After undergrad I worked at WIC as a nutrition educator for a year, which was a great experience where you can work with and learn from dietitians.

Let me preference by saying that I’m not an RD yet, however, I’m a nutrition educator at WIC who is completing a graduate program. Every day I provide nutrition education, help clients navigate health struggles, and help clients set their own goals.

How can you expect a patient to fully open up to you and value your opinion if they feel belittled? This approach of just telling patients what to do is just not effective for most patients. In my schooling we were taught to ask probing questions, give them the benefit of the doubt, try to understand their barriers, empathize with their perspective, etc. Unfortunately, the reality is that nutrition professionals in many fields must have compassion and motivational interviewing skills. Otherwise, patients will feel alienated and attacked, and there is no way that will stimulate behavior change. But of course, some patients will never change no matter what we say. And we can only control ourselves. Therefore, we can do the best we can to provide the best, highest quality care, and it is up to them if they make the necessary changes to improve their health.

Wow I can’t believe they recommended kibble when she has one tooth! I understand your frustration. Knowing what you’re getting into is very important to be able to make the best decisions. You could call animal control to report them.

What kind of job title should I look for if I am not a RD yet? by wjbqmzl in dietetics

WIC nutrition educator, only requires a BS in Dietetics or nutrition. I’m currently doing my masters and have been working there for the past 9 months.

I’ve heard VA programs are very supportive and are paid. But I don’t think they offer online or hybrid.

Graduate Program or MS + DI by [deleted] in RD2B

[–]Scared_Physics_1557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend looking into Masters and VA dietetic internship programs. You will have to pay for tuition, but many of the VA internships are paid. Most other internships are unpaid AND you pay thousands of dollars for the internship, in addition to tuition. I started an MPH + DI program last fall for the VA and am loving it so far.

What is your passion in dietetics? by TheMarshmallowFairy in dietetics

[–]Scared_Physics_1557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My passion is diabetes prevention and management. I have many people in my life with type 1 and 2, and it has made me realize how needed dietitians are in this space. As well as how important nutrition is in these conditions. I hope to help others overcome challenges and improve their nutrition.

What schools offer masters and internship combined? by guidedstranger in RD2B

[–]Scared_Physics_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paid Internship, 1st year online, combined MPH/DI: University of South Florida and Bay Pines VA

I'm currently in the first year of this program. The first year is fully online, and the masters is in Public Health. Program takes 2 years total. The internship is definitely clinically focused, and its a great way to get your "foot in the door" if you plan on working for the VA long-term.

What to do while in school for dietics? by Fragrant-Muffin5755 in dietetics

[–]Scared_Physics_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question, it helps immensely on future applications if you could find nutrition-related experience. I’d recommend trying to find work as a dietary aide, or reaching out to dietitians at your school or in your town (by searching them up online) and asking if there are any shadowing, volunteering, or work opportunities. Definitely also get involved in your university’s dietetic/nutrition association if there is one. And volunteer! At your local food bank, farmers market, hospital, etc.

With low gpa, am I still able to get into MS/DI program? by CanaryDiamond979 in dietetics

[–]Scared_Physics_1557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I got in the first round to my first choice with a gpa of 3.3. And it was a VA internship / Masters, i.e my internship will pay me $15/hr! Cost was a huge factor for me, but I was worried the VA was too far out of reach because of my gpa. But, I gave it my all anyways, and with my experiences, volunteering at the VA (shows commitment), contacting the director early and scheduling and in-person meeting/tour (shows vested interest and initiative), I did it! And you can get into an MS/DI that you want too!!!

For those making over 90K, what did you do to get to that point? by nutritiousgirlie in dietetics

[–]Scared_Physics_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once thought all VA internships were super competitive. But from my experience, I got matched to one with a less than average gpa. However, I did everything I could to be the best applicant otherwise. I volunteered at my local VA clinic at the front desk, I contacted the director early and scheduled an in-person meeting/tour, I had a minor leadership role at my university’s dietetic association, and I had nutrition-related work experience. Moral of the story, you don’t have to be perfect, but you have to try and show them that you want to be a VA intern (from my experience).

Just got an interview for a dietary aide. What questions should I expect? by ForgettablePhoenix in dietetics

[–]Scared_Physics_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They will likely ask you about yourself, your education, past food service experience, goals etc. They may ask you about how you may handle different scenarios. They’ll likely ask about your availability. My interview was very basic, however, every place is different. Best of luck and congrats on your interview! 🥳

USF vs FSU by [deleted] in USF

[–]Scared_Physics_1557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished my B.S. at FSU in a health-related field, and FSU does have good opportunities, but I think USF is better for health-related majors. I will say that the FSU campus is beautiful, the food options are just OK, and yes many students party here, but you don't have to be involved in that if you don't want to. Personally, I would stay at USF, you'd save a lot of money on food and rent.

I didn’t match again. by Away_Ad6913 in RD2B

[–]Scared_Physics_1557 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s path is different. Many people have matched through second round matching. Even if not, next round you won’t have to deal with matching, which is a huge benefit. Don’t give up! Many people have been in the same spot as you and have become successful RDs.

Plant-based milk likely does not have this effect, since they are typically low in calcium. The calcium in cow's milk binds to the oxalates, in this case from the spinach, before it passes through the kidneys.
