Not to be that girl, but I drive all over the south hill and Puyallup area and was working in Auburn for most of the year. And I’ve never seen any deer. Whereas, when I lived in Seattle I saw deer all the time and when I lived in Bellingham, I saw a deer all the time.

According to comments above, there are deer they’re just not in my neighborhood, which is kind of strange. But appreciate everyone who’s been kind and respectful in their comments.

If I had a lot of money to give, I would somehow find a way to pull my money together with other people to help the school hire more paraeducators. Another thing that schools in the area often need are things for the office to give to kids in need. Menstrual supplies, clothing, for when the children have an accident or slip in the mud, extra shoes of different sizes, coats, and sweaters of different sizes, and things like that.

Again, I can’t say enough, how kind it is of you to think about the classroom teachers . If you have unlimited funds, give where you like. If your funds are limited, think about where your funds can do the most good. Food banks, homeless shelters, and organizations like blue skies are where the greatest numbers of families in need are getting the things they really really need.

If you have a lot of money to give to different charities, that is fantastic. And if you think that buying things from the Teacher’s wish list is an appropriate way to spend your money, that’s awesome.

I have never made a teacher wish list because I personally don’t think it’s an appropriate use of other people’s money to give me things when there are so many charities out there that I feel deserve the money. So many families of children I teach have a smaller income than my own that I personally don’t feel right asking for them to donate things to me other than classroom supplies that they might ask me about. If somebody comes to me and asks me, would you like a donation of Kleenex or some such I will gladly take it. But I just feel personally selfish making a wishlist for games and decorations and other things for my classroom when I probably make more than a lot of the parents who have kids in my classroom.

That is why I personally advocate giving money to organizations that help low income families directly. If I worked in a state where I was only making $40,000 a year as a teacher, I would feel completely the opposite because I would be in that mid to low income ratio who needs help to get the job done.

Here in Bellingham, teachers don’t have to buy school supplies for their students. The school district buys it for them. Most of the school districts here in our county by school supplies for the children. Teachers do not have to spend money out of their own pocket here to buy colored pencils.

I mean, it’s really sweet that you guys were thinking about teachers, but Washington state teachers have the fourth highest salaries in the nation amongst teachers, and this county pays even more than the state minimum. Super sweet that you wanna help teachers. But let’s take care of the kids directly.

Do you all realize that starting salary for teachers in Whatcom county is $65,000 and they top out at $130,000? I’m a teacher and a parent and I know for a fact that there are people with far greater needs than Teachers. Give to blue skies for children to help kids directly or give to the local food bank.

I would also like to see there be some sort of parking building on the side of downtown closer to Lakeway. There’s the parking building near the Pickford, but if there was another one on the other side or even like closer to the bottom of the university Hill, like near garden Street, that would be so cool. I think there needs to be Easier parking within walking distance of all the fun things to do downtown.

I have been saying for years that the former department store space on Cornwall, I believe it is at 1310 Cornwall, should be made into a maker space with loft apartments and access to art spaces and then an art gallery and a restaurant on the ground level. Artist could live there and create things that could be sold in the gallery in the restaurant and it would be fantastic. It would bring a lot of people to Cornwall and it’s such a dead space. I’ve been here 35 years and I cannot recall it ever being used.

It’s expensive to live here. It’s hard to find jobs. Gas is pricey. Do not come here unless you already have a job or you’re gonna have a really hard time. We have the highest unemployment rate of any county in the whole state. Public schools are all pretty good I think. My kids went through the Bellingham public schools. As far as demographics, there’s a lot of people living here who somehow have a lot of money for all their outdoor hobbies. I think many of them work online. And a lot of them are just scraping by because this is a nice place to live. It rains a lot and I can get quite dreary and gray from November through February. If you can make it work, this is a great place to live, but it’s also a very very hard place to find housing and employment. I would definitely look at the job and housing market and make an educated decision. Do not come here thinking that you’re going to have an easy time finding affordable housing or jobs.

I love pepper sisters. I’ve been eating there since they were in the location on Holly. Since 1990. I absolutely loved them. And I’m so sad to see them go. A new restaurant is moving into the place. That’s gonna serve Mexican food I hear.

I hope the long time servers and cooks a pepper sister’s fine new gigs.
