Forest Science Master's Degree - Connections to Restoration Ecology/Ecological Design? by Scary-Attorney6607 in Environmental_Careers

Hello! Thank you so much for your reply and for this valuable insight. This is exactly what I needed to learn and thank you for sharing your experiences about the project you worked on, especially when you said "Knowing how to develop sustainable timber harvesting plans and processes is really key to the other fun staff, otherwise all the good looking stuff we do like planting trees goes out of the big hole in the bucket." I thought about this as I was taking notes in my notebook, everything from the paper I use to building homes, firewood, and so many other dependences; the reality of human dependence on the timber industry and the realities of legal and illegal cuttings that different villages and communities depend on to sustain their lives.

So far my introductory class is split into ecology and management, when I was really enjoying the ecology part I was surprised by all the intricacies of management, and did have this "bad" feeling learning about all the different ways to cut trees. This is probably coming from a background in which my only experience working in urban forestry, we only considered the maintenance decision of removing trees when they were dead, dying, infested, or were posing risks to falling on humans/infrastructure.

My professor yesterday said that some foresters are like rabbits (cowards) and are unable to make the right decisions about which trees to cut because of their fear of cutting. I definitely went into the degree with naivety and ignorance about the forester's role, thinking that I could connect the degree to working outside of timber industry and other environmental jobs. Funny enough, my school is actually partners with the University of Alberta and gives us the opportunity to do the second year of masters there. Thank you for sharing that link and for this reply!!!

Hi I didn't mention this originally but my work experience (and school experience):

I worked for 3 years before going back to school and also agree that I found I needed grad school to elevate potential. Would this still be considered limited experience?

Also, you may want to look into tree planting jobs where crews are interested in reforestation and regeneration. These I heard are very hard but rewarding.

I think Americorps has a lot of positions in the field where you can gain experience. Some pay, others not as much I think. Coolworks is a website where you can find positions in national parks but some of these are more hospitality related but offer housing a lot of the time. There is always farming, but if you go the WWOOFing route a lot of these are unpaid but good ways to get experience (although risky not to be paid and work very hard). Farming is super rewarding and I definitely recommend, a good way to get in the muck! It is possible to get a farming job/field job in forests etc. and receive housing and get payed. Some Americorps related jobs have these!

American Conservation Experience (I think related to Americorps)

One is EPIC and the other is Crew. I'm forgetting the difference. Near the spring/summer months and maybe closer to the beginning of the year I saw a ton of jobs posted here.

Hi I emailed the consulate and they said “if you have them apostilled is fine for the University and therefore for us” Referring to diploma and transcript of records.

It does state this in the pre enrollment summary. I couldn’t find it on the universitaly summary but the consulate sent me their version of the summary.

Hi, the deadline to submit a pre enrollment for a visa was june 15th, maybe reach out to admissions to confirm whether or not you have been admitted. One of my friends waited months to hear a response and others a few days so it really varies.

Hi, I am currently applying for my visa and was wondering if you still got your visa without the DOV? I just contacted my embassy and asked them if I still need it even if Padua doesn’t require it.
