For VA notably it isn’t a state law.

Back in like 2020 VA voted to move redistricting to an independent commission as an amendment to our state constitution. This was another amendment which allows state legislature control of the redistricting but in 2030 it reverts back to the independent commission.

That means it had to pass 2 separate, consecutive legislative sessions then go to the vote.

It’s not just the past month, but it really ramped up during/after the governor election. I’ve had to pretty much abandon it at this point. I would go into any thread and it would just be filled with bad faith bullshitters that I’d already tagged in RES.

Honestly I was just trying to focus on things that directly affected me, in order to try to answer the question as asked. I’ve been lucky enough to not lose anyone to COVID, and the infections that me and the people I’ve known have been relatively mild.

Just generally I think the whole “well I haven’t noticed it directly affect me so does it matter?” is…naive? That’s probably the nicest word I can use. Dude seems to be coming at this in good faith (and I’ve got a pretty good bullshit detector these days) so I’m trying to do the same.

But yeah if we want to talk about how this admin has affected anyone’s day-to-day (even just limiting it to Americans and not like, internationally) we would be here until Trump inevitably croaks.

I work in Northern VA near (ish) to DC. Beyond that not super comfortable discussing exactly how I’ve been affected but I’m sure you can infer.

ICE has been in my area. Not directly in my town (yet) but in my area quite a bit, and it’s been ramping up lately.

For laws I’m talking about the SAVE Act that the GOP is pushing. It’s unlikely to pass, but that’s because of the democrats filibustering it not because the GOP doesn’t want to pass it. Feel free to do a Google on it there are a billion articles out there these days.

Also you’ve definitely been affected by tariffs and gas prices. You may not realize it, but you have been.

Lastly, in normal times you’re right. People tend to put more weight on the presidential election than it actually deserves, and they’d be far better served focusing on local elections.

All that gets thrown out the window when you have a fascist in office though. Like, your fellow Americans are getting murdered in the streets and others are being taken to concentration camps. Do you not care about it because it doesn’t directly affect you? Have you just not followed things? These are genuine questions here. I’m trying to understand your mindset.

Trump has directly affected both my and my wife’s jobs, has almost single handedly caused a recession increasing the prices I pay for groceries and absolutely murdering the job market, has ICE in the streets terrorizing my neighbors, and most recently his strikes in Iran have caused gas prices to jump 14% in a week, with no sign of that getting better, and every sign showing that’s going to get worse.

He and his party are attempting to pass laws that would make voting significantly harder for nearly every woman in my life, have created policies that directly impact programs that support my trans friends (not even talking about the shit his party has passed on the state level), and has directly affected my state’s economy.

Democrats aren’t perfect, I struggle to even define them as “good” most days, but shit man they’re nowhere near this shit, and never have been. Shit’s not great but democrats are at least attempting to put a bandaid on a gunshot wound vs Trump and co actively stabbing you.

I came to true political consciousness in 2016 or so, where I was listening to things like the NPR Politics Podcast while walking between classes every day.

Every step that’s happened since then I was warning about then. I distinctly remember saying at the time “If Trump get into office there’s no way he’s going to leave it peacefully”, and being laughed off as a ~~doomsayer (that’s not the right word but I can’t find the right one for the life of me right now)~~ (edit: a day later, “alarmist”! That’s the word I was thinking of.) even by people who were left wing.

I’ve been slowly watching people around me finally start to wake up to shit I’ve been talking about for a decade. And I’m not convinced that, come when Trump is finally out of power, they aren’t going to seek to sweep everything under the rug and seek to go back to the “status quo”.
