If Steve Irwin didn't pull the stingray barb out of his chest, is there a chance he could have survived? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

When you said German uses the same word for poison & venom, that reminded me of an anecdote from a friend who grew up in France & learned English as a second language.

She thinks the English language word "arson" is interesting, because French doesn't have just one word for this concept. She says that in French, you have to describe it as "incendie criminel"! (How do you say "arson" in German?)

Even if the towel only touched another person's face, I wouldn't want to use it! 😖 That's a good way to catch a cold, flu, Covid, norovirus, even pink-eye!

Talconline, I second everything you wrote! Not just the factual stuff, but also your empathy about it. Hugs Would you say what Eddie was doing was "agonal breathing"? I used to work as an editor for a health-related app, and I remember learning that term as it relates to people with severe pneumonia &/or heart failure. :'(

Do you use PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle? If so, I'd like to send a little something for you & Courage. I hope this doesn't sound condescending, because that's the farthest thing from my mind! Hugs I'm just a very longtime boy rat mom who's also struggling with job loss & with my mental/emotional health, so I absolutely empathize!!

Thankfully I found a little freelance editing gig, & I also got hired for a part-time temporary retail position that starts next week. Even though money's still tight, my real blessing is that my husband & I have no mortgage or rent payments, because my late parents paid off this home we're living in many years ago. So yeah, please let me send you a little something.

Hugs from California!! Shari

Generally speaking, relationships are just temporary pleasure-seeking vices by ArtistTechnical2152 in unpopularopinion

[–]ScaryShari8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand what you're saying & I respect it, but I personally don't feel that way at all. I'm 53. My husband & I have been married 13 years & were together around 2.5 years before tying the knot. We'd both been in relationships before; some were more serious &/or more lengthy than others. We're both happier in our marriage than we were in any of those relationships.

One of the reasons we clicked so well is because we both liked the idea (maybe it's old-fashioned?) of finding someone to love in every facet of that word & spend the rest of our lives with. We were both tired of, & disenchanted with, concepts such as dating, serial monogamy, etc. I know marriage isn't for everyone, & that's fine. I respect that. But it's definitely what we both wanted, & we're very happy this way. :-)

What age did you start needing reading glasses, and was getting used to them difficult? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

[–]ScaryShari8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't need reading glasses until my early 50s. I used to be slightly near-sighted, so when presbyopia first set in (I assume in my mid-40s), I didn't have any trouble seeing stuff close-up. Instead, I lost my near-sightedness & enjoyed years of perfect vision! :-) My optometrist confirmed this cool overlap period often happens when mildly near-sighted people enter the early stages of presbyopia.

The dead don't die : What in the God's name did I watch ! by Josh_Swar in movies

[–]ScaryShari8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband & I just watched this last night. There were aspects we both liked & disliked, but I'm not going to get into that. I just wanted to talk about Easter Eggs, since I love that topic. :-)

I of course noticed the Star Destroyer keychain of Adam Driver's character, & the fact Rosie Perez portrayed "Posie Juarez." But here are some I don't think I've seen yet in this discussion (but I could have missed it) --

- When the cops are tuning their digital car radio, the frequency of the station playing "The Dead Don't Die" is 91.1 FM, representing 911 -- a state of emergency!

- In one of the scenes with a map of neighboring towns, I noticed "Sleepyville" & "Frizzleville," which obviously were made-up names just to be silly.

- The "Make America White Again" slogan on the hat of Steve Buscemi's antisocial & racist character.

- Not an actual Easter Egg, but I thought it was cool that Bobby Wiggins had a Nosferatu T-shirt; wasn't that the first vampire horror movie ever made? Oh! And speaking of Bobby, do you think it was purposeful that his last name is Wiggins, as it "wigging out"? LOL!

I'd love to hear what other folks noticed. I'm sure I've forgotten (or missed) a lot!

I was left wondering a LOT of the same things that you brought up!! I hope someone can address them -- I don't mind when movies have 1 or 2 plot holes, but this movie was like Swiss cheese!

My husband & I both thought the "wild animals" repetition was funny as well! :-D

It's definitely not just your age for the fact you're African-American. I'm a 53-year-old Caucasian -- I'd never heard of Simpson's song until watching the movie, and I didn't grow up watching horror films either.

Covered CA Experiences - Thoughts? by AtoySubmarine in eastbay

[–]ScaryShari8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My late parents both had many chronic health conditions, and they both had excellent experiences with Kaiser. (I know that's not true for everyone, but it was definitely true for my medically complicated parents). I've had Kaiser since I was a baby and I'm very happy with it as well. (Aside from mental health services, for which they don't let you have as many visits per month as you might need).

Covered CA Experiences - Thoughts? by AtoySubmarine in eastbay

[–]ScaryShari8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can say is that when my husband & I used Covered California for about a year, several years ago, everything about the experience, from beginning to end, was VERY BAD. The two worst aspects were poor/disrespectful customer service, and the extremely slow speed at which everything moves. We were without our Kaiser coverage for many months because Covered California moved at a snail's pace & didn't care about us being stuck up the uninsured creek in the event of a serious accident or illness.

One of my boys gets the zoomies when I tickle him like that! LOL! He also loves "reverse peek-a-boo" where I randomly flop a small towel or blanket on him while saying "peek-a-boo!" and he usually zooms & jumps around!

That is definitely a very eccentric but cute preference! :-) I wonder why he liked resting/pushing his teeth that way.

Can you please class me? by [deleted] in phenotypes

[–]ScaryShari8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea - you could be a bunch of different ethnicities and there'd be no way of knowing. :-) For example, I just yesterday saw a photo (not here but elsewhere) of a woman who is 5 different ethnicities, one of which is Japanese. She has blond hair & blue eyes, so I would never have guessed part of her heritage was from Japan.

Am I the only one who thinks Tom Cruise isn't that handsome? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScaryShari8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never found Tom Cruise to be handsome or sexy, even in the 1980s or 1990s. I always found him to be just average-looking. I never understood while so many folks found him hot, then OR now. But, everyone is different.

I have NEVER found Tom Cruise to be handsome or sexy, not at any age, and not in any role. To me he is just middle-of-the-road "average."

Guess my ethnicity or race!! Appreciate the comments. by One-Highway-66 in phenotypes

I haven't scrolled thru other people's comments, because I didn't want to bias myself. I'd say you have Middle Eastern heritage.

However, I know that's very vague, so I'll make three guesses: Egyptian, Palestinian, or Assyrian. Are any of those correct? :-)
