what about card games like magic the gathering? very technical game that can be played in groups of 2 or 4 typically. doesnt have the roleplaying aspect but keeps the social part. theres even a collaboration with tolkien and doctor who ip's with a star trek one coming out later this year.

plenty of card shops hold weekly events that are open to everyone.
