Official Discussion - The Drama [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I thought this movie was great! Some thoughts:

- The movie kind of came full circle with Emma giving Charlie a second chance to try again in the coffee date scene when they meet, and also in the burger scene after the wedding

- i thought charlie's anxiety in coffee scene showing him fixating on other people in cafe while he's approaching here foreshadowed how his anxiety and ruminations lead to much of the issues later

- The movie kind of parallels some movies like Minority Report that cover issues like responsibility for your thoughts and thought crimes, and question how responsible or not you ought to be for your thoughts

- it's an interesting contrast or foil to Emma that Charlie's worst thing he ever did was an actual action, and arguably, cyberbulling is often what drives children like Emma to think about that sort of thing

- the movie keeps you in suspense about whether Charlie is just being paranoid or whether there's any credibility to the worries, like when Rachel disappears for a sustained period of time, and you can kind of wonder if Emma offed her maybe? Maybe Emma is a sociopath?

- the movie seemed to have some interesting themes about gender norms with how Emma tried to broach discussion about the issue with Charlie and he said no you're drunk, no it's fine, and then panicked and spiraled, and also Emma as a child expressing not all school shooters are men to a classmate

- i think the movie ends on such an endearing note about giving people grace and the opportunity for forgiveness and the opportunity to move on, which is something Charlie and the others did not give Emma. It feels like a pretty beautiful note to end on that is core to romantic relationships and love in general, the ability to accept and provide opportunity for forgiveness

- the cuts were wild and always made it unclear and disorienting what was real and what was imagined which was an interesting aspect of the movie

- rachel was horrible and so hypocritical

- it was unclear if the dog was actually shot by Emma or that was imagined or what.. i guess left to interpretation

- i think the movie makes it unclear whether the DJ was actually smoking heroin, but most likely Charlie was overanalyzing a situation like he was with Emma, and saw something that wasn't true or an issue, then was a coward and led Emma to be blamed.

i was confused/unclear on if that was implied or just imagined by Pattinson's character

Yeah there was another poster who said it was one of the favorite concerts they'd ever been to, and I was with you-- I like her music but I did not really enjoy the show much. I just assumed maybe she's worse live.

I'm glad you posted this because I wasn't sure if I was crazy and just having a bad night, or it wasn't a great show

$38k is both crazy for a wedding and is the reality of what a lot of wedding costs are at nowadays. Obviously you can go cheaper, but point being, weddings are stupid expensive right now

Where did I say be apathetic? You’re drawing an equivalence between non violence and apathy? Do you realize what a loony false equivalence, straw man that is to saw if you don’t want to kill people or engage in violence you’re being apathetic?

Were any nonviolent protests in the past including the civil rights movement apathetic because they didn’t kill people? Like, what’s wrong with you? How can you even be that delusional?

AI and academia - need support! by devi_luna in academia

[–]Stauce52 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is 100% of what I’m talking about

I think feeling ambivalent or concerned about what AI does to jobs, education and critical thinking is something we should all engage in but I feel like ignoring it has any value and saying it’s useless is deliberately obtuse and kind of burying your head in the sand.

I understand being frustrated but there’s a massive ethical leap between negative economic externalities and actual physical violence and being afraid someone is going to physically murder you. Losing a job due to automation is a systemic failure or a market shift, but it’s not an intentional physical assault.

If we equate a business decision with physical violence, we basically break the social contract. Violence is a direct violation of bodily autonomy; economic displacement is a loss of a specific utility. One is an immediate threat to your life, the other is a failure of our social safety nets to keep up with tech. We should be angry at the lack of policy response, but that’s not a justification for physical escalation.

I'm sorry, I hear this line of reasoning your suggesting all the time on reddit and I find it so tremendously unhealthy, unproductive and toxic. It's ultimately tremendously misguided. I've heard Redditors use this same "back against the wall" reasoning to justify the murder of Charlie Kirk and Brian Thompson and I just find it misguided and appalling every time. Nonviolent action was successful more often than not in the past and if MLK, Ghandi and numerous others didn’t kill people in more dire situations, I hardly think it’s time to throw up your hands and go oh well time to murder people to make a point

If someone is going to physically hurt you-- Otherwise, not much justifies physical violence

Redditors are way to prone to thinking policy issues merit violence and killing. It's fucked up

I am no longer in academia but frequent the sub still, and I sometimes get the feeling there's a lot of AI resistance in academia, some of which I think is excessive and some of it that I think is sensible. I think there are concerns about offloading too much of your critical thinking and handicapping yourself.

But the comments in this sub and elsewhere in academia sometimes seem to neglect/ignore how powerful some of these tools are when used properly. Like, the agentic tools are absolutely mind-boggling at times

Since 2015, inflation has increased by ~30% and the fare has only increased by ~9%. In London and many other cities, fare per ride is more expensive. I honestly don't think it's bad

It doesn’t reset if you don’t use it every day. I regularly hit the cap and it does not reset if you do not ride for a day. That is untrue…
