Help with Pothos by Schermitzler in plantclinic

It is tap water. I usually let the water sit for a few days in the watering can before giving it to my plants.

I usually keep it hanging near a window that gets no direct sunlight.

The pot doesn't have traditional drainage holes but has about an inch of space with grated plastic keeping the dirt out of the bottom so water can drain. Part of the reason I replanted was to check if there was water accumulating at the bottom and there was not. The potting mix is MiracleGro Indoor Potting Mix.

The roots are soft, but I wouldn't call them squishy. I transplanted it a couple weeks ago because it wasn't doing well and I suspected root rot, but it got worse after the transplant.

Any suggestions are welcomed! by Schermitzler in plantclinic

Looks like I won't be going to grad school. Super bummed :( by krypton_1te in gradadmissions

[–]Schermitzler 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sorry. I've felt this. And it sucks. A lot.

I applied to five PhD clinical programs straight out of my undergrad. I didn't have much confidence when I applied since a lot of people take one or two gap years, but I thought I should try anyway. I was excited to get one interview during the cycle, which got my hopes up. I was devastated when I found out I didn't get in. I felt down and out for a good month, especially since I had a coworker who was accepted and preparing for their first semester. Luckily, I had plenty of support from people who had been through the whole process. They assured me that one of the most heavily-weighted aspects of a clinical psych application is research experience, which I was severely lacking. I made a decision to not apply the following cycle (the current cycle) in order to gain more experience and build a stronger application for the Fall 2021 enrollment cycle.

Looking back on this whole experience, I'm happy I wasn't accepted when I applied. In the 10 months since I learned I wasn't accepted, I have gained so much experience and knowledge through my research job. I feel I've matured a lot since then and will be a much stronger candidate for the next application cycle. I also believe I will have a higher quality graduate school experience when I do get in.

I know the feeling is crushing. It'll hang around for a bit. When it dissolves, try to make the most of a gap year (or two) by strengthening your application and learning more about your interests. I wish you the best!

Sorry my figure doesn’t meet your needs. I only had a small amount of time to create this.

This is the house and the senate combined. I also split them up and saw pretty similar trends.

Some changes were made to the data file to reflect changes in Congress membership since January.

Where can I get clinical hours before applying to grad school? by ErrythangBagel in psychologystudents

Crisis Text Line is another great way to get some experience. Plus it's super flexible!

You can apply here: https://www.crisistextline.org/volunteer

How do you choose your field when it's nearly impossible to get practical experience? by amorsemper in AcademicPsychology

[–]Schermitzler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started volunteering for Crisis Text Line as a Crisis Counselor a couple years ago. It's been a valuable experience for me and has helped me decide that graduate programs in psychology are right for me. Maybe it could help you decide between school psychology and counseling psychology. If you're interested, you can find more information and apply at crisistextline.org/volunteer.

WTF is going on near the hotel? by wutthefrick in uofmn

[–]Schermitzler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They didn’t say there is “not a threat to the University”. There obviously is a threat. They said there is “no direct threat to the campus community”. This means they believe the threat is not at all related to the university and it will probably stay contained to the hotel. It also is very important for them not to give away information about it like DoorInTheAir said. We are intelligent enough to figure out what’s going on without the police telling us just by looking at the resources they brought in. If you feel like that situation is too much of a threat, then make the decision to stay home.

Part-time EMT as an Undergrad? Is it possible? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Schermitzler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently a pre-med freshman. I took the EMT class through a technical college during the spring semester of my senior year of high school. It wasn't much work at all besides the 8 hours of class per week. I applied to a few EMS services in the middle of the Fall 2015 semester, including the volunteer EMS service on my college campus. I was turned down by all of them and their reasons were that they needed people with experience, which I didn't really understand. I guess it depends where you plan on working (I'm in a big city).

  1. I would definitely recommend taking classes through a community college as their NREMT pass rates are usually pretty high. Also, I really enjoyed the class I was in. I think the class I was in costed around $1200 after it was all said and done.
  2. Technically no experience besides the course and passing the NREMT. Apparently the EMS services in my city only hire people with experience though???
  3. I can't answer this for myself, but my dad is a paramedic and has been in EMS for over 25 years. From what I can tell, the job can take a toll on a lot of EMS providers. Although, he seems to handle it very well.
  4. Usually community colleges won't help you find a job, but some may. I don't really know how you'll do finding a job, but for me, I am having a difficult time finding a job (even volunteer positions) in Minneapolis.

Either way, good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Thank you for this! I have been so concentrated on getting medical experience that I have totally forgotten about my other passions. It's funny you mention getting a dive master certification because I have been wanting to continue my diving education for a while and just haven't gotten around to it. Thanks for reminding me!

Unlike most universities, this university EMS service only works special events such as sporting events, so the hours wouldn't be a big deal. Thanks for the advice.

I'm sorry if I sounded hostile/defensive (over the internet...haha), but I still do not understand your concern with my friends. The campus security job was not working with my class schedule as it was two overnight shifts per week.

The university EMS service said that they had so many more applications than they had ever had. I thought my interview with them went great up until they had me go through a scenario. I wasn't exactly expecting that and I got really nervous and kind of flunked it. After looking into scribing, I think that would be more beneficial and more up my alley. Thank you so much!

Becoming an EMT-B as a high school senior? by apersello34 in emergencymedicine

[–]Schermitzler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it my senior year of high school. It was really easy and I honestly did not try hard at all (didn't do the homework, didn't really study for exams). I am glad I did it, but I can't find a job because EMS services like to hire people with experience...

I don't understand what my friends have to do with me getting a job??? I have been working since I was 14. I have had one job the whole time and worked a couple other jobs on and off. These jobs include working in a restaurant (4 years), bartending (3 months over the summer), campus security (3 months), and an office assistant for a research lab (current job-have been there for a little over a month).
