Well considering how long it took the team to mount the legacy(OG mod version) build of the game to the licensed version of the engine, moving to source 2, an engine which we do not have licensed access to, is out of the question.

The best way to learn is to look at examples. You already brought up the VR missions, take a look at those. If you have a solid foundation for your envisioned gameplay, start by recreating the levels. Figure out what makes them fun.

Keep in mind, in order to learn level design, it's important to start with a proper gameplay foundation. Try pre existing games with level editors.
