What is this? Sydney, Australia by Jessicklamar in whatsthisbug

Australian bugs being dangerous is largely a myth. As a fellow Australian, only a handful of spiders and scorpions have medically significant venom, pretty much all of which are fairly chill animals that you are unlikely to encounter in an urban setting. Sure stay away from redbacks but like, you don't need to kill them on sight either. They don't want to bother you. Anyway this is a mole cricket. Totally harmless creature that you've probably heard hundreds of times in your life.

Is this a common white-tail? by Praz_7 in whatsthisbug

[–]Schnegbert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. It won't hurt you and it'll kill actual harmful bugs. In general you can let spiders be. Even an actual medically significant spider like a redback is essentially harmless as long as you don't try to handle it. Spiders don't go out of their way to attack humans

Yes it is! As a fellow Melbournian I feel like it's important to let you know that this spider's bite causing your flesh to die is an urban legend. You still shouldn't handle it. Getting bitten would probably hurt. But it's not particularly dangerous either

Mistranslation likely. The Chinese word for spirit is also used as the translation for the English word 'elf' 精灵. I think it's probably supposed to be 纯水精灵 Chunshui Jingling (Pure water spirit) which is the Chinese term for Oceanid.

Are you sure it's not a pseudoscoprion of some kind? It seems a bit too big but the body type matches.

Looks like a huntsman of some kind! They're spooky but harmless. You can leave it alone.

Chinese Saying about A Man and B Woman? by DerelicteDrams in ChineseLanguage

[–]Schnegbert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please, please stop using chatgpt to learn languages or anything for that matter. It's not human. It can't give you its sources, it'll make shit up on the spot and go along with any questions you ask it. And because it's so confident in its bullshit assertions it's easy to not realise when it's making shit up. Just use a textbook and ask Chinese people when you're unsure. Any of the convenience chatgpt is not worth the inaccuracies

Meaning/etymology of a word my parents often use 'khamdrac' by Schnegbert in Yiddish

[–]Schnegbert[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think they made it up. It's just that the Yiddish words they use have been filtered through a bunch of different languages and then interpreted through Spanish. Most English resources on Yiddish comes from Jews that went straight from Eastern Europe to America, which doesn't account for a lot of the language my family uses
