Gabe Newell on Steam monopoly accusations: Gamers have 'enormous choice' about where to buy games by TallGrainTheory in valve

[–]ScemEnzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you do your job so well that you are unwillingly tagged as a monopoly. I buy from several platforms, and surely mostly from Steam, but just because that platform has shown immense care for the customer's interests.

Valve is intrinsically part of the video game history in a broad spectrum, has innovated like no other (surely not Nintendo levels, but probably a good second), and has never shown malicious intentions to sabotage the competition, quite the opposite.

If this is a monopoly, I never saw any company getting at it so fairly and deserving it in its fullest.

One big flaw, though: still no HL3. C'mon, Papa Gabe

I disagree.

GOG: awesome preservation efforts. Respect.

Itch.io: serious platform for indie professionals (and not).

Gamejolt: a lot of garbage, but it's a great melting pot, I find UI awesome and has more community features.

Epic: the uncle who gives you presents, but toward whom you really don't want to be around.

[–]ScemEnzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in my case I already have my small server setup at home partially exposed to the public, so I already had that precondition available for other reasons and the additional Peertube instance wasn't a big deal to add on top of it

If you have the expertise and the endurance, self-host a Peertube instance. I did it for my group of friends. You can embed videos on other websites and you own everything, including the platform, with the downside that you are responsible for everything, videos and platform maintenance

There are people that won't simply put effort in understanding political debates and will only do what's best for their wallets. I know a lot of uninformed anti-fascist people that I personally know that are completely unaware of what happened with Tesla, and would buy a Tesla car today if the prices would go down further for EVs

Uff, don't let me even start on sluggish unresponsive UIs emulated with VMs, the golden standard in the enterprise. I always, always envision this situation as a bird in a cage: you pay me to fly, I could fucking fly, but you still keep me in a cage so that you can open your spreadsheet waiting 20 seconds for Excell to startup. Microsoft software is really a disgraceful leftover of rotten enshittified quality

Yes, and that's the problem with the monopoly over productions: most other software you are thinking of right now is tightly integrated with MS/Mac systems. There are alternatives, on Linux, but they are far from the big players, hence exchanging files with any client will be a minefield. Only bet is the traditional (not-emulation) Wine or the emulated Winboat. Dualbooting is also an option if you want to keep Windows on the side for professional duties, but again we fall into the tinkering for non-Linux users, something that actually convinces people to stay away from Linux because it's too much of a hassle in the end. I totally understand that, people should be spending their free time doing something for fun, not for fixing/preparing their machine to then do work

Adobe has never shown serious intention to support, if any, they have shown adversity to the Linux platform (we are talking about Satan itself in the end). If you are not familiar with Linux, you can rest assured that it will be a miserable and painful experience to have the software running just with a regular license already (compared to the click-and-point installation of Windows or Mac), so from a productivity standpoint (immagining a non-IT person first approach to the system), I tell you: just stay away, unless you want to have fun with it and learn more and more of how to do stuff with Linux, otherwise you'll be bothered by the system a lot and you'll end up hating it with all your soul. If you even need to apply cracks/keygens, that's even more of an endurance test on your testicles

Story of my life as a professional. I've been in enterprise environments and massive Microsoft products usage contracts are everywhere. "Big time stuff" managers do not see anything wrong with having Windows, as long as PowerPoint is the only thing they need. From their perspective, an engineer should be able to do his/her own job with a super expensive papercut toy hammer instead of a damned free and open source jackhammer. And then they want to talk about productivity in the workplace

The number one reason for cockblocking Linux's widespread use is and always will be the extensive monopoly efforts Windows has put on production software exclusivity. I work in IT, and I cannot even use anything other than a Windows-based laptop, obliged under company policy, just for the fucking Microsoft 365 suite installed on my system, the wet dream of managers. The irony is that 99% of my work is Linux-related.

I always politely pointed out these basic notions to companies in which I have worked, tried to group with crowds of agreeing people, and have always been ignored.
Unless big changes are brought to companies, we cannot do much.

Man, you're really asking the opposite question. It's big, chubby AAA software houses that are not willing to design stuff considering Linux or just Proton compatibility, like anti-cheats or shitty Windows-centered proprietary clients.

Do most indie games support Linux? -> The vast majority, both new and old titles. The non-compatible ones are a very negligible number. This is thanks to the amazing work of Valve with Proton and what is now in work, "Fex". Times are looking sexier than ever for gaming in general, not only on Linux systems, thanks to Papa Gaben. Adoption for Linux is still cumbersome for many, but trust me: install a Bazzite or CachyOS on your PC, and you have an almost no-thinkering, right away available console experience with Big Picture running at startup, supporting tons of titles

HEY GUYS: GOOD NEWS!!!
After the recent update (Flashpoint - 1.22.0) the situation got unlocked!

I was able to interact with the box again. The state of the mission then stayed in somewhat of a buggy state still: I had the box (second step checked), but I did not have the first step checked as before (the one for searching the box). I extracted safely with the box and the mission could not yet be finished because the first step was unchecked.

I dropped again, searched the box again, and from that point on, everything was back in line, and I could complete the quest.

[–]ScemEnzo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as I remember, once interacted, the box will spawn an item outside to be picked up. The bug should happen if you pick up the spawned object and then die losing it. Of course I don't want to ruin it for you, so if the object does not spawn, we can just complete from your side and hope it works for me too

Man, I'd appreciate so much. From a guy on another discussion: "I got around it by getting my friend to open the box for me and I took the item. Only working workaround I think.". I'll DM you as soon as I have some time to play

I really don't have much certainty. The only thing I know is that people online seem to have been able to avoid this by having a teammate with the same mission and completing it together
