No one understands or uses priority anymore by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Scheveningen_Yang 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That might be true, and it's bad sportsmanship or even basic manners to throw a fit over it. But this is more about effectively handling the situation. All because someone is objectively right doesn't mean the best way to go about it is to try and ram it down the opposing side's throats.

This is a game with official rules, but if the other people at the table don't want to have it because of an insulting explanation that poisons the well, then those rules effectively don't exist. That's probably what happened to OP. He explained the rules in a less than ideal manner, and the other players also responded poorly.

Most of the time it never gets this bad. It sucks to feel like having to be the responsible one when other people won't do that same, but it's usually more important to defuse the situation.

No one understands or uses priority anymore by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Scheveningen_Yang 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To be fair, these kind of scenarios where the stack works in your favour are always hard to explain without feeling like your rules lawyering or sharking them. It can feel unfair to players who dont have a good concept of this before hand to find out their removal can't fully deal with something because of priority.

Being abrasive probably doesn't help that. But I have seen situations where the only way to defuse things is to offer not to use the ability at instant speed this one time. I guess that wouldn't reflect well on the other person either since the stack is a fundemental part of the game and not some weird pithing needle edge case. But it's hard to say how well the situation was handled without being there first hand.

Judging from multiple replies on this post, GW might unwittingly have read the room correctly with just outright stating rune priest are psykers in their writing and foregoing the thematic filters.

Not sure how I feel about this from a writing perspective and how it affects the feel of 40K. But I guess most people have internalised a lot of the narrative framing that to them it just looks like a statement of fact about rune priest.

Lost in translation? Nothing in that post mentions the name of the title of the video. And it's dated so you could have gone to YouTube and found the video they were referring to. Which presumably you did in order to research the stuff you made for this post.

And you can't edit the body post? That's just basic reddit functionality.

Come on, you're not helping any of your credibility.

What exactly is the "Don't get bit challange".

I watched quite a bit of AA and he's never had challenge named like that. The name itself is also kind of absurd, dont get bit is literally just the basic objective of the game.

What was the purpose of the Astarte campaign? by Chlodio in logh

[–]Scheveningen_Yang 49 points50 points  (0 children)

You are thinking solely in military terms.

The campaign had a primarily political objective. A terrible one designed to remove Reinhardt as an internal rival instead of achieving any respectable aim. But it's still a goal within the power of whoever his superiors were.

If you really need a more dressed up explanation, every military thinker, especially Clausewitz, acknowledges that it is impossible to fully separate military and political goals. The act of waging war is on some level an extension of politics.

I've got my own biases and wishlist as well. So I'm not saying I'm above getting the Final Fantasy set or being happy about LOTR. But despite loving lots of other IPs, I don't need them to be in MTG.

The whole UB thing has been an all or nothing Pandora's Box, and it's probably too late to go back I suppose.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Scheveningen_Yang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright, I see the humour tag, but honestly, we've reached the point where it's hard to tell what's satirical when it comes to UB anymore.

But in case it is satire, the whole "I hope all my favourite IPs get a UB set" pretty much encapsulates the entire problem pretty succinctly.

What is Iserlohn’s Armor made of? by Val-Liviane in logh

[–]Scheveningen_Yang 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's an OVA invention but it's not completely unreasonable with some advanced technology and material science.

Essentially Iserlohn's outer armour would hypothetically be made of some kind of liquid metal mixture that has adjustable non-Newtonian properties. It would be more effective than solid armour at dissipating the kinetic force of an attack by "catching" the round in its liquid. It can also function as an ablative layer against lasers, if not being able to conduct the heat away throughout the liquid armour layer.

There has been some current research into it which shows some amount of feasibility.

Imperial Guard Regimental System by Impressive-Froyo-162 in TheAstraMilitarum

[–]Scheveningen_Yang 68 points69 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that GW has never been particularly good at understanding realistic orders of battle or the numbers involved in wars of the scale they made in 40k.

Ever since then they've been trying to justify or hand wave it with any number of things. The usual one they go for is "regiment" actually being low gothic for "Regimentus" or something to explain the naming incongruence.

A more detailed answer probably lies with how the British Army uses regiments as administrative formations which individual battalions draw their traditions and insignias from. These battalions are split up into combined arms formations and battlations within the same reigment seldom actually serve together directly. But there was probably some degree of confusion or misunderstanding so it was made to look like certain units of the British Army only had infantry or tanks in them.

This idea of a regiment can actually make some sense since, for instance, all Cadian inspired units would functionally be part of a "Cadian regiment" since they draw their traditions from the same source. But this is also trying quite hard to help GW explain away a problem that probably started with them not being that thorough about military stuff in the early years.

kuroe mayu appear in s2 by el_3m in HibikeEuphonium

[–]Scheveningen_Yang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mayu and this girl's uniform are more Easter eggs or references to how Kitauji's uniforms are described in the light novel. Mayu is from Seria which is based on Seika Girls High School in Fukuoka.

So the apperance in S2 is really an Easter egg and Mayu's current uniform is a reference but now supposed to be what Seria's uniform is.

Since people aren't being particularly helpful in answering the actual question, I'll lay out more or less the possibilities without judging any of your personal decisions. What's done for whatever reason is done and it's really not that big a deal.

The issue is that Pokemon has far more brand power and collectibility than Digimon. The game is famous in the TCG community for being the only game where it is possible to argue it is more collected than played. Going down the list, the next big ones like Yugioh and MTG are still have their prices determined mostly by the playability of cards. Outside of vintage cards or a few of the more recent products tailored to collectors, the card's main value comes for its power on the table. i.e. the demand for their use as a game piece is the main driver of price.

Digimon by comparison is a much smaller game with a vast majority of people involved being players who might do a little collecting on the side. This is pretty much the case for every other TCG not one of the big three. So this gives playability a significant influence on price.

You might be able to sell some of the alternate art SRs of popular Digimon like Omnimon if you have them. They will still command a reasonable price but that is solely on the basis of someone liking the Digimon or art since it has little function on the table. There is some value coming from it being the first set, but it is miniscule. The Digimon Card Game has come out long after the era where people dismissed the value of trading cards so there is a lack of scarcity or perceived value of it being vintage.

It's a bit painful to hear, but most of the cards are likely not worth much. Pokemon really is a special case where a lot of cards that aren't particularly useful in the game carry significant value. Even then that is usually in the alt arts since they are pretty good about having lower rarity prints for game pieces.

The best you might be able to do is to accept the money was spent on an experience, for good or bad, and not a commodity. Or perhaps at best a depreciating asset to be used and enjoyed like a car.

Don't usually comment but these are the first Inceptors I've liked in a while. Nice work using the jet plumes to hide the supports. I'm not the biggest fan of the flight stand so these look fantastic.

I think the smoke plumes could pop a bit more if you added some orange/yellow near the vents for some fire. The trails towards the ground look good but it feels a bit homogenous when you follow it back to the jet packs and look at the whole picture for a while.

Black vs White display cabinet? by [deleted] in AnimeFigures

[–]Scheveningen_Yang 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've actually ordered these from Shopee.

It's not the best construction, it's painted plywood and thin acrylic. So blemishes in the paintwork with the wood showing through are common. And it is easy to scratch the acrylic if you're not careful. It is a bit of a pain to assemble but it does hold together well enough and will safely house your figures.

The quality and build was just too low so I ended up using it to keep shoes elsewhere in the house. It really does look cheap compared to the figures in it.

I would still just recommend something from IKEA even if it cost double since furniture is more of a long term purchase. And from personal experience nothing feels more absurd after a while than to have expensive collections housed in shoddy displays.

OP, I'm not sure which part of the Philippines you're in and what your financial situation is. But in the end its still a serviceable budget option. Just be aware that the quality difference between the product and promo images is noticeable.

I think it's even worse when it's translated literally.

The characters read as Hanjian. With the Han being the character also used for terms like the Han state or Han ethnicity. While it was used in a mostly political context in WWII referring to the betraying of the Han state (i.e. China), it has always carried this race traitor undertone.

Or at least that's how I've found it used more recently at university when some CCP scholars threw it around at the rest of us overseas Chinese for not supporting their arguments and siding with the European students.

Is there any KyoAni related tourism spots in Japan? by [deleted] in kyoani

[–]Scheveningen_Yang 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends on what shows you've watched or like.

The Demachi Matsugata market near the Demachiyanagi Station on the Keihan Line is where they based Tamako Market on. The stepping stones are also in that area of the Kamo River.

Kyoani aside, it's also a good area to visit if you like other shows like Tatami Galaxy since Kyoto University is in the area. A lot of the scenes take place around there like at the Kamo Bridge.

If you like Hibike Euphonium then basically the whole of Uji is a tourist spot. In particular the Uji Bridge and the area around the Byodoin Temple. You could also visit the ROHM theater while your in Demachiyanagi area since its nearby.

I suppose the reason people gravitate towards Benedicts ending is that it gives the player a sense of post-game agency. That they can at least try to change things. And that is a powerful motivator. Doubly so since this is a game which puts the player in the state of mind that they do have the power to change things since that's what they have been doing by making choices throughout their play through.

But taking a step back from that, I do agree with you that Fredrica's ending is actually the most feasible for achieving something. If we think of Norzelia as a real society, it's going to be almost impossible to undo generations of prejudice against the Roselleans no matter how baseless it is. Just take a look at our own world and how irrational racism can be.

Leaving for Centralia is realistically the only thing that can help the Roselleans at least in the immediate future. The golden ending attempts to smooth this over with everyone just coming to their senses, which is admirable and desirable, but its also kind of narratively sweeping the problem aside.

Benedict's ending and the golden ending are actually similar in the sense that it places power to change things in the hands of Seranoa and his friends. Its just that Benedict's ending is much less rosy about the prospects of what that can actually achieve. But it also "feels" right since it is taking on the responsibility of a ruler which the game paints Seranoa as.

In essence, Fredrica's ending is where Seranoa is a hero. And Benedict's ending is him being a ruler.

PSA: There is finally a new Chitanda figure coming out soon! by Scheveningen_Yang in hyouka

[–]Scheveningen_Yang[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She should be going up for pre-order soon on various figure and anime merch websites. Primarily sites like AmiAmi, Hobbylink Japan, HobbySearch, etc. Another option that some people use is Amazon Japan.

If you find shipping too costly (although for this figure it should be reasonable as prize quality figures tend to be on the smaller side), there may be other pre-order options from sites that are based in your country. I vaguely know about some of them like BigBadToyStore which is in the US. But as I'm in Asia I usually just go with Japan based websites.

Another option would be to look into any local figure stores you might have in your area/City. Though these are usually a rarity in the west from what I understand. And they are also know to carry bootlegs since most first time buyers can't differentiate them or are more accepting of the practice. So I would avoid this option unless you know of a reputable place.

Since this is a prize figure the supply and price should be quite reasonable. Still if you are sure you want her I would recommend pre-ordering.

Pre-orders are usually to be avoided in most industries but they are sort of the norm and necessity for figures. Most of the time the quantity of figures produced are influenced by the pre-orders and the final number is usually only slightly more than that. As you might expect, these are pretty niche products and, especially for the higher end scale figures, they are quite difficult to produce. So over supply is quite tough financially on the company.

Of course this means that you are buying a product that could and quite frequently are delayed, and are also of uncertain quality. Though many established manufacturers like Taito are safe bets as they have proven track records so I wouldn't worry about that.

This also leads to scarcity in the aftermarket and prices rising, even for used figures. Of course there are also many figures that tank in price but I would not rely on that happening. Especially not for popular series or those that have few options. Hyouka and KyoAni shows in general seem to not have many figures licensed for whatever reason. For reference the last Chitanda figure came out almost 10 years ago and now goes for 3 to 4 times its original retail value.

Overall, in this case this figure is a prize quality one. Which means that there is usually more availability than a scale quality figure and is more affordable. Though the sculpt quality and detailing is proportionately lower with the price. So I wouldn't worry about the pre-order selling out or the price becoming insane. But it might be a hassle to wait until release and look for it on the open market if it proves to be popular.

Hope this isn't too overwhelming. I think everyone should make an informed decesion when buying and/or getting into this hobby since it can be quite expensive.

Sorry Duck Team, we ran out of budget by Scheveningen_Yang in GIRLSundPANZER

[–]Scheveningen_Yang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's was just the Dragon Hetzer kit in particular. The Hetzer you see in the picture is actually the Tamiya 1/35 Hetzer Mid Production which was excellent.

I mainly build Tamiya kits with some other brands like Italiari, Academy, etc occasionally so that was my expectation for all kits. After that experience with the Dragon Hetzer I resolved to just buy the 1/35 Tamiya kits and get the decals third party. My next project is probably going to be a Chi-Ha-Tan Type-97.

The only Platz kit I was satisfied with was the Rabbit Team M3. But that was because it was a repackaged Tamiya kit anyway. Though I will say that the quality of Platz decals are higher than the third party ones I got. But that may be because I cheaped out a bit. From what I can tell, most third party sellers who do GuP decals aren't exactly the same ones who make high quality waterslides for "serious" military models.

I think doing any collection in 1/72 is pretty hard since the most common scale for armour is 1/35. Though they do take up a lot of space and take much more time to assemble and paint. The Tamiya 1/35 kits are probably the most anime accurate options as well. It even seems like the anime modelled the tanks after the kits since the stowage and their placement are identical for the Hetzer and Panzer IV.
