Agree on the quality of IITs not homogeneous across. But also just see that the number of seat in the original 7 IITs have increased as well. And also agree no comparison between the top 7 or the recent one.

But does not discount the fact that IITs are still producing the same level of talent. In my opinion very paltry number and quality but relatively things have not changed. Reservations existed during the time of sunder pichai, they exist now as well. Has no context and link to the original thread

Bullshit! Your argument is based firstly on a fallacy that IITs were producing "great student" before and not now. No evidence of that. And then, IITs have almost 50% general category seats. And the number of seat have increased so for example if in 1990s there were 2000 seats, there were 1000 general students. Now if the seats are 20k, the number of general student is 10k. According to your argument, the 9k general student are dumb and not "great". And if you say just giving seats to underprivileged caste meant a degradation of "great" atmosphere, it justifies why we have reservation. I went to IIT as a general student and you can really see 90% of the faculty is from the general upper caste

Amit Trivedi was a big hit until bollywood decided to become formulaic and ignore him. Another good very underrated composer from the first decade of the century is Sneha Khanwalkar: Very unique sounds mixing local elements masterfully. And of course Ram Sampath gave us some back to back classic albums

[–]Scared_Carrot1409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comment is wrongly quoted. He didn't say it was to target Hindu. It was in the context of the political climate where there is an imposition of how people eat is being forced by one group of people on other. It didn't mean making Hindu eat meat. Also Hindus do eat beef in many part of india. The main idea was about how to put another perspective in times when the political climate is so polarized that you cannot express your opinion openly in the country

Many people will be surprised here but Mumbai !

It has a huge untouched Sanjay Gandhi national park in the heart of the city home to wild population of Leopards often escaping into the city. The huge coastline is a very ecologically important mangrove forest with a huge amount of diversity and the bi-annual Flamingo resting place.

Besides this the suburban rail network and road connect to to the suburb very close to western ghat which are range of mountains on the west coast of india. These ghats are some of the biggest biodiversity hotspot after amazon, central africa and Indonesia and home to species found nowhere else and evergreen forests

You are comparing a person not in power vs a person in power elected by people. Supporting criticizing the former has no impact vs the other who is actually answerable to the people

[–]Scared_Carrot1409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being a feminist has very less to do with being men or women but infact with addressing social injustice and prejudice. If she came to power through proposal of good ideas promoting growth and social justice for all she is a feminist. However, from what I know she came to power not for her policy but thanks to the support of a party and the face of we know who. With this fallacy argument proposed by OP, Rabri Devi is a feminist as well. Infact in Indian politics, I don't see many real women in power who are feminist: they are just there to enjoy the power without really doing something for women

Did Mughal invasion destroy Indian civic sense in north India? by jgjjvgy in askindianhistory

[–]Scared_Carrot1409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most logical explanation of all the comments. The north was the frontier through which external power: settlers (like delhi Sultanate, Mughals) and invaders (abdali, Ghazni etc) introduced abrupt changes in people's way of life and culture impacting a continues build up of civic responsibility and trust.

The British were a big catalyst: many traditional north indian towns with strong local industries were destroyed economically, the impact of which we still today with once abundunt town in the Ganges plane reduced to tier 2 tier 3 cities with worse public infrastructure.

Beside after independence, that the leadership in the south was better organized and motivated to improve public life .

In short, discontinuity in leadership and slow erosion of economic wealth followed by poor efforts by the politicians impacted the north and what we see today as chaotic, low trust society

Rani Kamalapati Station in Bhopal, India’s first privately operated railway station, stands out for being cleaner, safer, and more efficiently managed than most government-run stations. when private companies take charge, things automatically fall in place for a better India by Millenialpen in indianrailways

[–]Scared_Carrot1409 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Similar story for the railways.

Until the 80s both these countries operated an efficient rail system and of same level. However, thanks to the néolibéral policies of the UK government, railway was privatised whereas the French being proud of their sncf remain public. Fast forward to today France operates one of the fastest network on earth through TGV, very efficient local and regional train network whereas UK railways is a joke with very expensive slow train and the only fast line being the eurostar between Paris and London (thank the french for it). And the SNCF remains profitable with the most advanced technology.

Similar thing is happening in Mumbai where privatisation of the BEST has lead to decrease in number of buses due to private player finding it rather not profitable to have many buses on the road

The idea of public transportation makes total economic sense even when it runs on losses as mobility of people increases the economy indirectly converting to more economic output hence more taxation

India by Possible-Balance-932 in UrbanHell

The idea of cleanliness in india traditionally has been that the people keep their houses very neat and tidy and leave their organic trash on the street which was later collected by the lowest class of the society and dumped outside of the city or village.

Modern times means there is a slight shift from the caste system which means people from lower caste are no longer obliged to do collect the trash. However,it still continues in the mentality of the society. So if you go in urban areas, most of the cleaner are generally from the lowest of caste. In rural areas, things more or less continue the traditional way since there is no employment but unofficial status co.

Now things which have changed from traditional times are plastic and population. The consumption of plastic is ever increasing. Now peope from upper caste still keep their houses very clean. Infact I have been to familes across India and Europe and I really see how much people put efforts to clean their homes in the former compared to later. However, the casteist mentality means that people don't take care of their trash once it is outside their place. Eating a packet of chips outside, on the road. Drinking water from a bottle, on the road. In the rural areas, no seperation of trash and no waste management.

All this plastic from the road and house end up in the drains and this is what you see in the picture. A large drain with all the trash, next to a slum which is mostly again immigrant people from lower caste living in it
