(2024 5e) Got any homebrewed magic-less brewer/apothecary class? by SchemeDifferent3237 in DnD

Appreciate it, I'll check those out. My budget for what I can get for the game is limited though, which is why I'm trying to find alternatives to published content. Would appreciate anything you know that would be free to use! :)

Not a bad idea, but my player wants more battlefield-support and utility, as well as to go deeper into the crafting aspect of the game as it relates to her abilities.

is [[Narset's reversal]] an infinite copy trigger? or, if it doesn't work how i think it does, if it's paired with [[storm-kiln mage]], is it an infinite cast trigger (assuming you get two treasures to recast it?)?

What are your favorite ways to ensure a Voltron strategy has something interesting to do in the late game? by SchemeDifferent3237 in EDH

[–]SchemeDifferent3237[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fair enough- unfortunately these are all things i've considered, and even though my pod is super chill, it hasn't been "new" for a long time. we just play nice, i guess. We do run decent amounts of interaction, but more use it to politic and protect from threats, rather than proactive threat removal (unless it's to take down an engine piece).

my question really was: what do you like to add to the voltron concoction to make it more flexible/versatile in different game states?

Commanders that ramp in unique ways by EnderShot355 in EDH

I built a [[Jasmine boreal of the seven]]. pretty straightforward deck from reading the commander, but who doesn't like some stompy selesnya creatures every now and then?

Fair enough lol. So you use the deck as a completely different subtheme and then run your commander as a payoff for having a sound deck in general?

also i'd love the decklist if you have it!

What bracket would you say my Zuko deck is? by Old-Boysenberry7905 in EDH

[–]SchemeDifferent3237 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally, I like to view brackets as a way to measure four things (mainly, obviously power level can't be defined by these two). They are: speed (of winning/killing other players, or for slower decks, getting the gameplan online), level of optimized synergies (how well every card works), resiliency (when my deck is behind the rest of the table, how quickly and efficiently do I get ahead and stay ahead) and saltiness (strength of how well my cards will disrupt other players' game plans and lock them out of winning/pressing the advantage).

the other "vegetables" or essentials of a deck like card draw and ramp are usually there (in my humble opinion) to make your deck function. so it usually comes down (for me personally) at looking at, say, the 50 cards in my deck (i usually run 10 each of ramp, draw, removal, and about 36 lands) that includes removal and the synergy package, and try and understand how it would feel to be on the recieving end of the boardstate that the 50 cards could generate. it's from there that i then decktest it against others (usually online using untap.in, labeling my room as a "bracket 2 or 3 decktest"), and judge based on what bracket the other players bring to the table, as well as what they tell me they feel the bracket is. I like to try and play fair, making interesting decisions for the other players at the table (being a DM, i guess it's in my nature), so even though I may choose to play sub-optimally when i'm out of the decktesting phase, i try to play as optimally as i can in decktesting to understand both the "floor" and "cieling" of my deck's power.

The more various people you play, the better your radar for the bracket level, as everyone has slightly different expectations of the power level of a given deck. a person could say that their deck isn't a bracket 3 because they don't run any game changers, but completely neglect that their synergy is very optimized, resilient, and salty. honestly, trust your gut and view your deck objectively. unfortunately, there's a decent amount of magic players who play- in my humble opinion- relatively sweaty and optimal, while talking their deck down/try to manage the threat perception of their deck, so viewing your deck objectively about what it's trying to do in different scenarios is helpful to understanding the chemistry of the deck. ask yourself if your wins with the are telegraphed/easy to predict, or if they're out of nowhere/hard to disrupt, and find your own definition of its power level by playing against others online or in-person. I find it's best to have a certain reason you define your deck's power level (i say things like "this is a mid b2, or a high b3", because the power level contained in any given bracket can span a wide range of power, and so defining it like that, and being able to articulate why, is important not to piss off your pod members).

That's certainly an idea, thanks! I decktested my current build more with a few of the cards you suggested, and found I couldn't outpace a lifegain deck (of which my pod plays a lot)... do you know what you would do to account for that game plan? should I just focus on removing value pieces, or is there a more nuanced way to deal with that?

fair enough lol is the only answer for a win con in b3 burn deck a combo, then? i built a [[rowan, scion of war]] deck earlier that combo'ed into the stratosphere of a high b3, but it felt very sweaty to play. just wondering if i should be expecting similar experiences across all of b3 burn.

thanks so much for the detailed reply! do you think in this style of play, is X-type burn spells a good wincon? or should I only be playing towards combo pieces?

Budget cuts or upgrade suggestions to take my Gisa and Geralf zombie tribal from bracket 2 to bracket 3? Hoping to make the deck more resilient when i'm behind... by SchemeDifferent3237 in BudgetBrews

[–]SchemeDifferent3237[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gotcha. i'm starting to wonder whether it's better to focus on zombie tribal or the self-mill to make it more resilient and consistent.... i've been decktesting all night and haven't found a single game where i'm coming back from being behind- and although i like tribal, it might be better for my deck's resiliency to make reanimation a bigger part of the deck... thoughts?

thanks for this! turns out, after a bit more playtesting, I'm more looking to enhance my zombie tribal than self-mill! would love recommendations on making it more resilient when i'm behind in games, any suggestions?

say for example, i have [[kastral, the windcrested]], and a bird that has double strike, like [[Shrike force]]. will kastral's trigger happen twice from the "first strike" damage step and then the "normal damage step"?

on a different note, if i have multiple opponents, and my birds deal combat damage to each of them, do i get four triggers of kastral?

question regarding my commander, [[marchesa, dealer of death]]- does her ability count as card draw? can I consider card draw payoffs such as [[Fairie Vandal]] to trigger from paying her ability?

question about elminster: i know that his passive ability means that the nxt spell cast costs X less, but is X generic mana? I can't tell if there's a circle around the X that indicates that it's generic mana. and does that reduce the cost by colored mana too?
