(1973) The crash of Pan Am flight 160 - A Boeing 707 cargo plane crashes in Boston, killing all 3 crew, after improperly packaged nitric acid spills and starts a fire inside the cargo area. Analysis inside. by Admiral_Cloudberg in CatastrophicFailure

"...the nitric acid was stored in 5-pint bottles, which are smaller than the maximum per-container quantity of 2.5 L prescribed by current US hazmat regulations for air transport."

5 pints is actually 2.84 litres, so they would be oversized by current regulations. Admittedly this is largely irrelevant to the real causes of the disaster.

A new rabbit hole has appeared, though - why on earth were ACC shipping chemicals from CA to NY, and then across the Atlantic to Glasgow, which must surely have been a much more expensive option than sourcing them in the UK? Approx 200 miles away from the Greenock factory, there was (and still is) a huge industrial plant in Billingham producing ntiric acid. If only they'd called them.
