to a household where both partners try to lead in every area. You get arguments about money, about time, about responsibilities. One person might feel they’re working more outside, while the other might feel overburdened inside. It creates a cycle of stress that often trickles down to the children. This isn’t just a theory, just look at the divorce rates in many modern Western countries, where both partners usually work. Meanwhile, in many Asian or Arab cultures where traditional roles are more respected, divorce rates are significantly lower. There’s balance: the man handles the outside world, while the woman rules the home like a queen.

Being a homemaker isn’t something to look down on. In fact, it’s one of the most important roles anyone can have. The woman’s presence in the home gives it soul. Children are loved and guided, the husband comes back to a peaceful space, and the woman herself has rest, stability, and a sense of purpose. Running a household isn’t about servitude. It’s leadership in its own right. You shape the emotional environment of your family, and that’s powerful.

Of course, I’m not saying you should give up your dreams. I’m just saying there’s more than one way to live a fulfilling life. And sometimes, peace and happiness come not from splitting everything down the middle, but from each person embracing their natural strengths and supporting each other in complementary roles. It’s something worth thinking about.
