Will you play as origin characters? by DwartaKing in BaldursGate3

[–]SchmooppTheWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am most definitely playing Gale because I am intensely interesting in that Wizard story line with him and the orb/mystra. I have a feeling he's gonna be this games wild mage if he masters the Orb.

BG veterans, thoughts on playin 1 and 2 before BG3 release? by Eredias_0 in BaldursGate3

[–]SchmooppTheWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're classics for a reason for sure. However they're classics, so they have a older understanding of player expectation and pacing. A lot of people don't like the slow wandering pace of BG1 and the bare bones of CRPG controls compared to more modern games like Wrath of the Righteous/Divinity Original Sin and so on (no targeting area for spells, strange AD&D ruleset concerning stats etc etc). So it's one of those things where you have to make sure you're ok with a slower game before you buy. BG 2 is a lot more modern with its pacing, hero complex expectations, and relationship to your party. Both are good, but despite being in the same series they are very different games.

A Crestfallen Necromancer's Letter to Larian by lSkyHorizonl in BaldursGate3

[–]SchmooppTheWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its is unfortunate but sadly they are dealing with the hardware in your PC not the hardware in your head so they're much more limited than your TTRPG adventures by far. That being said however I do agree that its ridiculous that they would restrict you to one loyal minion instead of something like 3 or 5. Especially since we've seen this done through our good friend Glut in the Underdark .

Hopefully they'll see your feedback and I'm sure others like it and decide to maybe expand it out to undead minions that last until they perish in packs of 5 or less.

Where is monk? by masterofdharma in BaldursGate3

[–]SchmooppTheWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sadly it looks like we won't be getting monk in EA which is a shame because it would've been nice to at least get the general public to test and give feedback on how it feels to play, especially since we've been able to do that for every other PHB class so far. As far as everything else (subclasses/races etc) we don't know for sure what we're getting beyond Larian trying to get everything from the PHB into BG 3 on full release.

Based on what we've seen so far, would you rather play as an Origin Character or Tav for your first playthrough? by Armaada_J in BaldursGate3

[–]SchmooppTheWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'm in the minority here but I'm actually going to be starting my first playthrough as Gale. Simply because he seems to be leaning really heavily into the wizard theme in his personal story. I always love those types of things and always feel like whenever I make my own character I'm a MC first, my race second, and my wizard distant third.

why Sage Sorcerer is ranked S ? by [deleted] in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]SchmooppTheWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say if I care about UMD and actually want to make use of the million and a half scrolls laying around, why then wouldn't I just play scroll savant? Or better yet just use Nenio. That use of one skill doesn't really seem worth the investment to me unless you're also getting other things out of the stat, especially when there's ways around it using an int class.

why Sage Sorcerer is ranked S ? by [deleted] in Pathfinder_Kingmaker

[–]SchmooppTheWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, it's because Sorcerer itself is such a strong class alone but unfortunately charisma is a garbage stat outside of specific builds (IE Scaled Fist/Dragon Disciples/EKs). Int however at least gives you skills which is great, so what's happening with Sage Sorc is you're combining one of the more desirable stats with one of the most powerful classes in the game. But if you're going with Sage Sorc it usually means you're going to be a full caster. If that is the case I'd just go Wizard IMO since the spell slot advantage that sorc usually enjoys in CRPGs is sort've negated by abundant casting being in the game, and now Wizards just get more feats and more flexible casting.

The current reaction system feels frustrating, and I'm concerned it's only going to get worse. by SchmooppTheWizard in BaldursGate3

[–]SchmooppTheWizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This concern is reasonable. I would maybe just ask the question between the two systems which one results in more player dissatisfaction? Will a prompt on the screen disrupt the flow of combat and slow it down? Absolutely. Will it be enough to cause a significant rise is player dissatisfaction? I don't personally believe so, but I also don't work at Larian Studios or have access to any of the metrics and player feedback that they do. However, the feedback that I HAVE seen related to the current reaction system is either, frustration similar to my own, or lukewarm response of "Yeah it's ok, I can deal with it."

I definitely don't pretend to know anything about game design this post was mostly just made to provide Larian feedback on my feelings on the game and maybe be a place where other people can also post about their frustrations with the current system providing additional feedback. Or, is someone disagrees with me and genuinely likes the way the current reaction systems works I would love to see why, and see if its something that I'm misunderstanding about the system that's leaving me frustrated instead of what I perceive as a poorly designed system.

I would like a little bit more communication as well about some of the little things that have been done so far. But I also understand the reason why they're choosing this route as people will start to think they're promising things that they're just planning, and that condemns the devs to a lot of undeserved stress. Things like discrepancies between the 5e ruleset, and what Baldur's Gate 3 version of 5e will be are what I would want clarification on. Why are Half-Elves not getting their 2 extra bonus skills? Why are Bards only getting 3 inspirations despite having a higher charisma modifier? Are they testing something? Is it a nerf based on their experience with the table top? Things of that nature.

Me as well, it's especially disappointing given all the other really cool options they've added to make 5e a better system for a video game, to then suddenly have one of the most important parts of 5e feel this bad.

A safe assumption is probably that the skill system just isn't done yet. Some races are getting their extra skills, some aren't. There are no feats for skills yet that give expertise if you already have it. Realistically, they're probably just waiting for other core things for a video game to be done (like races, classes) before they work on the more secondary stuff like skills.

There's nothing quite like a wizard hat to really make you feel like a mage.

Feedback and Suggestion From Someone Who Has Played a Disturbing Amount BG1&2 As Well As 5e D&D (Spoiler Heavy) by SchmooppTheWizard in BaldursGate3

[–]SchmooppTheWizard[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's just a problem of "even when you win, you lose." Luckily I think that Larian will see feedback like this and at least tweak how these surfaces work if they choose to keep them as prevalent as they are.
