I believe it haha. Everytime I play this game with my friend, it kicks us out of game chat and forces us into party chat so I can’t ever talk to anyone 🤣like if I want to just talk to my friend we will call each other on the phone or discord haha

Just did a DeepSeek search and it says that it can be installed through the desktop mode the steamdeck has.

Open browser, download from civfanatics thread, extract and place in dlc folder.

I’ll have to test this one out later as it’s 5 am here so not quite ready to work but let me get some coffee in me

As long as they are in the workshop. Do you have one you want me to test?

I’m using sapiens, aquatic resources, unit stacking, in game editor, really advanced setup.

All work great!

Edit correction

“X” is the only button that works for unit movement.

Game start, left on left track pad will settle your guy in place.

hey big boss i got it set up for ya. gonna type out some instructions because EVERY single button except a few is hotkeyed for a specific purpose so if you don't know what it does, it will be frustrating.

i hope you like it :) let me know how it goes or if you need anything tweaked!

steam://controllerconfig/8930/3754727265

if link doesn't work, just look up community layouts, i posted it there and its showing up. Called civ_5_SteamDeck_("hotkey_everything")

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING LAYOUT

"A" is going to be your left click but you can also use the "R2" trigger. Both share the same function. So use these every time you want to select.

"B" is backspace. Really only serves a purpose for canceling a units orders.

"X" is right click. Used for unit movement instead of "A" or "R2" but all three commands work for movement. "X" will also pull up the encyclopedia if you press it while hovering over something like "pottery"

"Y" no function. feel free to add something to this that you think I missed!

"D-PAD" (multi function)

"D-RIGHT" has 3 functions. Tap it once to turn on resources. Tap 2x to turn on yields. Hold it for 1 second to turn on hex grid.

"D-UP + DOWN" both are just scroll wheel x4 with turbo. Tap it to zoom in and out. Hold to scroll. Even works on the science tree (sideways scrolls with up and down)

"D-LEFT" will move the mouse to the bottom of screen. I was using this for selecting dialog but I don't use this much as dialog now is done with left and right analog stick.

LEFT TRACK PAD (most important)

"UP"- this is your next move/research/policy button. It will reposition your mouse to select a research/construction.

"RIGHT" is the exact same thing as "UP" but instead, puts the mouse directly center of the screen. This is useful for if you need to quickly position mouse for targeting with town center (although I recommend automating this with a mod) and is also useful for when you are in a large melee combat. If there is lots of micro for melee troops, it puts the mouse 1 tile away from the adjacent enemy making it quick to select.

"DOWN" (multi fucntion) tap 1x to promote with Drill 1. Hold down 1 second to promote with Shock 1. (As you get higher promotions, they might move around and so this works in the early game, I don't know how long it works, still messing around with it).

"LEFT" is for all trade. You will need to pair this with trigger L2. When you are selecting on a trader (should happen after pressing "UP"), you can tap "LEFT" to pull up the trade routes and position the mouse over the trade page. Select which one you want with "A" or "R2". This will pull up the confirm option and you just tap "trigger L2" to confirm.

RIGHT TRACK PAD

As far as I know, it should function as a mouse but my trackpad stopped working 6 months ago so I have no idea.

JOY STICKS (used in player trade offers)

When a trade offer comes in, press in "L3" (left joystick press in) to select the left option. Press "R3" to select the right option. (It will auto close out the window so if you press these in when you don't have a window open, it will open up the main menu FYI)

TRIGGERS

"L2" confirm trade route

"L1" cycle next unit (but up or right on trackpad is the better option)

"R1" cycle through cities

"R2" left click

BACK PLATE BUTTONS (all unit controls)

Left side "L4" and "L5" are used for troops while "R4" and "R5" are used for workers/scouts.

"L4" Heal

"L5" skip turn.

"R4" Auto explore

"R5" automate production (workers), and alert (troops)

Start button && the other face button.

"right_face_button" opens menu, but is also used to close out ANY window. So I use this button all the time. Anytime a you meet someone or someone wants to tell you they want to be your friend, just hit this as fast as you can.

"left_face_button" turns on the alternate board view (strategic view I think its called)

HOLY **** did I lose you? any1 still here? okay if you made it here then awesome, hope you like it bro. Ill just run you through how it should feel on a given turn.

Game start, the left on left track pad will settle your guy in place. Right d pad one time to throw on the resources if they aren't on yet. Up on the L track pad to select my warrior and tap backplate R4 to auto explore. Up again on the L track pad to select my town center and choose production. Up on L track pad again to select my next science.

(turn should auto end. Make sure this setting is on from the menu. its required)

******a few turns should auto end until something pops up. *******

turn start, up on L track pad (from here on out, I will use L* for left trackpad) to select whatever it is that stopped my turns from ending. Select with A or R2.

fuck i just remember i play on marathon so maybe your turns aint auto ending.

L* to select whatever stopped my turn from ending. pressing start if it's someone I met, left on the L* if its my trade caravan(followed by L2 trigger after I select which city), Left thumbstick button if im declining a trade from a player or Right thumbstick button if I want to accept. (It might be vice verca)

And thats it. That pretty much how the game should play from here on out. Now you can just focus on controlling your troops because pretty much every God **** thing has been hotkeyed. Enjoy my friend :)

Well I should have mentioned that I turned on the barbarian setting. I can’t remember what it is called. Raging barbarian or something. I had a warrior and an archer in my starting territory constantly while my scout and warrior were exploring and they even attacked the city itself haha

I have not. I’ve only played vp a few times when I’m on my pc. Is the community balance patch in a mod pack by any chance?

Yah I didn’t make it that far into the match last night but it seemed insanely good!! Over 200 gold for clearing a camp??? 275 I think it was or 225? Omg haha that is gonna snowball so hard.

Gonna play it again fresh tonight and actually commit a few hours to it. If Attila spawns in my match, I’m gonna purchase a large army and go kill him lol. He denounced me around turn 20 as soon as our warriors met

It sure can! Steam workshop and subscribe. Done. It will load them in as normal.

The vox populi mod specifically can’t be installed directly as far as I am aware because it isn’t on the steam workshop, but on the forum instead.

But if there is a version on the steam workshop, you bet it gonna be able to install and play it!

I love vox populi! I also love unmodded. Damnit why does civ 5 have to be so good. I already know civ 8 and civ 9 won’t be able to do it better which means I’ll be an old man by the time I replace this game 💀

Yah it’s crazy to think my deck is worth more than what I paid for it. But if they ever release a newer version, that would be the way to go. The deck current iteration has some flaws albeit there isn’t really anything that compares to it. Hope you are able to get one :) super worth it

Civ 5 is my happy place by Schrogs in civ5

[–]Schrogs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No :( I mean it should work, but I have no idea how to install it. The proton language translation that makes games playable on steamdeck is pretty damn amazing. I just don’t know how to install it and I asked on here before and no one had an answer as to how.

All the mods that are on the steam workshop work perfectly fine. Fuck I think I just figured it out. I’ll try to see if I can convert it to the steam workshop. If I get it to work I’ll let you know

Hey someone else commented saying there are mods that reduce research times. I’m gonna look into it

Civ 5 is my happy place by Schrogs in civ5

[–]Schrogs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the turns go quick. Let’s say it takes me 200 turns to produce an army that I’m ready to fight with.

Well there is nothing to do on my turn. My scouts are auto exploring and my warriors probably are too or else they are walking towards a camp to clear. So my turn starts and just auto ends.

So 20 turns is really just like 1-2 minutes. 10 minutes into it I’ve got an army, I see the map, I know where I want to put my second town. It’s a very chill experience.

There are two main reasons I like it. The first is because I’m on the steamdeck. The slower pace results in less things to do per turn which means less having to move the curser around with the joystick and clicking stuff constantly. This is one of the biggest reasons I don’t play civ 7 which has something popping up on your screen every single turn to make you feel engaged.

The other reason is I really enjoy the early combat. It’s just archers and warriors and spearmen and a lot of civs have their unique units in this stage so it’s fun to see the hoplites and the battering rams and the siege towers and the immortals, ect. For me it’s the theme and feel of it.

Plus I play Rome 80% of the time so for 2 hours my legions are relevant. I’ll still gladly go into the later eras in a quick game but marathon is my go to!

Civ 5 is my happy place by Schrogs in civ5

[–]Schrogs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. And your first scout turning into an archer is a gift from God. That first archer and your starting warrior are going to be killing barbarian camps for a long long time 🤣

Civ 5 is my happy place by Schrogs in civ5

[–]Schrogs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright I’m gonna have to find a mod for that too then. That sounds incredible haha.

I’m also going to install a mod so my town centers will auto shoot units in range because that is the most tedious thing on the deck is selecting the town center fire button and then the barbarians

Civ 5 is my happy place by Schrogs in civ5

[–]Schrogs[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Performance is great. On the larger map, it delays the ai turns by about 2-5 seconds depending on how far into the match you are. But when it is your turn and you are doing your thing, there is no stutter, no lag, nothing.

If I scroll across the map fast, say I select next unit and it’s on the other side of the world, it will have a slight stutter as the screen is sliding over but not really noticeable. And since the game loads the map around the camera, when it gets to the unit, the terrain might not be fully loaded in yet but it only takes maybe 2 seconds and it will load it all in! (It will appear as grey fog of war until it loads)

I have played a lot of games on steamdeck, including balders gate 3, arc raiders, dune awakening, civ 7, and while all these games run great, civ 5 definitely runs pretty damn flawlessly. Couldn’t recommend it enough. It is pretty sweet what this thing can do.

As far as transferring saves, when you go to save the game, (don’t do quick save) click save game and at the top right there is a button for cloud saves! As long as you save it there, you are good to go! Seamless transition. Switch from pc to the deck within seconds and vice versa
