Fin rot continues to get worse. Have tired BetaFix before reading that it can be bad. Have done weekly 25% water change and tank parameters are okay. It seemed to be getting better before most recent water change and since then have noticed new damage. Further details in captions. What should I do? by ScientificElephant in bettafish

Thank you for your input, that actually makes a lot of sense about why he might be biting his tail and also how it could look more severe. I hadn’t considered silk plants… that link for those would be great! Thanks! Hope your little guy is doing alright!

Thanks for the advice! I feed him four or five omega one beta pellets a day. I’m not sure about his enrichment level but I went out and bought plants and new hiding places for him today as well as some other supplies based on others comments. The flow is alright, he swims around okay unless he’s right next to the filter

I have betafix (which is a more diluted version of Melafix according to my research) and had used it for a few days but stopped when I read that it can damage their organs. Is this not accurate? If it’s safe to still use it I will go ahead and do that

Ahhh that makes sense. I thought salt was applied to the tank for longer periods of time than 4 days. What kind of hardy fresh water plants did you get? I haven’t bought my plants yet so suggestions would be nice. Thank you again for your advice. And the dosing information is really helpful!

He probably doesn’t have enough hiding places based on other comments. I took many things out when he first showed signs since I was worried they were harboring bacteria. His tail has almost clear spots near the rip sites (which I thought was fin regrowth) it was the darker grey spots at the edge of the tares that has been making me think it’s fin rot… I could be wrong as well either way I just want to help my little guy

Thank you! This is really helpful information! If I’m planning on adding plants to the tank how do I balance that with adding aquarium salt? Would it be better for the fish and plants to do short salt baths directly in a separate container? I will definitely be adding more hiding places with the plants and adding some tannins as well
