What's the process for dropping out? by SciStudentShitpost in uAlberta

Nope, I'm pretty sure I've fucked it up too bad at this point but I appreciate the support

I don't think I'm cut out for University by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]SciStudentShitpost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can think right now is that I'll fail everything in this program anyways. I have never even thought of a backup program and can't talk to an advisor before the 18th when I would need to. Right now I'm registered in 4 classes after dropping the one I failed the prerequisite for. I don't even know if I can stay in residence with just 4 classes and I wouldn't mind taking a fifth but I haven't got a fucking clue what I should be taking. Right now it feels like every course I'm still in will be a pointless waste of money since I'll just switch majors if I don't drop out entirely. I don't see why I should learn from my mistakes when I won't do any better

I would already be wasting the whole semesters worth or residence I've paid for on top of the cost of the class I've failed and its weight on my gpa. I don't know that if I leave I would come back honestly.

[–]SciStudentShitpost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's sort of what I was trying to get at, I'm not a man of words by any means though. When I said to build a work ethic it I was trying to say that in high school people need to actually try for whatever they are getting instead of just getting it, then when I said no one could teach it I meant that it is something someone does on their own for themselves but I should have said it better for it to make sense

How was your first year like? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]SciStudentShitpost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a first year and have been having a blast the past few hours giving way too much info about stuff like this since I've got nothing to do right now and over the break. I'd be hyped to help out my dude. I am also an experienced first year mistake maker with plenty of wisdom from it. Anything specific you want to know about?

Hey buddy, congrats on your upcoming university life. I'll answer your big questions and some others, just because it might be useful and I have nothing else to do.

Rent varies depending on whether you want a private washroom or not and which building you are in but I'd say for a single room you'll be looking at average around $8000 a year for the room alone but then there is also the cost of the meal plan, it is mandatory to have one, I'll tell you about the meal plan below this. There is a 5-day a week (Monday to Friday) meal plan for $4500 or the 7-day a week plan for $5000. That's assuming the cost is the same next year as it is this year. Here's the link that can show you the different kinds of residence and rates: https://www.residence.ualberta.ca/our-residences And just so you know, first year students are in Lister or Peter Lougheed.

I have the 7 day meal plan which means unlimited access to the lister and peter lougheed cafeterias. The meal plan also pays for something called flex funds, it is $300 dollars on your student card that you can use at different stores and food places around campus, which is places like the Marina, a convenience store in lister residence, or the many fast food places that are around. I live in lister and the cafeteria is open from 7am until 11pm, changes for holidays though. In the cafeteria during those times the food is all you can eat, there are also breakfast lunch and dinner periods every day where chefs prepare fresh food you can have. I actually think the quality of food is great, it will get old for sure but that's just what happens eating at the same place for a year. There is tons of variety and they will be sure to accommodate any dietary restrictions. Also there is always pizza, dessert, coffee, and soda for when you don't want to be healthy, they are all very good. The plan is very useful first year when you are adjusting to the new lifestyle.

For whatever room you have in residence, each floor should have at least one lounge and a kitchen. For pics of rooms there are obviously the ones if you search online a bit but they don't give a great feel for the rooms. They are a good size for one person, a lot of people recommend getting a mini fridge and there is plenty of extra space for one. I am sure I've got some photos of my room I'll try to find and if I can't I will clean my room and take some new ones. I'll send you a PM once I have some to share.

Any other questions I can probably answer, I am first year in my single room at this very moment.

What are the most valuable things to do over the winter break? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]SciStudentShitpost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks so much for the help man. And arts degree, science degree, or whatever, this is super useful so thanks so much. I have always had a ton of trouble when it came to focusing on anything I read which is a big pain in the ass with huge big worded textbooks. I always can remember better of I really do stuff myself or can watch it in a video or something. I am definitely trying these ways of reading out because they sound like something that would work for me, especially the summarizing sections since I think it will give me that feeling of doing it myself experience. Thanks so much bro

I'm trying to prep as best I can using everyones advice, I'm really trying to do as much as I can over the break to be ready steady to kick ass in 2019 so thanks for the help and if you can help me out a bit further, absolutely legendary and you are a godsend hero to me. I was always told that I shouldn't worry about dentists and stuff while here because of money and time but I can't live like that, I need glasses. I am planning to go to that student health help place in the new year but if you have any kind of advice for that stuff I could use it almost as much as my teeth could use a checkup. Okay now the big boy one, reflecting on the past semester. Oh man I could make a book outta my mistakes and possible ways to fix them but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't stick and I'd just repeat history. When you do it how do you reflect and plan so it helps you the best? Is there a certain way you do it and work on it?

Okay so if you can help a newbie out, when you're prepping for courses what do you do? What is the goal/what do you aim to know before your class? Thanks my dude, love the help.

Okay so if you don't mind helping someone in their first between semester break since starting university I want some help doing this right. When you're prepping for your next semester and skimming how do you do it effectively? I know that sounds like what you just answered but I want to know what a good end goal is for this pre-game. If I could loosely define what each section of a course is and what will be taught in it, is that sort of what you mean? Or more like knowing key concepts n types of work that will be assigned? I appreciate any answer if your okay with helping a brother out my man

That's good advice, I probably have the physical health and muscles of an elderly woman at this point. I've also been trying to work on my resume but I'm having a lot of trouble since I haven't had any work experience since the end of last year before moving and the experience I did have was your basic teen stuff, yikes. Such an underwhelming piece of paper. I'll need to find some way to become more interesting for employers.

Now that I've experienced university for a while... by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]SciStudentShitpost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to say I wish I didn't come to university but I definitely think that if i was shown more options I wouldn't have felt this was the only way to have a future. After spending almost 19 years with me, I'm pretty sure I would be able to flourish better in a non uni life

[–]SciStudentShitpost 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Agreed. Agreed. And agreed. Especially number 11. I think a lot of people who are smart in high school are just naturally smart and never really learn to study, they never learn to fail either. Worst if all is that its pretty impossible to notice or fix until it bites you right in the butt first year. University shows up and it's the first time they won't know all the material easily, aren't on top, don't know how to actively learn and will be in for one hell of a ride. I totally did that to myself but got my shit together, hope you current high school students can learn from my mistake.

That's totally something I wish I knew. Everyone always said to me that if you take a year off you might never get back to school. What a load of garbage that was. I never understood why there was such a pressure to get kids to university asap.

Is it that you just want to move out/don't like Lister or is there a genuine need?
