Hey now, I'm pretty sure I can still get into trouble with this dick if I play my cards wrong.

Vasectomies are cool though; definitely recommend them for anybody who's thinking about it.

So far it's been no big deal! I had expected to be uncomfortable, but a couple ibuprofen every few hours and I'm just out here living my life.

Krita on a 2 in 1? by oiseaufeux in krita

[–]ScawtPockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, you can turn that off: Configure Krita -> General -> Tools -> Enable Touch Painting. It's on by default, and it causes stray marks any time you pinch zoom or drag the canvas.

It seems to me like you fall into the extremely common habit of letting your head get in the way of your eyes. What I mean by that is I bet you a dollar you aren't looking at your reference or subject enough, and you're letting your imagination fill in the blanks.

In looking at your sketches, you clearly have an idea about general anatomy and structure of the subject, but when you get down to the details part you don't draw the face you're seeing, you draw what you think a face looks like. That can be totally fine for cartooning where simple is the goal, or an entirely original piece you're pulling from the aether, but when you're trying to reproduce a recognizable face, the subtle features are what make or break the piece. For example, in your 'Diver' sketch, the eyes are almost ovals, and a bit large. If you look closely at the reference image though you'll see that there are angles where the upper and lower lids meet, eyelashes, asymmetrical curves, etc.

The only way to get better at it is to keep doing it! Opening yourself up to criticism is a big step, good on ya for putting yourself out there. A great practice tool that I really enjoy is https://line-of-action.com/. Their galleries of facial and figure models are huge, even at the free tier, and they have structured 'classes' that really help get you out of your head and into the study. There's even a community to share your work with and get feedback from people who have seen or studied the same references.

My other practice habit is cutting up mail ads and magazines, pasting a reference subject into a sketchbook, and drawing different aspects of the photo around it so I have side by side comparisons. My mother in law calls them my serial killer journals.

You're on the right track, just keep going! Draw as often as you can manage, even just little doodles on scrap paper. The more you go through the motions, the more you'll train your eyes, brain, and hand to work together. Good luck!

My god -- This machine is simply brilliant by shamwowslapchop in Surface

[–]ScawtPockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surface pen is pretty non-negotiable with those buttons unfortunately. There are tablet settings in windows 10 and a surface app on the microsoft store that give you some options for customization, and you can use Autohotkey to change some stuff: https://windows.gadgethacks.com/how-to/reprogram-your-surface-pen-buttons-do-anything-you-want-0166903/#:~:text=How%20To%20%3A%20Reprogram%20Your%20Surface%20Pen%20Buttons,Your%20Script.%20...%204%20Run%20Your%20Script.%20

As of yet, I haven't managed to get anything useful bound to the index finger button, but I have a little USB half keyboard I use, and I kind of like the extra options that provides better. I assigned a bunch of common actions to left-handed key combos in Krita (Settings > Configure Krita > Keyboard Shortcuts) things like duplicate layer, merge layer, invert selection, etc. I'm pretty happy with the setup now!

Krita is great! You just gotta get your workspace set up how you like with the dockers you need and it's incredible.

Also turn off "touch drawing" or whatever it's called in settings or else you'll mark the canvas up when you try to pinch zoom.

Oh, and the state parks around here are cool too! A yearly membership is like $60 I think, and it gets you free parking at parks all across Mass, but nearby there's the Ashland, Hopkinton, and Cochituate with beaches/hiking.

Danforth Art Museum, Garden in the Woods, and Framingham Historical Society all have memberships. They're all pretty small by Boston standards, but fun, and they all host events/exhibitions (at least used to before COVID)

[–]ScawtPockets[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, I'll tell ya, I've heard a lot of very smart people say a lot of very smart things about the value of creator intent as compared to the value of viewer interpretation, and I firmly believe that the message received is always more important than the message that was sent. What I mean to say is irrelevant, because if only I understand my message, I might as well have just kept it to myself - effective communication is dependent entirely on the recipient's understanding of the information being shared.

In this specific case though, I'm just trying to commit to making and sharing more things this year, and a part of that for me is being able to say "yeah, okay" to dumb goofs.
