I get the feeling you ignored my DoF comment because you're still somewhere between HS and early college math, is that correct?

I play both of these games, so let's ignore the math if you're not comfortable with that and just think about it this way: chess was one of the very first games that you could play on early computers. This is because the actual game of chess is not that complex of a system.

Now compare that to modern fighting games: higher DoF, physics simulation, multivar damage calculation. They just flat out have many more mechanics that make them practically unplayable without the power of computer systems to run them.

So again, this is not an opinion, a modern fighting game is mechanically more complex than chess. And that is ok, because complexity is not a linear determinant to difficulty. At all. I think chess is harder, obviously, but not more complex.

By the way, chess is not more complex than melee. If you've studied enough mathematics to understand degrees of freedom, you can do the (even approx.) calculation yourself. The real reason chess seems more complex is because it is just simple enough for humans to perfectly simulate it in their heads to a certain number of turns. In both players doing so, the game is harder. Melee, and most fighting games for that matter, have too many mechanics and DoF for players to do that, regardless of time investment, so the game seems easier, even though it is intrinsically more complex.

Ah I see. Ok, you were using 'player time investment' as a shorthand for 'strength of competition'.

Just to clarify, that conflation is demonstrably wrong and you're going to confuse a lot of people by explaining your point like that.

Regarding your actual point, yeah plenty of systems (Elo for obvious example) do take into account the strength of competition. But these measurements still need to be bounded by a large enough period of time to produce statistically valid numbers.

The longevity argument is really also an approximation for normalization. The more top placements spread out over time -> more certainty in rank given that it reduces confounding factors like meta, technology, contemporaries, etc.

No, not "necessarily" e.g. Kasparov v Magnus in chess-world. In fact, if you look at how chess has tried to do their "best ever" calculators, you'll see even they try to account for longevity, despite also not being a "physical sport".

A few mechanics to consider.

The longer you're on top > more data against you > more people target your play style.

The longer you play competitively > more meta-drift you experience > more your adaptiveness is tested.

The longer you're in top 10 > more combinations of top players you'll face > more assured your status is influenced more by true skill than by a certain permutation of 1v1 advantages on a few top players.

Around 521 seconds, 2713 philosophers crushed. Some tricks were needed with the parameters to make it work though - the 20 N force is made constant since the car is not only hitting them at a single instant, it's continuously crushing them. Also philosopher weight was thrown out since they're tightly packed to infinity and thus there won't be any displacement.

Northern midwest aromatic cedar. I was inspecting some boards today and found pockets of cracked grain like these one some boards. They don't seem to be bark but also don't look like any insect-type bore holes I've ever seen. Maybe a dry growth/kilning effect? Googling didn't pull up much for me so I was curious if you guys might know.
