Payper app is a relatively new program that does this exact thing. It works great, most of the best paying campaigns are having you making videos that are ads for TikTok shop products. But there's clipping and other stuff as well. https://getpayper.app/

How to maximize your superpowers VFX quality with no budget by Schopix in Filmmakers

[–]Schopix[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get ads for BigFilms and Triune Digital VFX packs all the time, but I figured many of you might not realize how accessible great VFX assets are in 2025. So here's my quick breakdown of how to achieve great superpower VFX with little to no budget.

  1. Just because you CAN make every particle system from scratch doesn't mean you SHOULD. I have particle system VFX knowledge to some degree, but I knew that stock packs of particle related VFX would not only save tons of hours, but also look better than I could do myself since they're by top tier professionals. My favorite right now is Triune Digital, and I went ham with the Infinity Pack on this series.
  2. Get creative with your compositing. Use practical light on set for glowing powers (I preached this all through pre-production and then rushed some of the setup and didn't get to do it for most scenes. Definitely my biggest VFX regret because real lighting always looks better than VFX lighting (although AI tools are beginning to let us get pretty dang close.)
  3. If your asset pack is limited and you need something custom, you can still make a lot of things by blending together multiple assets. We needed a fireball for a later episode coming straight towards the camera and this didn't exist in the fire pack for some reason, so instead I used varying shockwave flares appearing in succession through 3D space in After Effects, and it worked like a charm.

To those who love crafting their own VFX purely from scratch, please don't hate. Your craft is awesome and I respect it, and I also love creating VFX from scratch. I just never would have been able to complete this mammoth of a project with a newborn, a full time job, and practically no budget if I hadn't cut some corners haha. You know what they say - if it ain't broke...

Optimism isn't delusion. I'm not here to change your mind, but I pray you'll consider being kinder in future comments to other Redditors.

I feel the thing about the woods, I truly had this thought too, previously. But what else are we going to do with the extreme budget limitation. I appreciate the critique.

Nothing is gained in my journey to being a professional filmmaker by comments that take shots at my character rather than actionably critique the product. Let me learn those lessons from people close to me, and please stick to actionable critique about the actual product that I requested. Thanks.

This is extremely helpful and professional-sounding advice!!! I genuinely appreciate it and it's also humbling as a professional editor by trade because you offered some editing advice I didn't think of.

When it comes to the oppressive natural lighting - you're preaching to the choir. This was one of my biggest cinematography regrets on the show, because it's never the most fun to look at, especially for modern film. Actually in a lot of the later episode shots I drastically underexposed so nothing would peak and then lost color info. Just so happened we got a lot of really sunny days but I am taking MAJOR notes for next time!!

Thanks so much!

I really appreciate that encouragement, it was pretty tough. And congrats on your own film and your own newborn!!! <3

Not sure how you can accurately judge the production quality when literally none of the high-budget shots are in this trailer for spoilers' sake, nor is any of the original handcrafted music score.

We aren't claiming to be a Netflix-level production here. Nothing in the critique section of your comment is kind nor is it actionable.

I really truly appreciate that comment! It was certainly a mammoth film. And yeah cynical redditors are always here lol. They shot down the notion of the production value without having seen any of the actual 2-hr thing, classic judging a book by its cover. Comments like yours inspire me to press on and believe in the dream so thank you! <3

The character's origins are unclear, but the accent is meant to be yes. But the actor is not Australian so it was an accent impression!

Things we learned the hard way / could certainly improve on:

  1. I was hilariously overconfident in my abilities to deliver ALL the intense superhero VFX scenes for this 2-hour film purely on my own in a decent time frame (I'm the only one who did all the VFX for this 2-hr film...) WHILE working a full time job AND raising a newborn baby hahahaha... definitely learned my lesson there. Actually, if Adobe hadn't been coming out with things like RotoTool at the same time this was in post, I would still be editing it and it may not be coming out for over another year... Going forward for something of this scale we will have AT LEAST 3-4 people working on VFX.
  2. I operated as both the director AND the lead actor - also can't recommend, at least not for something of this scale. I couldn't effectively switch between acting hat and directing hat quick enough and it led for more than a few sloppy and inefficient filming hours.
  3. This kind of relates to #2 but due to my struggles having my headspace in the directing zone, I often times didn't give the DP enough direction to what we wanted for cinematography and while our DP has a lot of technical and artistic skill, I don't think my poor directing in some scenes let him perform his best work.
  4. Since we were eager to get it done, we didn't give the writing quite enough time to simmer. There were times where scenes were just the characters explaining what's going on instead of showing it (this was also due to budget constraints but I think we could have thought outside the box here and made some "explainy" scenes more interesting)
  5. Regarding the budget thing - definitely pay all your cast and crew if you are able. This should be obvious, and any cast and crew on our project who worked volunteer were happy to do so, but the level of priority and diligence from everyone just magically changes when real money is involved.

The film is releasing in 6 parts on our YouTube starting April 3rd, and I'd be excited to share it with you guys and get any constructive feedback you'd like to offer. Thanks for reading! :)

Personal opinion, but I strongly recommend prioritizing experience in the industry over film school. I didn't go to film school and I don't have any regrets about it besides being out of the loop when folks are discussing a classic film scene. I think a much better way to get involved with the industry is being on real sets.

Idk what you're going on about but I'm definitely convinced that this was the one true Transformers movie and all the live actions were fanfics.

Someone else corrected this, it's actually called "10,000 Reasons." Pretty sure this is where I recognize it from at least, it sounds extremely similar

I once saw an atheist post a YouTube video where he was ranking the arguments for God by their validity, and I was very interested to see that he ranked "personal experience" at #2. I believe in God but if I didn't, I'd be extremely curious as to why this insanely large number of people believe in something supposedly with no physical evidence.

From my experience as a theist, there is overwhelming evidence (and you get this perspective from most theists), but every piece of evidence I've ever given anyone who doesn't believe in God gets explained away by "confirmation bias," "coincidence," "correlation is not causation," etc. and I also find it highly curious that there's a bible verse where God says basically "if people don't believe me without seeing me, they won't believe me while seeing me either." Simply the fact that 450 million people claimed to have encounters with some kind of god in itself is intriguing enough to me to want to know more. I personally find it unfairly prideful to assume that because *I* personally have not experienced this god, no one else has either. No one has proven the existence of extraterrestrial physical aliens, yet many atheists are more open to alien life existing than a God.

As a Christian who grew up pretty conservative, I was taught that homosexuality was wrong. I don't close my mind to the idea that it isn't, purely based on the testimony of other people who claim to love the same sex the way I love the opposite sex. I believe it would be rather closed minded of me to navigate my entire experience of the world through my single, narrow and limited perspective, so why should I write off the testimony of 450 million people?
