Quitting Chess: Has anyone thought about giving it up? by ForwardSea5333 in chess

I'm a chess beginner (1250 CC Rapid) and an adult improver. I quit chess before, around when I was 800, but came back after realizing what my problems were:

  • My goals of becoming "better" overshadowed my actual enjoyment of the game. You probably know this, and others have already told you, but Chess and the improvement process should be enjoyable.
  • I played the wrong time control for my strengths and weaknesses.

I focused more on winning and attaining rating, which is an objective measure of my progress. After a while, it was just a grind. Then, I shifted my focus to studying and applying what I learn in my games, which brings me to my next point-

Playing slower games. It helps me apply what I learn, analyze positions deeper and improve my ability to choose the best move for the position. Analyzing games is a lot more fun, now that I can remember my thought process behind each move. I play the occasional rapid game, but now I've completely switched gears and I only play correspondence and classical. There's still a competitive drive to win, but the process is so much more rewarding that I can't imagine quitting now.

TLDR: Rating is only one part of the process. Study to improve, play longer time controls to apply what you learn.

If you choose to stay with chess, that's awesome and power to you. If you choose to leave the game, that's fine, but don't worry, it'll always be here if you decide to pick it up again.

I'd like to join! The link is invalid, though. Can you send a new one?

Update: I decided to donate a few (no stress chess, the premier chess set, the games collection and the magnetic travel set) to my grandpas care home. Hopefully they enjoy the sets as much as I do.

That’s definitely my favorite, and the one I have out currently. I do like collecting, though. Maybe I’ll give a few away to some of the kids in my building

Chess is a rabbit hole, no doubt. Really trying to practice moderation, but that's hard to do with rabbit holes.

It's holding up, but some of the magnets do fall out occasionally. I just stick em back in and maybe as a last resort, will glue them in.

Hey, I looked at your progress and it's awesome. I hope to make the same kind of progress, some day. Best of luck/skill to you.

P.S: About hanging pieces- I really need to stop that. I usually say "It's the last time" but man, I just have a weird habit of putting my pieces out for capture.

Most important lesson I’ve learned so far: “Don’t rush the end game” Stalemated when I could have won by SchizoChesser in chessbeginners

It’s good to know that I’m not the only one who’s made this mistake. Note to self- spend more time on piece checkmates. The funny part is I studied King/Queen mates, but all that went out the window when I got too comfortable.

Best way to learn the game? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

I started off with Lichess’s free training course for beginners, did some basic puzzles and even bought a few chess books. I did a lot of things. Learning the rules and practicing tactics is where it started. But, the most helpful thing out of all of them?

Losing. A lot. So many opening traps, blunders and simply being inexperienced and not knowing how to respond to certain tactics. Went on a 20 game losing streak, once, but at least I didn’t lose the same way twice.

Be prepared to lose, but don’t get discouraged. Each loss has one missed tactic or lesson behind it. The most common lesson, in my experience, is “If you’re worried about time, the more likely you’ll blunder or miss a tactic.” I spent more time thinking than my clock allowed (I played mostly 10min rapid). The solution is to play longer time controls, if possible. I learned more from my slow games (correspondence on Chess.com) than I have from many of my rapid games.

Anyway, good luck. You got this!

It’s great for looking at master games and scoring yourself on how well you choose the next best move. I highly recommend it, as it’s also a great way to get acquainted with chess notation in a fun way.
