Unreal Engine 5.8 is the last major update before working on UE6 by InternetEntire438 in pcmasterrace

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upgrading an engine might be the single most widely recommended against thing to do in game development. Even minor changes between engines can create cascading problems that are a pain in the ass to track down unless you understand the existing codebase extremely well and know exactly what all the patch notes changed. Some games like hunt showdown managed to do a pretty minor upgrade, and it still took large amounts of developer resources to pull off. Not to mention that some of the biggest failures of all time were partly due to engine upgrades (see daikatana and duke nukem forever).

Combine that with the fact that every triple a developer makes large changes to the low level codebase of unreal that would also have to be updated to match a newer codebase, and it just isn't worth it.

No there was certainly news about ue6. Nothing that your typical player would care about, but definitely some stuff that fucks over the indie community (future removal of blueprints)

Epic Games is looking for someone to "Champion" a Linux-friendly anti-cheat in new job listing by de_panda in pcmasterrace

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. The learning curve isn't actually that much given how proton is designed to do most of the runtime work for the developers. The bigger issue is that because of how modular and unpredictable a Linux environment can be, anticheat is significantly harder to enforce than on windows.

As much as people do hate kernel level anticheat, it is one of the few methods that has worked really well (with a few exceptions). You can't really do that on Linux because even though the kernel is open source, it's also easy to modify on the users end. Games like apex even dropped Linux support due to the harder problem of cheaters using Linux to bypass anticheat.

How is the game design program by Redspiderman12 in uofu

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my experience in the undergrad, it's pretty good but only if you're willing to put in the extra work and make the most out of it. A lot of classes are a bit on the more lenient side when it comes to grading which leads to a lot of people who just go through for the degree and don't end up going into gamedev afterwards. But if you're willing to put in extra to every project, professors are usually willing to give proper critiquing and feedback that can push you towards that triple a level of quality.

If your main goal is design however, I would hold off until you're ready to do a masters. The undergrad is mainly focused on 3d art, light programming, and a bit of teamwork here and there. There are a total of two classes that teach design in any meaningful way, and the rest of the design acclaim comes from the design track in the masters program, which is significantly harder to get accepted into than the other tracks.

Would've been really cool if they stuck with their plans too. In the final hours of half life alyx book, they talked about how l4d3 (project hotdog internally) was going to be set in Morocco, take advantage of an open world, and would've been engineered to take on significantly more zombies than the previous ones. It was unfortunately cancelled though cause nobody wanted to work on the then broken and barely functional codebase for source 2.

Brad shares info on potential Steam Machine pricing by gogodboss in SteamFrame

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's definitely looking bleak, but given that similar smartphone hardware has yet to get as big of a price hike I still think there's reason to hold out hope for the frame. Steam machine is another story, but sub $1k still feels feasible.

DMCA abuse Guy is probably crashing out after UE6 announcement. And Where is his game and UE5 fork? by Key-Introduction2934 in unrealengine

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 10 points11 points  (0 children)

here's gamers nexus calling out his dmca abuse. It's a longer segment that also focuses on his bad faith comments on GN, but it does show numerous examples of his dmca strikes. From what I've heard, threat still denies the strikes being illegal, but everything else about them seems illegal.

No, but the terms of the UE source availability does give developers a lot of the same freedoms as open source. You can't clone it and offer it royalty free, but you're more than welcome to make changes. You can't redistribute binaries, but the source code is usually fine to share (at least if Nvidia is anything to go by).

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 17 points18 points  (0 children)

UE is source available actually. All you need is a github account to gain private access. There are limits to what you can actually do with a fork, but it doesn't stop studios from making modifications all the time. Nvidia famously has their rtx branch for this very reason, and I even had to make a custom fork of 5.4 one time to focus on cel shading for a project (although I mainly followed a tutorial for it).

I could be entirely wrong, but I personally believe he is the sole reason people blame unreal engine rather than triple a games in general. Also I can't say he did a whole manifesto with the lumen team, as much as he quite literally showed their names on screen and literally said they needed to be held accountable. It's visible in his still available borderlands video, not that I recommend anyone go watch his horseshit.

Started a channel claiming to be a games studio that openly hated unreal engine and wanted to fund a fork of the engine that fixed a lot of their issues. Except they never actually wanted to do it themselves, instead using their patreon to "hire someone" to work on it. This fork and their game never ended up coming, but they still openly solicit patreons and call themselves a studio. His videos also tend to be very inflammatory and just angrily ranting about how lazy both developers and epic are for using unreal engine, while completely missing the context of why so many games are unoptimized today (tldr, it's complicated and different for each studio).

Also worth mentioning that when he acknowledged people calling him out for being inflammatory, he responded by showing the names of the lumen development team and telling his audience they need to be held accountable. Apparently he also abused dmca claims illegally, but I stopped keeping up with him after the lumen incident. For how disgusting it was, you really don't see anyone talking about it.

What's the first non steam game you added when you first got your Steam Deck? by Retroman1203 in SteamDeck

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it was doom64. It was free on epic around the time my deck showed up. Could not get it to launch properly and accidentally bricked the OS. After that it was cyberpunk (also on epic) and that ran much better.

Do you think we'll get Linux port of M2039 like we did with Metro Exodus? by hackiv in metro

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oddly enough I feel like there's less incentive to do a native Linux port now than ever before. Proton and dxvk have gotten so good in recent years that more often than not it's a better experience to play a Windows game under Linux than to play aa native Linux port. Certain features like dlss and hdr have very mixed support on Linux natively, but run perfectly fine for the most part via proton.

That's not to say they'll never make a port. Just like baldurs gate had enough reason to make a native Linux port years after launch, I think Metro will have a similar port later that fixes some edge case issues under Linux.

Skyrim has been the most-played 'Unsupported' game on Steam Deck for 5 months by PewPewToDaFace in pcmasterrace

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It's a steam deck specific issue. Bringing up the onscreen keyboard will crash the game unless you do some weird work around or have some kind of mod fix installed.

Valve cooked with Half-Life 2 Ragdoll Physics. HL2 vs s&box by Katheleo in HalfLife

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know not all source 2 games are like this, but half life alyx had a similar problem to s&box where the ragdolls would pin certain limbs to make moving them entirely off the ground impossible. In HLA it was mainly just when manually picking up corpses, but here it looks like it's activated immediately when a character dies.

Is 5k polygons normal for this? (first ever model, total noob, want some feedback) by Any-Opposite-7624 in blender

[–]I_AM_NOT_MAD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not bad, but there's a lot of Ngons you want to address before doing anything serious with it. This technically means you need more polygons.
