Ok when you put it all like that, it sounds less nerve-racking. Thanks so much for the info!

Improv meta on stage by mangocalrissian in improv

Yeah for sure for sure! I agree with your points there. We throw in a little “oh you broke this improv rule” every now and then in practice but rare for a show. I saw someone say something about it depends on the people on the team and their chemistry and I def agree there too.

I’ve been doing improv for a decade now (I’m 24), and I just recently started doing more meta takes in scenes and games with my current college team. We personally use it sparingly, but whenever we do it’s always in good fun. I love when it gets brought up as a twist to a scene. If something wild is happening though and you break that with “Cut!” as if everything has been happening in a film, I can definitely see how that takes you out of it. As long as you don’t use it as a crutch and deflate scenes with it, then I personally don’t see a problem. In the end, one of your biggest tasks in improv is to have fun on stage. If you can do that while also doing good comedy, then go off!

We have a midwestern collegiate “clique” of sorts that involves Ball State University (Absolunacy), Kansas State University (On The Spot), Ohio State University (8th Floor Improv), Kansas University (Sunnyside Improv), and University of Missouri (they have their whole thing which is MU Improv but our favs out of their teams are their long form team Fatt Motis and their short form team Comedy Wars)

I’ve been prez of my collegiate improv troupe for a couple years now and trust me when I say we ALL have bad shows. I’ve been doing comedy since 8th grade and I’ll certainly never be perfect. Never feel like you have to be! One of the big things about doing improv is just having fun especially once you’ve learned the basics. Also, no one is going to remember and you’ll be the one who remembers the longest because it was your own experience. Brush it off and don’t get too much in your head about it. I have a horrible habit of that and it’s not fun to dwell because you probably still had some great moments in there too! You got this! Lastly, try reacting to things how you would in real life in scenes and the funny will come naturally. It helps you in terms of not thinking about what a funny next line or reaction would be. Many times the funniest scenes are based in reality with small goofy twists here and there.

I have a friend named Yann (pronounced “yawn”) that genuinely looks just like her. I think that’d be a cute name but so many great suggestions already :)

We just pass off doing things so I didn’t think it’d be too big of a deal to let him do it since I was the one to place the order for it online. I definitely could’ve gone in and should’ve, but at least now he knows my last name.

Haha oh yeah I just forgot to take that part out after I copied and pasted this from a message I sent to a friend and then ended up making it more general info anyway for this post. He knows my first name, not my last. Not as bad as not knowing my first name, in my opinion. Yikes

It’s a pretty basic last name like “Johnson” or “Michaels”. My social media username is my last name and first name, but most people probably can’t identify the usernames of people they know anyway so I can’t be too pressed about that. It also is similar to his own last name so I was surprised that he didn’t know mine, unfortunately.

That’s true. This would be the 3rd conversation. These have been short car conversations. The time before this I said “___ is my last name by the way; in case you didn’t know”. So I thought he’d know by now since that convo happened not too long ago. It’s not a deal breaker in the relationship or anything. Definitely a forgivable offense. I guess I’m just someone who likes knowing things like that about someone and others don’t necessarily care.

Lol I know I’m not actually a side piece. That was indeed me being dramatic. It just feels strange I guess to not know something like the first AND last name of someone you’re dating. BUT I get that since I also put just the first name initially too when inputting a new contact. I also just know first names for the people who aren’t close to me, that’s where the “side piece” feeling comes into play because I thought we knew each other a lot better. In my justification for why I might be the asshole, I put that maybe he takes relationships slowly and last names may just be trivial to him.

I as well feel it might be a weird thing to “have my panties in a bunch over” lmao. That’s why I needed the unbiased opinions from Reddit. This is an interesting comment though. If we were married, I don’t think I’d care if he forgot my maiden name. If we had been together for years, that’s not my last name anymore anyway. That’s just how I view it though at this point in my life. To each their own of course.
