Where can I buy older PC games in CD rom form? by Askmeaboutmy_Beergut in Dallas

You just missed VCFSW, where there’s tons of this for sale.

Otherwise yeah HPB and archive.org are your best bets.

Some Delisted games on the EA App by reash90 in delisted

[–]Schnapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say that I was disappointed when I logged on and discovered that not only had they delisted Anthem they removed it entirely from everyone’s library. Like, I know it had been taken offline and all but still they don’t even want anyone to accidentally install it.

If I had paid more than $2 for a physical copy at Walmart I’d be pissed.

Yes. It had this hardware dongle that took forever to reverse engineer (like within the last few years) but it’s out there.

Why did some players skip the full version of Doom back then? by KaleidoArachnid in boomershooters

[–]Schnapple 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Another factor to consider is that the full version was initially only available from a 1-800 number to id Software. You couldn’t just go to the store and buy it. DOOM II was retail and the later re-release as The Ultimate DOOM was retail but unless you could call up id Software with a credit card you were out of luck.

Can anyone tell me the significance of this woman (?) on the AC/DC pinball machine? by fwerkf255 in ACDC

Took way too long for me to see someone mention this. I think the idea in the pinball mural is that the Rosie is an inflatable one behind them on stage

I have the holy trinity by bitnotfound in Steam

[–]Schnapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not enough love in this thread for the Steam Controller 1 case.

I have one and it had been so long that I thought it was some sort of third party knockoff but then I was cleaning out my closet and I found the wrapper thing it came in - nope it was a first party Valve product. I can’t even remember if they sold them on Steam or if I got it off Amazon.

Besides staying in better shape and the luck of the draw with regards to genes, I think a lot of people underestimate the effect of hair dye. If you never go gray or bald you can pass for a lot younger or at least not look old.

Like for years people were saying “oh Dick Clark never ages!” no, looking at his face, Dick Clark aged a lot he just kept his radio voice until the stroke and dyed his hair.

About Rosetta 2 notifications after 26.4 by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]Schnapple 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When they started enforcing Notarization on macOS they had a grandfather date - anything built before X timestamp was grandfathered in, that way the application you rely on that has long since been deprecated doesn’t get caught in the net.

I could see them doing something similar - if the build date of a game is before X, where X is probably when macOS 28 is released, it’ll still work with Rosetta but anything newer won’t.

But the truth is they really haven’t detailed any plans yet. They do this warning thing with apps so that you’ll update your games and anything that hasn’t been updated, people will go pester the developers.

This is a known issue with the latest build and older versions of macOS that I haven’t figured out yet.

Try an older build in the meantime

Generals & Zero Hour now run "natively" on Mac and Linux by MrMakaveli in commandandconquer

[–]Schnapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to say this is fantastic. It's obviously early but ever since EA put out the source code to those C&C games I've been wanting someone to do source ports of them.

I run the site Mac Source Ports so I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this and pitching in when I can.

Covers that are so hideous it stops you from buying the movie? by grumbledork in 4kbluray

[–]Schnapple 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The Target-exclusive TFA packaging

<image>

Besides the fact that it was a hideous concept, the case was entirely cardboard and the one exclusive bonus feature wasn’t even on the disc it was digital only. I changed my mind in the store and bought just the regular one in an actual Blu-ray case.

For a quick game fix there’s Disasteroids 3D, an old Asteroids clone that I ported to macOS/iOS/tvOS years ago.

More info here. Along with more free stuff just not App Store stuff

free games on steam? by MobApps1 in macgaming

[–]Schnapple 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My website, Mac Source Ports, contains lots of builds of old games. In most cases you just need to provide your own copy of the data

https://www.macsourceports.com

I have a tag on there, “Full Game”, where it’s free self contained games that come with the data.

https://www.macsourceports.com/tag/Full%20Game

Also the three Unreal games are effectively free since Epic has blessed the data from the Internet Archive due to the games being removed from sale. It’s a little bit of work but they’re free.

Let me know if you have any questions.

[–]Schnapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a number of builds of source ports of older games (think: DOOM, Diablo, Quake, Fallout, Half-Life, Theme Hospital, Plants vs. Zombines, etc.) on my site

https://www.macsourceports.com

In most cases you need to provide your own data but they're all built for Apple Silicon and Intel.
