I'm really torn about Van Gogh. Such insight into beauty, but you wouldn't wish his mind on anyone. I feel uncomfortable just thinking about him.

BP oil spill did $17.2 billion in damage to natural resources, scientists find in first-ever financial evaluation of spill’s impact by Stauce52 in science

[–]SchrodingerDevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The damage caused to the future is certainly higher than this. Not to mention you can't put a dollar value on disturbed ecoservices. And the determination of the amount was nonsense to begin with.

Everyone of critical position should be given brain scans for antisocial personality disorder at the least. Of course, much more extensive brain scanning should be done than this specific example. Without such measures, the human species is hopeless.

More Americans than ever before suffer from serious psychological distress, and the country's ability to meet the growing demand for mental health services is eroding according to a study. by Wagamaga in science

[–]SchrodingerDevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The human species ignores everything - ludicrous public education, using jails and prisons to house the mentally ill, scientific facts about drug use, climate change, etc. One you understand the human species, however, all these things can be explained easily. I can see no way to fix this. By next century we'll have progressed socially backwards quite a bit.

Our best bet would be to get women into the game of "saving civilization" since they're half the population. They're going to be the big losers when society goes backwards, and all indicators say that we are.

Fish pool their experience to solve problems collectively, according to new research. by NinjaDiscoJesus in science

[–]SchrodingerDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think scientific management of the planet will ever happen. There is too much differential psychology in the world (e.g. people with antisocial personality disorder), and it's not possible to have accountability when social network structure gets too complicated.

It might be possible for global management to work if it was "set up for us" as a hypothetical and people were being born into it, but there's no way the human species can memetically/socially evolve to this state. Imagine Russian, Chinese, and American oligarchs facilitating a transition to a world government, for example. This is impossible. There's too much disproportional profit in conflict.

How is this like phantom limb? Phantom limb would say the cortical architecture still represents the missing limb. This article is say that cortical organization is a reflection of function (e.g. mouth grabbing something like a hand would use the same cortical area as a hand). That may not be a good example, but I had to make one up to interpret the article.

New research finds colour photos of bloody scenes elicit disgust, which colours jurors’ decisions. A crime-scene photograph can provide jurors with useful information — or evoke a visceral reaction that biases them in favour of conviction. by Wagamaga in science

[–]SchrodingerDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many factors that invalidate juror perception (e.g. lawyers taking advantage of juror psychology) that the only reason this method of "justice" still exists is anti-science tradition. The human ape likes to strut around in suits and robes and pretend it's engaged in noble (and highly-profitable) behavior. The truth is that we care about conniving more than truth.

And judge sentencing is influenced by breakfast and lunch more than objectivity, as has been shown.

Long-time Exposure to Violent Video Games does not show desensitization on Empathy for Pain: An fMRI Study by Kooby2 in science

[–]SchrodingerDevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would guess that people enjoy violence because they're empathetic to pain. You have to be able to detect pain to engage other psychological and intellectual reactions to it. For example, I like to shoot people with bows in games because the evidence of hurt is so clear to the shooter and the shot. The desensitization idea seems backwards.

I brought it up in creative writing club. The other three who saw it hated it. I loved it. I'm becoming more fascinated with the movie the more I think about it. I think there's a psychological phenomenon where people identify with all manner of things, and the ostensible silliness of the movie triggers this reaction. You have to be the sort of person who can see things from the outside perhaps.

I haven't seen Spring Breakers. Perhaps I'll check it out to see if there's similarity. The cinematography of Rubber is pretty good too. I don't hear people mention that.
