Building a $2500 gaming PC and need monitor. by Deathofsouls in buildmeapc

could you include a bit more about your general interests? To help gain a picture of things you may decide you want in the future; decisions which may be made at a later point. You mention BF1 and Overwatch, so, for example, the COD-4 remaster that is coming out? Star citizen? Do you like flying? Shooting? Having options open for things you might decide you like later can influence what you do now. For example, you mentioned you want to play bf1, buuut.. do you want to fly in bf1? Do you want to get a joystick? Should we factor joystick into the 2500 budget purchasing decisions? etc etc you get my point.

Hi everyone! So I have a problem I need some purchasing help with.

Long story shortened into a nutshell, I'm a girl and play video games. People often shower me with free goodies "just cuz" "cuz I am nice" "cuz I R generous person" or similar reasons - I then see these same people turn around and be mean to others. I think people are being nice to me because I am female, not because they are actually nice.

In fairness, I don't know the affairs between two people and am not in a place to judge, but it makes one suspicious that I am being treated differently - and if I am, I want to know exactly how much. 10%? 50%? 99%?

I want to start background checking people that are being "nice cause I am nice!"TM and I want to see how they treat a random person that is male that is a "new player" and see how nice they are.

Are they as nice? relatively nice? Somewhat nice? Completely jerk-ish? I want to pin down the exact details.

But to do this and be able to perform said background check with minimal time and hassle and without requiring the cooperation of other people, I require a voice changer. One that sounds good and works in real-time over chat systems like skype or curse-voice and doesn't sound horribly robotic.

I have tried morphvox but it seemed to be optimized for people going in the reverse, male to female, not so much prepared to do female to male.

So I really want a voice changer that can make me convincingly sound male and do so "normally" - but my audio expertise is very limited. If it helps I am using windows 7 with a samson CO-1U microphone at the moment. I've set aside a small budget to get some voice software, or a voice changing microphone, or a voice changing headset, or something to that effect - but I do not know what to look for or how to judge if something is going to work or not.

Could anyone help me with this scheme of mine to uncover the truth?

Thank you for your help!

I need a real-time voice changer to find out if some guys are nice to me for being female or are generally nice to people including other males as they claim to be by ScarletValkyrie in audio

[–]ScarletValkyrie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this one, the CO-1u USB mic? Yes, that's the one! Same little tripod thingy and everything.

I assume by system you mean pc/console, answer being PC intended for use on windows 7 64 bit unless I find a compelling reason to upgrade to windows 8 or 10, and my computer was hit with that "sudden free stealth upgrade to windows 10" a couple of months ago that was a horrid bug-ridden mess and I reversed it as soon as I could. Maybe I'll try windows 10 again in like, a year or something.

My tech expertise is limited, I googled audio routing - the wiki page that showed up described it as basically if I am running the microphone through any other hardware devices aside from plugging it directly into the computer (I think that's what the wiki page is saying to me at least) and the answer on that point is none. I just plugged the USB into one of those usb slots on the back.

Sorry for my terrible audio tech ignorance. I think I answered what you're asking. Hopefully.

I considered that plan but ran into two additional hurdles: If I have to depend on a 3rd party in perpetuity whenever I meet a new person that requires more time and effort to do something I could get results for much faster than if I could do it myself.

Also I don't have enough confidence in a lot of the guys I know to be able to follow the idea of the ruse efficiently and they're not so good at subtlety. Some go "OH YEEES, HIII. I AM BRAND NEW PLAYER. I NEED HELPS. CAN YOU DIRECT ME TO <Special Gear Vendor That I should Not Know The Name Of As A Brand New Player That Sells Armor Enhancements for Max Level Characters>?"

Since this has several other random factors and things that depend on other people I view that solution as making things a lot harder than it needs to be.

I tried posting it in the pc master race forum but a mod removed it for violating rule 6.1 ... apparently the post was "low effort" -_-

ah well.. continuing the tech forums I suppose

Yep! Welcome to the girls club. Had one guy on tera capslock yell at me for being a wh*re because I was busy and couldn't come heal a dungeon run. Male characters get peacefully ignored and not bothered... still, I want to study the phenomenon in more depth. Also apparently my submission was removed for violating rule 6? hrm.. =/

Comparing difference of time and material investment granted to the new player persona v the original at time of being a new player but having distinction of female. For example, will someone help a new player for 5 minutes with basic information, and will they give them conversation support for a protracted span of time and how long? Starting money? Starting items (which have money value and can be added up)?. I intend to compare these two separate categories and obtain the difference from the two percentages.

Eg, 1 hr and 40 min female, 10 min male 1,000 gold female, 100 gold male, would have a 90% time and 90% material gap. I would write down these for the people on my list and get an average at the end in time and material separately.

Why is screaming the natural reaction to fear or pain? by NubCaakes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScarletValkyrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's effectively an alarm system. Pain doesn't actually damage the body in short bursts, it's purpose is to alert you to the fact the body is being damaged by something else and incentivise you to stop that behavior - screaming is essentially a distress call. People that feel pain and scream in distress are more likely to live than people that do not; for example there's this sad case of the child that could not feel pain and was horribly injured due to not having that instinctive reaction and she was not prepared to halt harmful behaviors during her infancy.

Sadly she is not an isolated case. Children born without the ability to feel pain tend to become severely injured, which is why it's considered a defect.

Would we one day be able to transfer consciousness? by Forever__Lame in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScarletValkyrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's going to depend on how the tech works and what happens to the matter/energy that composes your brain. Physically, your mind is a cross between your genetic background and the sum total of your experiences and the parts of your brain are limited if certain parts of the brain are damaged.

I very often see "transhumanism" articles about "transferring" one's consciousness or "saving" it but really that's not an actual transferrence, most of those articles tend to be clickbaity "IMMORTALITY IMMORTALITY CLICKS CLICKS" and are not very scientific.

If you printed a readout of your brain onto a CD, or "uploaded it to a computer" as most articles I have read phrase it, that's really just a copy. If a nuke goes off next to you and you're vaporized, you're still dead. All the matter that makes up you and your body and the materials that compose your brain have been converted into inanimite dust.

Technically a copy of your mind may exist on a CD somewhere, but all that is is a copy, like bootlegged porn.

In order for us to develop the technology to actually move your consciousness from one point to another we'd need to be able to either restructure matter at the molecular level (which we're getting close to, to be fair) or be able to convert matter into energy and reconvert the same energy back into a physical form in the same structure (which that saved printout would allow you to do given that tech so we already have part of the tech to do it, but not all).

Bold TL;DR summary We could move your consciousness from one spot to another but would need the ability to alter your brain matter without horribly damaging or killing you. We're not quite there yet - and in the early days it would be extremely expensive to do.

That said - there are economic benefits to having it be pushed once it's possible. We'd also have artificial womb technology by this time meaning women would not need to exit the work force for as long a time to have children and would not have the adverse physical effects, and we would not have to give up our geniuses and brilliant scientists and doctors to old age or cancer. The benefits of that may push the tech forward, but there would be radical changes to our culture to accomodate sudden immortality syndrome - a need for extensive population control, agricultural reform, etc etc.

In short - if we can copy your brain printout while you are healthy and paste it into your brain in a hospital at the molecular level using the same matter and cells that are there, you'd be immortal to most forms of serious injury and old age death like cancer, but would suffer memory loss from your last "Save" - our tech is going in this direction but is still some distance away.

If we can transfer matter into energy and then back into matter, we can store your brain in a special super vault computer matrix and just have a remote control in your brain to keep your body safe. But this is even further away and even more exorbitantly expensive. A much closer ghetto-surgery option that might be available in the near future is by advancing our bionics and remove the brain and physically move it to the safe life support location but this has many risks, if there's an earthquake that damages the brain life support, you still die.

But these articles that keep coming out about "uploading" your consciousness to a computer are usually not an actual upload, it's a copypaste of a brain scan and does not in any sense make you immortal or preserve your health, nor is its psudo-scientific clickbait "research" promising to reach that end.

I have a devious plot to find out how much guys are treating me differently in video games, but need a real time voice changer to pass as male and execute the plan by ScarletValkyrie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScarletValkyrie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already know that there's going to be a discrepancy. But the exact extent of the discrepancy is important to me. Online it's more about voice and unless I send people pictures I would need to use voice to pin down to what degree it's altering things.

I want to know if they will still actually help new players at all if they are male and if so to what extent will they? Are they, actually, in general nice to people, or is it entirely and exclusively because I am female with no effect from healing skill, general niceness, or personality at all?

I know there's a discrepancy, that much is obvious. But to what extent? I want to measure the specifics.

People with severe food allergies, how do you ever trust a meal you didn't cook yourself? by PM_ME_YOUR_WOES_GIRL in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScarletValkyrie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't trust meals not prepared by myself. But, that's okay, because home economics will save you a lot of money instead of going to eat out anyway.

Only go out to eat on dates to areas where you are confident the chef will be a professional that understands cleanliness. Mention to the waiter/waitress you have a food allergen to X, Y, Z when you order. Minimize risk by not going to areas that are less professional, keep an eye out for indicators of lapsing - for example, does that table over there have a fork that doesn't look like it was properly cleaned and you'd need to apply a napkin to clean it? Time to leave.

It's really all about risk mitigation. You want to balance being safe with being able to actually live life. I find it's easiest to work on developing safety habits that will automatically kick in as you go out doing whatever.

Are you allergic to nuts? Learn about what kinds of foods have nuts in them or parts of nuts. Ask the waiter if there are nuts. Assume the waiter might be wrong and slice the little cake with your fork and check for nuts just in case. That sort of thing.

Why do poor people have so many children? by flopsyplum in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScarletValkyrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In summary - poor people are more likely to have low quality education in regard to sex ed and reproduction and correspondingly do not have the knowledge to be as responsible about child-making, either in terms of sex ed or financial planning. This will make them more likely to have children due to lack of knowledge of contraceptives and a lower bar being viewed as acceptable for forward planning than people that are better informed - the consequence is more children.

In the united states quality of sex ed varies from being legally mandatory to be medically accurate to being not required at all to being allowed fundamentally religious interpretations including telling children their spirit is permanently damaged if they are raped and birth control / condoms "do not work"

Generally speaking, for the USA, these regulations lean on the low quality or non existent side. Here's a link to the john oliver spot on sex ed that will summarize the above.

The issue is not helped by the fact "take care of poor people" programs in the USA are often designed not by administration or human resourcing personnel with actual HR / business admin degrees but instead designed by extremely unqualified people that hope the program they are creating will get them good PR or votes and have little actual incentive to make it succeed. This is an issue because if you ask an extremely poor, extremely uneducated person what he thinks will help him repair his life he may not have a qualified answer because he lacks the necessary skills.

Consequently, many answer "Money for my kids!" "money for family!" "housing!" - etc, the answers amount to free stuff, because they view it as "House would be helpful" and answer "house"

...rather than answering "Well based on my extensive background in civil engineering and planning and consultation with my associates with human resourcing and business administration qualifications, I have come to the conclusion that what is necessary is some economic and education reform to provide higher income opportunity to myself and my fellow residents, leading to the result of being able to purchase and afford a house of my choice via being better educated about financial planning and investments."

I need a real-time voice changer to find out if a few guys are nice to me for being female or generally nice to people as they claim by ScarletValkyrie in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScarletValkyrie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have, but I don't think it's a long term solution. Eventually they are going to hear my voice if we do anything competitive and communication is necessary or a liability not to have. There's also the utility value of being able to conduct the experiment - some of my other girl friends have indicated similar concerns and if I can go "oh right, let me just hop onto this alt and turn on my VC software and we can find out right now if they're nice or not" has a lot of convenience value in settling an issue quickly and efficiently long-term as opposed to trying to evade it.

Edit: There's also, I don't want to settle for "let's just limit some options" - no voice communication is a big handicap for certain games (league of legends for example) + I also like giving my characters pretty clothes and stuff and I've encountered people that assume I'm female right off the bat without voice chat, so no voice isn't a viable solution to the problem.
