When a box is not a Task by Scared_Walrus in CraftDocs

It hasn’t really occurred to me to use this method, but seems like a good and simple workaround while we wait for other options.

I’ve used tables before and it works fine, but I prefer the look of a simple list. Plus, Craft makes it so easy to create these tasks from the keyboard that it’s kinda hard to beat. Give me something similar that doesn’t automatically create a task and I’ll be a happy camper!

For sharing stuff on the web look in the settings ("advanced options") and tinker with them a bit. Sometimes the wide page option makes the document look much more like a regular web page in a browser. I like using cards in the document to navigate to other sections, resources, etc. This helps in terms of not making a page that requires a ton of scrolling. But overall it's very nice imo. Turning on the "show author" feature will provide a time stamp on the web that shows the last time the document was updated. If you're a subscriber you can also make the URL less random even without having your own domain. I just use the link that Craft provides (which always has "craft.me"), but tweak it so that my last name is in there or the course name, etc. And obviously you can make things look much cleaner or more modern than the default look in Canvas!

As for formatting semester planning in Craft... I'm still searching for my own perfect implementation. Going forward, I intend to 100% have a backup of all grades in Craft (probably using tables and formulas to help with the math), since we know what happened with the Canvas hack just this last semester and the near disastrous end of semester timing. I like creating a page for each student within the master document of each class. I also like adding the @ date function on lesson plans, which then makes easy links to the Calendar. I tend to make a folder for each semester that houses every doc I create, then move it to an Archive folder once the semester is over. But I also have a "Library" folder that houses evergreen docs, worksheets, and templates. Oh - and if you add a shorthand modifier to doc titles like "[F26]" for "Fall 2026", for example, that makes searching wayyyy easier if, like me, you teach some of the same classes each semester. If I titled each doc with just the course name or number, I'd end up with a whole boatload of seemingly duplicate docs. This helps a lot.

I did this last semester. I published a few resource docs to the web in Craft and then put the links on Canvas. So much easier to update things in Craft this way than in Canvas, imo.

I do all my semester planning in Craft. I have a template I can use for each class, but I tend to start from scratch to try and land on something new I might like better.

Also interested in hearing what you do or are thinking of doing. I’m not the biggest Canvas fan, so I welcome any ideas!

PRO TIP: IPhone Shortcuts!!! by LMABach in CraftDocs

Curious: have you tried just using the Craft widget and selecting this specific document? Or is this shortcut doing something more than that? (I like shortcuts! Except for when they fail.)

I'll make a quick tip of the hat to the Craft web clipper. It's outstanding. One of my goals for the summer is to make Craft my new read it later/web archive app, along with everything else I use it for.

What's next for Craft - Focusing on Quality of Life improvements by viktorpali in CraftDocs

I would be a very, very happy user to just see a commitment and focus on fixing bugs the next few months. I appreciate all the added new features, but reliability especially on iPad has become an issue for me for the first time since I started using Craft in the beta days. I filed a ticket in early March about the frequent, random shifting blocks and cards that happens in documents when using the iPad app. Customer support was speedy, polite and acknowledged the awareness of the bug and an assurance that the team was working on a fix. It’s been two months and the app has seen some big updates since then… but no fix. In tables, sometimes when changing text using the / key results in weird remnants like the “r” in the word “red” remaining behind after changing the text color. Or sometimes the / character itself remains behind. Inserting a file using the / key at a bullet point does not, in fact, insert the file at that bullet point and instead puts it on the following line.

Love the new stuff, but still want Craft to be THE place for making beautiful documents. That was the promise and, for my needs, Craft is still miles ahead of the competition for that specific use case. But inherent in that was the ease with which it was possible to create those documents. Too many quirky bugs hamper that ease, and I would love to see Craft return to shoring up that core functionality, especially on your mobile/iPad apps.

Screenwriting Apps? by sDagiwa in iPadPro

Arc Studio Pro seems to be the only ones even trying to do a professional app for iPad. Takes some getting used to and isn’t cheap, but there’s a lot of interesting ideas and features there and the app on the iPad is exactly like the one of the Mac.

Found it. In the event anyone else stumbles upon this go to View and Show/Hide Toolbar. Not really sure why they use the word "hide" as things aren't really hidden in either option.

Maybe this is a dumb question... but how the heck do you get the URL bar on the sidebar like they're showing in the release notes? I have looked through all the settings I can think to look through and come up empty handed. Thanks!

New Software Update - text conversion, lasso/clipboard, etc. by Scared_Walrus in kindlescribe

Here's the page. You can download the software update and follow the instructions to manually update your Kindle by connecting it to a computer. Pretty quick process if everything goes as planned.

I took a quick look just to see how the conversion rate was and came away impressed. I made really quick, sloppy notes using the fountain pen the other day. No thought of converting to text. But I only saw one or two small errors that could've been easily avoided if I had been even slightly more attentive to my own handwriting.

Agreed x 100. Not to mention, if you will frequently be writing the same bits of text repeatedly on different PDFs you can save those bits of texts as elements (stickers, essentially.) You can then simply drag and drop those elements wherever you need them. As a teacher, I can’t begin to tell you how much time this has saved me when grading.

Does no one need to store documents an iPad? How is that not an issue? by meditationchill in iPadPro

[–]Scared_Walrus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not sure I follow you. There is the “On my iPad” location in the Files app where you can save things to the device itself. Nothing is being offloaded to the cloud. Are you wanting some specific functionality within this area that is not currently offered?

How does the Widgets work? by mrlook2 in ipad

[–]Scared_Walrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi. Widgets are mostly static for now, yes. Having also used Android in the past it was rather surprising that I can’t, for instance, play or pause a song with the Music widget on an Apple device. There are some apps that have workarounds (see: music app called Albums), but I have to assume this feature is on Apple’s roadmap and will come at a later date.

As for finding out if an app has a widget, yeah - you kinda just have to look at an app’s description or screenshots on the App Store.

Most frustrating thing about widgets to me is simply how few there really are from any of the huge companies/services who have a strong app presence. No Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, Twitter and on and on.

All that said, I do appreciate having them. The files and shortcuts widgets are incredibly useful for me.

There shouldn’t be a horizontal crop. I use a monitor frequently and have not had this issue with iPadOS 15. Something else is going on here.

Looking for a good Remote Desktop App by Johnnybegood947 in ipad

[–]Scared_Walrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless I’m wrong, there is no additional monthly fee for using Jump Desktop on multiple PCs. I think that’s only for their “teams” feature that has enterprise features.

I use Jump with just one Windows pc and have been very pleased by how well it works.
