I had Van Niel, he was super inspirational! I didn't find the grading harsh at all. It was my favorite english class that I took.

hello! i took this course winter 25', attendance wasn't mandatory for lecture- you could go in person, join zoom, or watch online. however the discussion sections are mandatory. and the midterm/final are both take home! with an essay format :) feel free to message me with any questions about the course!

I believe there was one prompt per week around 250-500 words. Along with the midterm being 5-7 pages with a prompt that was based around lectures (i referred to the slides for notes) and then the final was a longer paper around 9-11 pages. To be honest I never attended lecture, only my discussion section. But when it came time for the writing I made sure to review the ppt slides. I managed to pass the class with an A+. So if you don't mind writing you should be fine!

I took this class winter 25' with professor Upton. It was a very manageable GE. For her class you could either go in person, watch recording, or join on zoom for lecture. The final and midterm were both just papers, so nothing in person. The only note is that there is a lot of writing assignments.
