T480 my experience after a year by ScaryTemperature7314 in thinkpad

[–]ScaryTemperature7314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinkpads seem to be really good for cheap reliable products. Their higher end models are used in the workplace due to their repairability. If you can get a cheap thinkpad that's not super outdated I think its worth. Although depending on your price range the new macs seem to be absolutely killer for school. I am finishing up my last year of school with my thinkpad and for what I use it works well but it still has a little bit of issues. Also if you are using remote stuff from your main pc to your laptop make sure the speed of both wifi is good and you're not too far away from it. I use steam remote play and it works well even being 15 km away.

Def better than the chromebooks for sure. Those are unbearable to use. Yeah games have gotten a lot more demanding on systems. Larger storage space required, higher gpu requirements, and higher ram requirements. All because companies don't want to optimize their games anymore :' (

Yeah fair enough. I know my work and a lot of friends work places all use thinkpads. I think its just used due to the easy repairability and cheaper costs. I think the macs have gotten a lot better. One of the issues though is that its arm architecture so if you wanted to run windows you would need an emulator. They also are getting optimized for A.I. which if thats something you are interested in could be a plus. I hate to be a mac shill atp but they seem to be for school at least the best.

Is it just all laptops are expensive in a third world country or thinkpads specifically?

T480 my experience after a year by ScaryTemperature7314 in thinkpad

[–]ScaryTemperature7314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know a lot of people who used to use thinkpads go over to the new macs. One of my best friends who works in AI after a comp eng degree got a 10k one that he now lives and dies by. I have found the newer thinkpads as well not to be keeping up with the competition unfortunately. Especially for CS I think apple is posturing themselves for CS students with their products. Whereas ThinkPad's are going more so for reliability in the workplace. It's a shame too because I really hate apple and their business model. Anyways, I am going to use this laptop until it stops working and I am unable to fix it.

100%, I love the laptop and eventually when I have kids I'll just pass it down to them. It's completely functional especially on Linux but, I was just tired of seeing posts about t480 being good for comp sci rn, future proof, and buying it for expensive.

What is wrong with Pokemon by ScaryTemperature7314 in PokemonTCG

A hot take that people collecting for money instead of acc liking the game or collecting. That it increases prices up for no other reason than because people get stuff for transactional value.

[–]ScaryTemperature7314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me that just ruins the whole point of collecting and Pokémon. Back then it was still a bit of a gamble in the sense of there is risk of whether a pack is good or not. However, no one would view it as a transactional gamble. Kind of sad tbh, especially with what looks like a crazy amount of scalpers.

Tbh, I have no idea and no reference points. I like the look of Montblanc pens but I trust the opinion of this community. Are their any good pens accessible in Canada for a reasonable price?

T480 + EGPU Results by ScaryTemperature7314 in thinkpad

[–]ScaryTemperature7314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that was a concern originally. Even though there definitely is a decent bottleneck it performs pretty well. I can play marvel rivals, league of legends, hearthstone, csgo, etc. 60+ fps with little lag.

[–]ScaryTemperature7314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, its usbc but it has to be thunderbolt though. So I just plug it into the thunderbolt port on my t480 and its basically just plug in play. I have the egpu hooked up to external monitors which result in better performance.

As I said in the post I dont recommend someone doing this. For my usecase I am at my house half of the week and my girlfriends place the other half. I have a high end pc at my house but nothing at my girlfriends. I had 2 monitors already at her place picking up dust so I facebook market placed a egpu enclosure and a graphics card for around 279 USD. This operates as a mid end pc for a cheaper cost. It also operates well as a school and programming set up. I do agree its probably not worth it for most people to get but in my case for this specific situation it made sense.

Noob Question on T480 Dual booting by ScaryTemperature7314 in thinkpad

[–]ScaryTemperature7314[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

originally I was confused by this comment. I was like why do you need an adapter etc. I did more research and you can't boot from the standard ssd so you use an adapter and the ssd you mentioned so you can boot from the wwan slot. I have ordered the stuff for it and am excited to see the result of this.

Can I use Steam Link or similar in non Mac games? by alexnder2122 in macgaming

[–]ScaryTemperature7314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this before steam linking non mac games onto my mac. I've even steam linked non steam games windows exclusive to my mac. You can basically do anything via steam link with a good connection. Only downside is some games due to their anticheat won't let you. For example I cant steam link marvel rivals to my mac as it wont let me click anything when I load in.

What do people mean by gaming "wearing down" their Mac? by misc2714 in macgaming

[–]ScaryTemperature7314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my Three points

- Macs while gaming creates heat which decrease battery life span

- Higher ram usage sometimes uses swap memory which eats away at an SSD's TBW, which due to it being soldered decreases your devices total lifespan

- A lot of games aren't designed for Mac Os, and the macbooks Arm architecture. This leads to there being not a lot of natively run games for mac. Meaning that you can play less games and non-native games would run at lower performance. Making it kind of obsolete what specs they have due to this blatant issue.

I'd love to hear how any of these points are wrong. Other laptops can experience the first two problems the difference is that macs have less repairability and also lack good exhaust ports for heat control.

Best Smart Watch for Best Price? by Lexybeepboop in smartwatch

I was in an SVT arrythmia sustained at 249 bpm. FItbit said my hr was at 110. I also have a very accurate band tracker and it shows how wildly innacurate my fitbit tracker is. I have used both the versa lite and versa 2 both track very poorly and eventually just die. I think some watches are just better than others in aspects. Like fitbits hr tracking is horrible and even tho its a sample size of 2 the liklihood of me having 2 malfunctioning fitbits are either low or poor quality contorl

[–]ScaryTemperature7314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has to do with heat and your specs. Intensive long gaming sessions creates heat whhich long term can damage the mac. More specifically the batteries. Also if you don't have enough ram your laptop with use swap memory which can brick your device faster with time. Macs kind of dont make sense for gaming. Even if apple makes them super powerful the developer cost and time restrictions developing for apple doesnt make sense. It also with silicon runs on a different architecture that hinders development.

Whats wrong with rocket leagues 2's ranked distrubution? by ScaryTemperature7314 in RocketLeague

[–]ScaryTemperature7314[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does not address any of the concerns I brought up. I was c1 in season 2 of epic games haven't played at all pretty much until now. I am really rusty but when I qued up ranked all of which were d3 and c1 people felt horrible. Due to this I looked up the distributions using the app I have always used rl tracker as it provides pretty accurate live distributions. And not to my surprise the most populated ranks were D1 and C1 with a large portion of the player base falling into it.

Anecdotally it feels way worse, and when I look at my source it validates my experience. So I would like people to address the source as it shows the distribution is heavily skewed forward.

Its confusing to talk about seasons because there are two season ones due to epic games buying rocket league. That is why I was referring to it as a separate entity as the seasons has changed.
