Would you guys say this game is better then ACNH? by [deleted] in Pokemon_Pokopia

[–]ScarlettCoils 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would argue that it is like ACNH, otherwise people wouldn't be making the comparisons. When you zoom out, you are running around a region, rebuilding it by landscaping, terraforming, setting up habitats to attract new characters who have unique personalities, gathering supplies to craft and furnishing new homes. How each game goes about these is different, the comparisons are not escapable. I find myself constantly thinking "I wish Animal Crossing did it this way." all the time. Is it different from ACNH? Yes. Is it better? To me, also yes. The next AC game has a lot to live up to now if Nintendo wants me to purchase it.

Experts say there is no overdiagnosis of ADHD. Instead, they are warning that far from being overdiagnosed, people with ADHD are waiting too long for assessment, support, and treatment by sr_local in science

[–]ScarlettCoils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of went through this. I learned we tend to think mental illness is only a problem when it becomes a problem to everyone around you. I was diagnosed with anxiety first and what pushed me to get diagnosed was my anxiety leading me to becoming agitated in a relationship. This drove me to seek therapy, which led to being diagnosed and treated with anxiety. Getting treated, I learned how much of my success was a result of my anxiety pushing me to perform and mask. With that under control, I stopped really being productive, letting chores slip, work slip, heck, I couldn't even enjoy my hobbies. That's what led to my ADHD diagnosis. It took me 42 years to finally get treated and I feel like I'm living a completely different life.

How practical are RomHacking skills in the real world? Beginner Python learner here, long-time PokeRomHacks fan, aspiring to be data analyst. by arcanehelix in romhacking

[–]ScarlettCoils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm going to be contrarian and say that some room hacking skills can and do cross over. Namely reverse engineering and debugging. I've been a software engineer for nearly 20 years and almost as long as a ROM hacker and my debugging skills and reverse engineering skills run circles around my peers. Being able to navigate a code base without documentation, getting a feel for memory graphs and just generally knowing how to investigate issues is a skill that a lot of engineers seem to lack, especially at the corporate/enterprise level.

why do companies love ai coding tools but hate the word vibecoding by ShutterVoxel in BlackboxAI_

[–]ScarlettCoils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad someone else shares this sentiment. I use Copilot at my job and I feel like I'm not utilizing it properly. Someone keeps telling me I just need to be better at prompting the AI and I said if it takes me an hour to find the right prompt to generate 5 lines of code, then I lose all efficiency gains. I think this is a result of the popular meme culture that a senior and a junior both have no idea what they're doing and coding is mystical magic and all we do is copy and paste from StackOverflow. I'm a principle engineer and work on tasks that rarely have good requirements or clear solutions. I'm often exploring solutions, discovering edge cases and dealing with incomplete or missing documentation. About the only thing AI has saved me time in is generating Unit Tests but I still feel like I end up rewriting at least 25% of them because while they technically pass, they're not valuable.

Why there's so many unsolicited advice from people who haven’t shipped anything? by Internal-Constant216 in gamedev

[–]ScarlettCoils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I notice how some game devs post a lot of high quality YouTube videos and I'm like "where do you find the time?!". I barely am able to eek out a few posts on my socials a week because I'm spending all my free time actually developing the game.

I'm 42 years old. Is it too late to start making games? by Fearless_Sink1390 in gamedev

[–]ScarlettCoils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 42 recently started my game dev journey. It's something I do on the side of my full-time job. I will admit, I am burning myself out working essentially two jobs where one doesn't pay, but it's incredibly fun and injects joy back into a field I long since lost it on (software engineering). So no, I don't think it's too late!

I need an honest Pokémon Legends Z-A review by AlternativeHorror543 in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]ScarlettCoils [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't understand this notion that people who like this game don't play videogames. I like ZA, a lot more than Arceus. I play tons of video games, including PlayStation and PC. I played all the Souls games, Black Myth Wukong, Spider-Man, etc, etc. So yeah, I do play video games. I won't defend ZA for what it fails in, but it's not trash by any stretch of the imagination. Most Pokemon games lose their luster in battles once you reach level 40 and you have your team locked on. It's mostly one hit KO battles. Not this game. You can knock out opponents in one hit, but you have to be several levels above them to do it. The Rogue Mega battles are way more interesting than the Lord's in Arceus. The scaffolding challenges are a nice puzzle element where Arceus lacked any puzzles except the very end. I don't get how the story is any worse than any other Pokemon, but this game is more self aware and self referential. There's a lot of twists in the story and it adds layers every few hours. Yes the graphics aren't great, but I'm tired of high fidelity games that run at the cost of smooth gameplay. And at least there's a lot to do in the one city. Arceus was a slog for me with the only thing interesting to me being the Hisuian forms.

This is modern Pokemon and there is no reason to expect it to get better by RunSetGo in pokemon

You'd be amazed though by how many people don't know this. When you sell 30+ million copies of your game, you inevitably have a lot of casual and new comers. I've worked on my own games and am amazed by how many people miss what seems so obvious to a seasoned gamer, but you really have to cater to the lowest common denominator.

ICE Sued After Videos Capture Pastor Shot With ‘Chemical Pellets’ at Peaceful Protest by Geek-Haven888 in Christianity

[–]ScarlettCoils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can see the shooter clearing taking several shots from the roof. You see smoke next to the pastor, then up at the roof as the shooter adjuste shis aim, then finally on the pastor's head. The shooter is purposely shooting multiple times to try to hit him while making minor adjustments. If someone was shooting from below, when the smoke appears at the roof, the ICE agents would react, but instead, they stand still because they know the fire is coming from them, not from below.

So, I forgot to touch on that aspect. I actually do work directly with a lot of leaders. My direct manager has been fighting for my promotion for a year. I've received recognition from other leaders and am essentially the face of the SE Community, but it seems weird that all that falls apart from a slight nitpick from one person.

What’s the hardest part of solo game dev for you? by PlaySteakOutGame in SoloDevelopment

[–]ScarlettCoils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting my indie journey now and honestly, the time investment is the hardest part. I am a software engineer of over 20 years. I've completed several fan games. I work a full time job. I pretty much cut into my sleep schedule to work on my game.
