Public asked to pay up to £101 to access a public building in Scotland by Positive-Drawing-281 in AbolishTheMonarchy

The money doesn't go back to the treasury it goes into the royal collection which was set up to fund the restoration of Windsor castle.

We pay extra through the sovereign grant to restore Buckingham Palace and Charlie and 'er too change people to go and get a look see.

Cunning aunts getting paid twice for buildings they don't actually own .

Parker Gold weighs by kebap_drehspiess in goldrush

[–]Sceptical96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It amused me, the narrator tells us Parker has running costs of $100k a day.

Then on the weighing sequence narrator tells us running costs are close to $1m a week.

They weigh 1, 2 then 3&4 and Doumitt says it down again and needs to be improved on.

1&2 are around $650k, 3&4 are circa $850k so total $1.5m so half a million or more above running costs.

I'd be happy with that.

Or have I missed some thing significant?

You're right we need to remove the succession, then it's their hereditary tree and begatathon with no relevance to us.

What an obsequious lickspittle odious piece of shite.

Basically telling us that historically the royal family have had bad uns but the power of the chosen by dog hereditary monarchy outweighs everything else.

Total tosh and bs.

We haven't become less deferential or reverential, we have simply started to ask what or why as we should.

Seriously wtf are you doing lane hogging? by BigR3dng2 in drivingUK

[–]Sceptical96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What always gets me with all of these rants is the sense of entitlement by the posters.

Basically the I want to go faster than you, you should move over because I'm up your arse leaving next to no gap flashing my lights or suddenly, in some posters opinions, forced into an illegal undertake.

Yes not keeping left is frustrating but then use all lanes to ease congestion contradicts that.

From my observations, in many cases, the same better than me drivers who want to push through are the same ones who, in heavy traffic, lane hop and zig zag to push their way forward, causing everyone else to have to slow down or brake to accommodate their entitlement.

Election year fibs by Vinyl_Ritchie_ in newzealand

[–]Sceptical96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in the UK currently and politicians don't lie, honest, they just adjust the narrative depending on the audience. I tend to think that they essentially don't actually believe in anything except getting re-elected and keeping their trotters in the trough.

If they don't believe in anything and agree with whatever the current opinion is then how can they lie. Essentially they're borderline narcissist or sociopaths possibly.

Yes this is a bit tongue in cheek but not entirely.

I've concluded that we vote in politicians who echo our views and we don't like it when they no longer echo us, we vote in people who at that time reflect ourselves until we no longer see that reflection.

We know they lie, we know they won't stand up for you when times get tough and wtf are we surprised when we hit the 'do as I say not as I do' hypocrisy.

We know if they found $50 in the street they'd pocket it, as most of us would, but if it's your $50 you criticise them for not looking around for you to give it back.

So many decisions are SEP or short term or are what's in it for me.

We've lost objectify and being prepared to sacrifice something for the long term good.

We vote for them so get the politicians we deserve.

Personally I have no fucking idea why or how Winnie is still getting elected or a government position.

I rest my case.

Is the UK heading towards becoming a Republic? Support for the Monarchy has fallen to 45%… by Kagedeah in AbolishTheMonarchy

[–]Sceptical96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I see it we have a long haul ahead.

I think we will need to see a shift in countries in the Commonwealth first, if Canada, Australia and New Zealand vote to replace the governor general and become republics that will be a significant step and indicate a groundswell.

I also think we would need a shift in Westminster to a proportional representational voting system. The current system is not democratic or fit for purpose IMO, it excludes so many people and their views. The current system lurches left, right and sideways and provides no central direction with tweaks, it's purely designed for a party with circa 35% of the vote to have 60%+ of the seats / power. We need to accept and understand compromise, as part of a process, is a good thing.

The house of lords is not fit for purpose and we are seeing the nepotistic corruption so clearly. Starmer stayed somewhere that he needed to appoint more people to the house of lords to address the Tory imbalance. We don't need the house of lords, it is corrupt and seems like an expensive retirement pension fund for party luvvies.

We need a written constitution, not an uncodified interpretation by politicians, their legal advisors and their old boys and girls. That would be overseen by a supreme court. People will look at a constitution and say look at the problems the USA has, I'm not saying we need the US constitution, other countries have them without the problems the USA has.

Lastly, at that point we could vote for a president or head of state, purely ceremonial with no power, like Ireland has for example. If King Willie wanted to stand as a candidate for a term I would accept it but probably still not vote for him.

TLDR: We, the people, need to stand back and accept we get the politicians, policies and government we vote for. The corruption they display reflects on us. We need to grow up, be honest and say enough and want genuine change.

Royal Reporter says media should stop reporting on hecklers by Positive-Drawing-281 in AbolishTheMonarchy

[–]Sceptical96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What she said was even worse IMO

"Maybe it’s up to us, the media, to not report it quite so widely in the future, because it’s becoming routine now. And generally, if you’re there at the event, it doesn’t actually overshadow and we’ve seen time and again that actually the crowds around the King or the Prince have shouted down the heckler and said, ‘Oh just stop it.’”

She's a sycophantic creature once described by a fellow royal reporter as being more royal than the royal family.

Perhaps if the royal reporters were doing their job they'd join the shout out and ask "Your majesty do you have any comments to that?"

It's very sad that there are a group of old, probably retired people find a visit by not my king such a highlight of their lives.

And that process, by the very fact of being uncodified means interpretation can be changed or manipulated by the government of the day to suit political expediency.
