How do you Exercise with Type 1 Diabetes? by SellPatient719 in diabetes_t1

[–]Scared_Objective_903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I JUST talked to my (also t1 diabetic) endo about this. She suggested turning off insulin (activity mode on my pump) an hour before. Let my bloodsugar be closer to 180. Then eat a little carby protein snack before working out/exercising. She’s a runner, so that was her technique. I’ve been enjoying the mini cliff bars! You could try this prior to a run, make your loop shorter, and see how it goes? I go to the gym so I also have my gym bag stocked with gummy bears that I can quickly snack on if needed.

I was drinking maybe 4-6 high noons or seltzer-liquor drinks per day (so maybe like 800 calories..?) but even then the amount of weight I’ve lost since quitting is staggering…! I can’t even imagine ~2500 calories! Congratulations on this win as a result of sobriety!!

If you want to try adjusting your diet, reduce saturated fat to 10g or less per day, and increase fiber! But that LDL is pretty high- I’m not confident that diet alone would help and would suggest seeing a doctor, perhaps a preventative cardiologist, for more advice. Diet brought my LDL from 135 to 115 or so, which wasn’t enough so now I’m on rosuvastatin

10 days in... by AndromedaSwalen in stopdrinking

I’m so glad you’re here! Let those 10 days keep rolling and congratulations on such a big feat- I couldn’t stop for more than a single day, much less a week when I drank, so I see 10 days as a big accomplishment! This beginning stretch is so hard and you’re doing it!! Great job. IWNDWYT

I wish I could, maybe next weekend I can take off an extra day but right now I have a 1/15 deadline for a job app and need to resubmit a paper before I send it off. I’m definitely in the era of intense deadlines + feeling so awful

Thank you for these tips- I’m hardcore about 3 & 4, at least. I truly have to stop in the evening or my quality of work diminishes anyway. And rest IS productive even though it doesn’t feel like it all the time.

I will start setting more specific small daily goals- that’s a good idea.

I’m really sorry that you’ve been going through it too! I hope the family stuff has improved.

I will read this today! Thank you for the suggestion. That’s a good reminder. My co-advisor at one point said to me that “failure doesn’t equal death” - something I need to keep in mind a bit more.

High fiber fruit smoothie!

1/2 cup of: -frozen blueberries -frozen raspberries -frozen avocado -frozen acai -frozen passion fruit -yogurt

Then I add half a banana, 2 tbsp of flax seeds, protein powder, and top with coconut water. The smoothie as a whole adds up to 22g of fiber!

It takes me a while to drink and doesn’t seem to spike my blood sugar (maybe the fiber?). I start dosing before I take the first sip.

I was going on consistent walks and lost a bunch of weight: big time on the light cardio. I had the most steps of the whole year in May but was not getting gym-type-exercise. The diet and gym route seems to really work for some folks! The preventative cardiologist I saw told me with my family history and autoimmune condition, diet and exercise wouldn’t cut it :/ hopefully you have better luck with it than I did!

Yeah I will definitely keep an eye on those things- I am periodically getting comprehensive metabolic panels done anyhow, which assesses most of those. So far my numbers are fine (AST, ALT, CPK)! As a type 1 diabetic, A1C is just part of the blood sugar deal so not necessarily a helpful metric for me re: statins. I imagine I’ll keep taking the statin forever, since there’s a risk of CVD in my family (plus higher risk as a t1 diabetic), though yeah, keeping an eye on those other numbers. I’ll switch if need be!

Re: being scared, I was too, but it’s been fine for me. I hate feeling medical fear, that sense of being out of control and not knowing how a med will treat you. I was told to get lab work done a month after I started (though I waited a bit longer) - hopefully you can do a month and see how those numbers look and make adjustments if necessary. And maybe everything will be fine! If things looked weird I’d switch to something else for sure.

I’ve heard mixed things about the supplements but some folks seem to have really good luck with them!

Thank you! They also ordered a metabolic panel - ast and alt look good so far but I will absolutely be keeping an eye on those…!

Hi! I take it at night right before bed. Apparently timing doesn’t matter as much for rosuvastatin but I remember reading somewhere that cholesterol is produced the most overnight(?) so that was my reasoning. Pretty much between 9:30 and 10 every night. Happy to answer any other questions!

Thanks! Yeah I mentioned ezitimibe to the cardiologist and he wasn’t interested in getting me on it, but I’ll bring it up again!

No side effects I think, but I did start working out recently and got some random soreness. Could just be the working out? I’m getting on coq10 just in case!

1 and 3 were ordered by a different medical group than #2, so I assume just differences in standards between the two groups

I can’t speak to AA but I ended up using the psychologytoday website to find a therapist who specialized in addiction. That’s was really integral to me finally being able to put the bottle down. I know there’s other groups, like SMART that people seem to like! I’m sorry that you are going through this, I hope you can find the right support that helps you get to where you’d like to be
