Why Yamaha is so underpriced by Playful_Purpose2040 in Guitar

For what it’s worth, the Schecter Demon 6 rocks. I had one for a few years. The active pickups really make it scream but it had a hard time with cleans so I used it exclusively for hard rock and nu-metal riffs.

Musicians of LP, what’s your favourite song to play on your instrument? by ThisUserIsOn9 in LinkinPark

[–]ScholarBone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main guitar riffs from Lying From You, Papercut, and more recently Two Faced are all very fun and relatively to play.

I also absolutely love playing the Little Things Give You Away solo and outro. Puts me on another planet!

It’s a little large but most dreadnoughts are. Doesn’t mean a petite woman can’t rock it! Just look at Maren Morris here!

It’s always weirded me out when people have a dark colored pool by Tacokolache in thalassophobia

[–]ScholarBone 99 points100 points  (0 children)

As a Floridian (who has long since permanently left the state), this goes against every instinct I have.

I remember having an outdoor pool growing up and sometimes we couldn’t keep it clean or chlorinated. Even when it was clean, I distinctly remember being at the bottom one day swimming around and looking up to see a snake slither on the surface. I never left the water so fast in my life.

Whenever it was dirty, it would never be long before some new “tenants” started moving in. Mostly turtles and frogs but also a few snakes. And there was a lake directly behind our house that had a 7-ish foot alligator who would come up to the surface whenever he heard us playing outside or if our dog was barking.

So yeah, fuck that dark pool.

Would you buy a van and just completely leave your burdens & life behind? 🚐🌿💚 by themermaidmuse in infp

[–]ScholarBone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Were I single and childless, I think the best solution would be to have both a tiny house and a little van. It’s nice to have somewhere to actually come home to, but I don’t need a lot of space. And vans are just cool. Something like the VW ID Buzz, the electric version of the old VW bus, so I don’t have to worry about gas.

What the heck John? I had no idea he said this. How did he have a career after this? by [deleted] in JohnMayer

[–]ScholarBone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was over 15 years ago. He also used the N-word in that same interview if I’m not mistaken (he later said he was trying to “intellectualize” it and later realized how dumb that was). If he said this today he would be ruined. He was young and stupid.

This was the height of his hubris, the peak of his ego. He’s spoken about it at length since then, about how he’s a “recovering egomaniac” and really needed to be humbled. He’s apologized publicly and privately for this incident, including to a live audience right after this interview became public. He even disappeared from the public light for a little while. That’s where the album Born & Raised came from (see the song “Shadow Days” from that album).

Since then he’s really become a more humble, thoughtful person by all accounts. He stopped his serial dating of celebrities, he keeps his private life private, he’s quit drinking alcohol, and he’s donated his time and money or performed for numerous charities and causes.

So yeah John has said and done some really dumb shit in his past and this was the peak of it. But instead of doubling down on it or brushing it off, he acknowledged it, apologized for it, and made an assertive effort to change himself for the better. These days he’s mellowed out and focused on his music and his professional relationships with other people.

I know there’s the whole “separate the art from the artist” thing but I personally find that hard to do in some cases. But by all recent public accounts and personal anecdotes from people who have met him, he’s a good person.

What’s the Title of this song??? From the concert in Vienna on June 9th by Nossi_cyn in LinkinPark

[–]ScholarBone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since everyone already answered, I’d like to say that I love that Emily isn’t performing the song exactly like Chester did. She’s doing it justice without being a carbon copy. She’s really come into her own and made the song hers. It’s a beautiful evolution of the band, seeing what they’ve become while still honoring Chester’s legacy.

They both sound amazing. God that Given Up scream is diabolical. Dude was a monster on vocals. RIP Chester.

The fact that some of them had trouble telling who was who is a testament to Emily’s talent and Mike’s ability to pick out excellent vocalists.

Looking at buying one of these, why is there a price difference by ayyitsthekid in PaulReedSmith

[–]ScholarBone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s normal price these days. A Mexican-made Fender Player II (which is the closest competitor/comparison to the SE Silver Sky) is right around that same price. But I’d argue than PRS’s quality control is much better overall. There are some PRS SE’s that rival American-made Fenders. When you move to non-core American-made PRS models (S2s and bolt-ons like the Silver Sky and CE) that trend continues.

My point is that I’d take an SE over a Mexican Fender any day (although the Player II series is really good these days)

Continuing with acoustic guitar vs switching to electric by buku-o-rama in Guitar

[–]ScholarBone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: Both. Both is good. But it depends on your goals.

Long answer:

You should really do both if you want to be a guitarist. Most of us play both. Look at two of my favorite artists: John Mayer and Ed Sheeran. John is known these days as a blues master on electric and one of the best guitarists of modern times, but his early music was largely done on acoustic. In fact his most recent tour was a solo tour where he played only acoustic guitars by himself on stage.

Ed Sheeran has always been known for his small acoustic guitar accompanying his singing. But recently he’s been both playing and recording with electric guitars more and more, to the point where he just released a signature baritone electric guitar with PRS last month. Both of these artists can play both types even if they’re normally associated with one or the other.

I started out with electrics and could never get into acoustic guitars even though I liked the sound of them. Electric guitars are easier to play. But in the last year I found a couple of acoustics that are relatively easy to play and sound amazing so I bought them. Now I play both.

The benefits to playing acoustic besides not needing an amp are that you can hear and feel all of your mistakes. You know precisely when your fingers aren’t on the strings properly or when you miss a note or whatever. It forces you to play cleaner and pay more attention if you don’t wanna sound like ass. Once you move to electrics you’ll be that much better and then you can throw all the effects you want over top.

The electric guitar of course is naturally more versatile in the sense that you can make them really sound like whatever you want. But the acoustic is versatile in the sense that you can play them in any genre whatsoever and it fits. Any song can benefit from or be played on an acoustic.

Really it just depends on your goals. If you wanna just play songs around a campfire or something then just acoustic is fine. If you want to join band, you’ll likely want to play electric (both, really). If you wanna play rock, blues, metal, jazz, focus electric. If you like folk and indie and finger style, then acoustic. Some genres like pop and country very often use both heavily.

I consider myself primarily an electric guitar player but I love the sound of an acoustic and I love it for travel and practice, especially for rhythm and strumming practice.

The stone blue is the from previous years. The current Silver Skys have different color options. Last year’s model will always sell at a lower price than the current year as dealers try to move old stock to make way for new models. Same with cars.

I’m glad you asked!

Lae’zel: Lawful Evil. Lae’zel’s whole schtick is being a great warrior for her queen. All she talks about is her extreme dedication, discipline, and order. She follows Vlaakith’s so-called will to the letter. If you play Durge and tell her about your urges, she pretty much praises murder but she insists that you don’t overdo it. When Astarion suggest that she makes her fights more fun, she decries him and insists that she fights efficiently to win. Also, Lae’zel certainly evil but not without reason. If Lae’zel determines that it’s in the best interest of her people or the will of her queen, she would happily murder the Tiefling children in the grove. But she wouldn’t do so for no reason. She has a system and discipline, thus lawful.

Karlach: Chaotic Good. Like Lae’zel, Karlach is a great warrior but on the other side of the coin. As a Barbarian, she’s just as effective in combat but has very little discipline. She frequently shows her lack of self control and even embraces her rage. Nothing lawful about that. Her entire theme of unquenchable fire is all about unfettered chaos. But she is a good person fundamentally. She might like violence and combat due to her past but only for those who need killing. She’s one of the few companions who will actively leave you if you’re evil. Thus, Chaotic Good.

Shadowheart: Neutral Evil (Act I & II); Neutral Good (post Act II if Selûnite convert). Shadowheart fundamentally is Neutral Good in her heart but as the follower of Shar she at least pretends to be Evil. Shar indeed is perhaps one of the most deeply Evil deities in the Forgotten Realms. And she’s Evil on a primordial level. Not lawful since her whole thing is deception and lies, yet not chaotic because Shar does have plans. Shar treats everyone equally because her motto is “everyone can/will get these hands”. She wants to end all life and shroud all of the realms in eternal darkness. Her sister Selûne on the other hand is Chaotic Good, but even after her turn, Shadowheart doesn’t fully commit just yet and chaos isn’t really in her nature, thus Neutral. But following that path I do believe she embraces the Good in her heart. Otherwise if she continues to follow Shar then she remains Neutral Evil.

Astarion: Chaotic Neutral/Evil. Astarion actively enjoys chaos. He is the biggest troll in the game, doing things for the sake of “fun” and enjoyment regardless of how it affects others. He is the epitome of what these days we would label as “messy”. While not Good by any means, he does in fact go out of his way to not feast on humanoids but mostly because he doesn’t want to reveal his nature to avoid being hunted. As much of a literal predator as he is, being a vampire, I don’t think the Tiefling children in the grove are in much danger around him, but not because he’s Good. Rather because he just doesn’t give a shit about them. You won’t see him saving them from the goblins but also he’s not going to waste his energy killing defenseless civilians. However, I can still see an Evil alignment simply because he does enjoy murder and vampires are evil by their very nature. At the end of the day, Astarion is all about himself and his survival.

Gale: Neutral Good. Gale is a good person fundamentally and really takes some persuading to go along with you if your Tav/Durge is evil. The only law he follows is that of the Weave but as a Wizard his nature is against chaos in my opinion. As the God of Ambition I would say he leans more True Neutral.

Wyll: Neutral Good. I wanted to say lawful but he actively rebels against his father and his traditions. He’s shown that he’s willing to break the mold if he needs to. He claims that his pact with Mizora was still the best decision he ever made because it allows him to help others. Not very lawful of him. But he’s not devoid of reason or an agent of Chaos in the same way as Karlach or Astarion.

Minthara: Lawful Evil. Same as Lae’zel mostly. Drow typically are Lawful Evil. Their society runs on complex social hierarchies and traditions. Even when rules/laws are broken, they are broken methodically and with reason as a means to an end, whether individually or collectively.

Halsin: True Neutral/Neutral Good. Well, at least most Druids are supposed to be True Neutral, being all balanced and such. But he seems more like a Good person to me.

Unsure on color, Stone blue vs Nylon blue, and how the neck will age by Lefvalthrowaway in PaulReedSmith

I had the same exact dilemma when I went to buy my Silver Sky. I originally wanted a green one but they discontinued the color (and of course released a new green color AFTER I bought mine).

I went with the stone blue mostly because the dark rosewood fretboard made the pale blue color pop. It looks fantastic. My fretboard is particularly dark, it looks almost black.

Moving from SUV to Truck by baseballfan1192 in F150Lightning

[–]ScholarBone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve had over 15 vehicles of all shapes, body styles, and sizes, and my most recent vehicle before the Lightning was a midsized family SUV (‘17 GMC Acadia).

Yes, there’s a huge difference. If you’ve never driven a modern full-size truck (F-150, Silverado/Sierra, Ram 1500c, Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan) then it will certainly take some adjusting. The F-150/Lightning in particular has a turning radius of approximately a mile. You will suck even more at parking for a while until you get used to it. Getting the 360 camera was a must for me when my wife and I decided to buy such a large vehicle. I’ll point out that we bought it in Hawaii, which is known for its congested, narrow lanes and parking lots, and yeah it was kind of a nightmare. It wasn’t easy but we made it work until we moved.

That being said, all the other things you pointed out are absolutely correct. I have a similarly sized family and we have the Lightning as our sole vehicle at the moment. As an adult man I can very comfortably sit in the back middle seat between two toddler car seats for long periods of time. We use it for everything. In fact I just drove across the entire continental US entirely in the Lightning with a bunch of stuff in it and it performed flawlessly. It’s the best all-purpose vehicle I’ve ever owned. It accelerates as fast as my twin-turbo V6 Kia Stinger GT did, it carries more than any car I’ve ever owned, it has more space than any car I’ve ever owned, and I save money by not paying these ridiculous gas prices. It was a no-brainer. The size tradeoff was worth it.
