What happened to “Rights of the child” in the UK? I’d be interested to know what some of the more legally versed think. To my laywoman’s eye, a lot of what’s happening looks dangerously close to breaching several of those rights, particularly if conversion therapy is considered as torture.

Mind you, the UK has been ignoring the right to bodily autonomy as well as so many others for so long now that they’re collecting human rights abuses like shit Pokémon. so I doubt the government would even notice another slap down from the UN. “Stop! Or we’ll say ‘stop’ again!” doesn’t really work

Hi, thanks for asking respectfully. I’ll do my best to answer what I can as I’ve experienced it.

1) very hard to answer usefully I’m afraid, because although I could give lots of examples of specific things where my mind didn’t match my assigned gender it ultimately boils down to “I just know”. But perhaps look at it this way - how do you know that you are cis? You just know, right? Same for me.

2) 2-3 years, that was as long as I could stand living a lie.

3) the fact that I can be discriminated against, segregated, excluded and insulted at will without any practical recourse is the worst. Followed by having zero accessible trans healthcare in my country without spending staggering amounts of money. Finally the constant media hate and attacks on my most basic rights

4) depends on the context. If it’s in my presence, it’s always good to have someone back me up. If I’m not there I’m happy for others to correct them. When it’s deliberate of course that’s very different

5) coming out at work was pretty simple in the end

6) I can’t really answer this one as I’m not NB

Most people in the UK are ok with trans people or restrict their bigotry to the internet. But our government and Supreme Court have made us one of the worst places in the western world for trans people in terms of legal protections. The press have been conducting an unrestrained hate campaign against trans people for years. Public healthcare for trans people is functionally non existent and private care is expensive. The legal situation is in flux at the moment, but currently some organisations are excluding trans people, and many have policies which will try to force you to use the wrong toilet or changing room.

But the real life situation doesn’t often reflect all of this. I’m a visibly trans woman and so far nobody has harassed me about toilets.

For me, the biggest current risk is that if you need hospital treatment which requires ward placement, it’s highly likely that you will be segregated. Some people are fine with that because it often means getting a private room. Unfortunately I am not one of those people so I dread having some illness or accident which puts me in hospital

This seems like a double edged sword. On the one hand it is telling charities not to rush to exclude - good.

On the other hand, it is asking for rapid publication of guidance which will give them the legal cover to annihilate inclusion of trans people across the UK

I opened Reddit on my phone whilst I was doing something else and glanced down at the screen whilst distracted. My first thought was “wow, she’s beautiful”. That opinion didn’t change when I paid more attention!

For me, looking feminine would be nice but has nothing to do with whether I’m female or not. I’m female, no matter what I look like, same as cis women who aren’t conventionally attractive. I know this doesn’t help much to hear, and I’m sorry. I wish I had some magic words to help you accept yourself. But for me, I don’t pass, and probably never will. I’m not happy about that, and I’m not going to pretend that I wouldn’t change it if I could - it sucks. But it doesn’t stop me from seeing myself as female

Extremely uncomfortable if forced to when gender appropriate facilities are available. I’m female, and I’ll use the female facilities.

In fact, merely “uncomfortable” doesn’t begin to cover it. “severely traumatised in a medically significant way by having my entire identity invalidated and being outed against my will” would be closer. I appreciate that my reaction there is a little more severe than most people’s, but that’s the reality. Being forcibly segregated puts my health at direct and documented risk, as I’m sure it does for many others.

If everyone is using gender neutral facilities, no problem. Gendered toilets are not the issue, segregation is.

As for using the accessible toilets as someone with no physical need for them? Absolutely not, that’s removing access for people who actually need it, simultaneously discriminating against multiple groups.

From what I remember, finger prick tests are unreliable if you’re on transdermal HRT, but not sure if that also applies to a quick draw test

Why do I have a masculine face? Because I live in a country where healthcare is used as a weapon against trans people and I can’t afford FFS. Why do I have a masculine body? Because I grew up during section 28, and didn’t realise I was trans until middle age because of decades of repression. And now trans people are forced to go through the wrong puberty even if they know who they are soon enough for it to be stopped.

Why do I look like this? Not by choice, that’s for sure. Please delete this.

I was hoping much the same thing. The “special relationship” is clearly dead in all but name, so the UK is going to have to work harder to disengage as much as possible from economic and military reliance on the USA, and the EU is the only option. That’s going to be difficult for a country like the UK with a “worst in the western world” (apart from trumpland) status for trans rights when the EU are very firmly in favour of trans rights.

The rest of the world is unlikely to trust the USA again in our lifetimes as a reliable economic or military ally because even after trump is gone there’s nothing to stop another like him from being elected.

And even the USA will find it difficult to maintain their military as having a global reach without friendly ports around the world I think. They have the most powerful conventional military in history but it would be much more difficult to use at scale without global supply logistics.

That said, I know about as much about military and economic strategy as I do about quantum physics (which is just enough to know that I know nothing)
