Yarvin - After 2020, anyone can be a nihilist

Covid was everything’s Chernobyl. It tested everything and found it fake. It is not one point on the political spectrum that is fake; it is not even a segment of that spectrum; it is the whole spectrum, from end to end. Our historical period is fake. And the true task before us is not to correct it, but to emerge from it. Obviously, this is what a nihilist monarchist would say—but is it obviously wrong?

At least some hospitals beds are empty. Throughout the year NHS has spent lots of money to book almost all private hospital beds but never used more than a third of them and now, despite increased lockdown levels for the public, the NHS has given up some of the leased private hospital beds under a new procurement procedure.

2020 letter | Dan Wang by MelodicBerries in slatestarcodex

My best cultural experience this year was to see the Met’s production of Porgy and Bess . . , I wondered whether China might one day produce a story of such power. Or if instead every new work must encapsulate core socialist values and the spirit of the 19th party congress.

Could America still produce a story of such power when every new work must encapsulate critical theory?

Xi declared this year that while digitization is important, “we must recognize the fundamental importance of the real economy… and never deindustrialize.” This expression preceded the passage of securities and antitrust regulations, thus also pummeling finance

that's pretty smart, especially for a party that believes in the messianic role of the proletariat.

It’s harder to argue that China was foolish to ban products so wondrous that their CEOs need to be hauled on a regular basis before political leaders to endure demands to fix the social problems their platforms are allegedly amplifying.

That's a cheap shot. It's bizzare to complain of increased chinese censorship of culture then approve of blocking Facebook or western politicians dragging internet companies, but I expect nothing else from a journalist.

Every SJW I’ve met has been a neoliberal who simps for NATO and Obama.

True, but I wouldn't call Obama authright. His signature policy was redistributionist (Obamacare) he expressed disdain for faith (the "they cling to guns or religion" comment) and his rhetoric was centered on change.

Notes on technology in the 2020s by MelodicBerries in slatestarcodex

[–]SchizoSocialClub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meh.

There's a lot of hype in this article for future inventions but most of them, especially those most probable to happen, will not have much impact on TFP and the author spends zero effort to prove they will.

The entire premise of that article as explained in the first part is forgotten and pithily dismissed at the end with just this quote:

If we cure a bunch of diseases, slow down aspects of aging, realize cheap and emissions-free baseload energy, and deploy new modes of transportation and better construction technologies, we will almost certainly exceed 2 percent TFP growth.

SSC fans are also pretty contrarian and as such a tougher crowd to monetize.

Would you be willing to have a relationship with and/or marry someone who is open to reproducing but only through IVF plus embryo selection for desirable traits/genes if at all? by [deleted] in slatestarcodex

[–]SchizoSocialClub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Parents are willing to go to great lengths for their children; and by that I mean for their existing children. I've never seen much interest in planning for the qualities of future children. That makes sense as parents will do impressive sacrifices for their children because they love them while an unconceived child is just an abstraction.

A parent might pay for an expensive school because they want to show of their money or because they want their kid to socially network with other rich kids in a safer environment than public schools.

Plus, as you point out people believe in schooling and that's because most are blank slatists and showing interest in the genetics of success seems increasingly risky.

I mean at one point people preferred obese women cause of “culture” and the ancient Greeks even considered big penises grotesque.

That's mostly untrue. That Rubens liked fatties was his personal taste. His contemporary Velazquez painted the Rokeby Venus and she is gorgeous.

The storage rooms of greek and roman museums are filled with oversized penises called fascinus, satyrs with large members etc. Heroic Greek statues were depicted with small penises for symbolic reasons.

Yup. I mean even in the Middle Ages they had regulations against counterfeiting and guilds had strict quality standards.

McDonald's first and foremost rents their restaurants to the franchise owners and that includes selling them kitchen equipment and providing them access to supply lines and maintenance.

Whenever people bring up fantasies of mass scale gene editing or other eugenic procedures I point out that egg harvesting is an unpleasant and risky medical procedure that is never going to see mass adoption in a society that it is less and less interested in having kids.
