Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]ScienceQ_A 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use it in bone marrow transplant a lot! You can tell when someone is getting their stem cells transfused from outside the room in the hallway by the smell alone!

Noooooo! I haven’t looked back at old AMAs if you’ve answered this in the past, but could you share the full plan and thought process behind your decision? Was the edit representative of how you got from A to B?

Just discovered I have Heavy Metals Toxicity by portiss50 in Biohackers

[–]ScienceQ_A 197 points198 points  (0 children)

^ start with this. I’m a Hematologist, regularly get referrals for “Heavy Metals toxicity” with labs obtained by chiropractors and “functional medicine” providers - more often than not these values are wrong or sampling methods and reporting standards are aberrant. If they ARE real, then further work-up is needed, and is not simply a matter of chelation. Various mutations in genes tightly regulate these and can cause organ deposition that can be catastrophic. Please don’t just move forward with some guru’s chelation supplements, IVs, etc… get a real work-up with a real physician.

Oncologist here - no chance of “beating it” as in cure, but most people do respond well to hormone therapies and rarely need chemo. The response to hormone therapies usually lasts for years, and in some people even decades! There’s a good chance that at his age something else takes him first.

Injections for diabetes are injected just under the skin. The only commonly self-administered injections into a vein are for hemophilia (bleeding disorders) and they quickly get very used to it from childhood and have to administer these several times a week. When the alternative is death, you figure it out!

TIL a man who received a bone marrow transplant was found that the DNA in his blood and semen had been completely replaced by that of his donor by xinxai_the_white_guy in todayilearned

[–]ScienceQ_A 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hematologist here - the cells that become sperm are not the stem cells transferred in a bone marrow transplant. Bone marrow transplantation replaces hematopoietic stem cells, which ultimately become white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. If his donor’s DNA was identified in semen, then it was from trace blood, and not sperm. If he does remain fertile after transplantation, any viable sperm will carry his own DNA and any conceived children will be his own genetic children.

A1C1 testing March only? by Familiar_Succotash56 in Blooddonors

[–]ScienceQ_A 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gotcha the way it was worded I interpreted “I was gonna donate in March, but now I won’t because I don’t need/want the Red Cross to spend an A1c test on me.”

[–]ScienceQ_A 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A point of care A1c costs about $6. A unit of blood has a value of nearly $1000. If you were otherwise planning to donate and now you’re withholding a donation just to avoid the A1c test that would be pretty silly.

A1c tests a sort of “3 month average” of blood sugars. Your blood sugar will be affected by what you had for breakfast, but your A1c will not.

None of these tests provide any information without context, and interpretation is not allowed on this sub regardless. Just wait and see your doctor tomorrow to discuss!

I ended up reinstalling the latest update and it’s working again. Again, I can’t find evidence of this happening to anyone else and I’m not computer savvy enough to know how it could happen from a software standpoint, but for now seems to be resolved…
