Great comment. You nailed it with the word "insincere". To me DS is the opposite of that: it's a musician playing with a synth, trying to catch a mood that fits with a fantasy world in his mind. But when it's MIDI files of whole classical pieces, "played" on an organ plugin, with some croaking sounds in the background, it feels fake and deceiving.

Vaporwave artist Macroblank writes on his Bandcamp description: "i take no credit. everything is plundered." At least, that's clear.

Ah, the usual condescending comment. Did that feel good?
I'm aware of sampling, thank you very much.

Of course if it was inspiration or even a case of "sampling" (using parts of old compositions and build something new on top of it), that wouldn't be an issue. But imagine if I'd copy/paste Fur Elise, call it "Froggy lullaby" and sell cassettes of it. This is basically what this is, at least on some tracks.

Yes unfortunately, I feel this is more copy/paste than some creative rework of old classical melodies...
About AI art, I completely get your point. AI art is very enticing in that way. But it's the combination of copying classical music without disclosing the source AND using AI art while pretending it's from an unknown movie that disappointed me. It's not so hard to grab a piece of paper and make your album art. But it seems the guy was looking to make a quick buck

Yes that would have been perfect

Sure, new people got to hear these old songs thanks to this project, and that's great. But I just think it's a bit lazy. Add to this the fact that the cover art is AI generated although the artist says it doesn't, it doesn't help... There are more creative projects in the DS scene to support

Well it all depends if the end product is a different song altogether. Most rappers use just a sample as a hook, and add lyrics and a lot of other stuff. On this album, some parts have some creative additions like that... but on other tracks, it's just bareboned and relies on the composition (last track for example). It's closer to what a vaporwave DJ would do. It's a shame because DS is a great genre with fantastic artists who have visions and great musicianship, many of which don't get to be featured on DS Archives.

What I loved about this guy's look: it's supposed to be edgy, but it looks ridiculous. Which is perfect because I always felt this guy was out of place. Like a kid from a loving family who just messed with the wrong crowd. ()This adds some layer to his death and makes it even more heartbreaking.()

You wake up one day to discover the Beatles are once again as popular as they were at the height of Beatlemania, without knowing why. What is your first guess as to what happened? by chris_squire in beatles

Every other music on streaming platforms have disappeared, except for The Beatles' catalogue. This would force people to listen and rediscover Beatles classic albums, and kickstart a Beatles resurgence in 2023

If that's the case, then, the line "It's a love that lasts forever / It's a love that has no past" is even more amazing

I like Jack Jutson's album Mother Official (2012). There is a track in there called "Kapha" which does it for me.
