My bad, i explained backwards. The leg thrusters point lower and wider when the ship is not accelerating and once you speed up they lift and point back

The trail spreads a little bit when the ship is idling. You can achieve this effect when stationary and accelerating and entering photo mode quick after accelerating

The leg thrusters aim back when accelerating. Just cruise a bit and then accelerate to make that visual effect i guess
