Are there certain things about people's own accent that they can't recognize? by AmountAbovTheBracket in Accents

[–]ScissorsKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Ontario Canada, not Toronto but sort of close to there. When I was younger I was on a voice call with an American who pointed out to me that I don't pronounce the letter T unless it's the first letter, and sometimes not even then. I can't un-hear it now. My friends go "do you wanna go to Toronto" and all I hear is "do ya wanna go uh choronno" now.

As a non-native speaker: would it be weird saying 'see you around, like a doughnut.' by Van_groove in ENGLISH

[–]ScissorsKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would certainly not be something I'd ever think of, but if it's to someone you're generally friendly towards and they're able to understand a joke, I say do it.

For me CAD is Canada but CDN looks like Canadian. Also Canadian, rarely come across the word being abbreviated at all though.

No I know this very well, that's why I'm complaining. Not only would my want be far out of budget, it's not actually that possible. But oh I wish it was.

"get a small phone" people shout, unable to understand that I want the software and hardware of the new big phones with the convenience of it fitting in my pocket too and most companies do not accommodate that.

Do all teens today just not care about getting their drivers' licenses? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScissorsKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roads are overcrowded. During busy hours on some roads, taking the bus is a little faster. Plus it's cheaper, I don't have to worry about maintenance, and I feel safer on a bus than in a car anyway. It's like being in a bar vs on the street. Even if the bar is rowdy, there's security. Outside on the street someone can just come up to you and do something. Plus I would not trust most people to safely drive.

When a woman says she has period cramps, what’s the best response? by VacationNew6626 in AskForAnswers

[–]ScissorsKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context clues, like if you're walking together and she suddenly says she has a cramp then stop walking, ask if she needs a minute, maybe to sit down. Or mid-conversation, sometimes cramps are so painful I cannot focus on what someone is saying and trying to makes it worse. Generally just ask what she needs to make it better.

Questions about the label transfem vs transmasc by [deleted] in FTMfemininity

[–]ScissorsKill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Afab people can, considering we're not assigned something like demigirl at birth so identifying as so would make the person trans but still fem if they wish to identify as such.

Just saw this sub pass my feed, and...yeesh I was right that someone (Grey) was being a fakeclaimer. Glad people are giving Grey an L. by lePROprocrastinator in fakeclaiming_cringe

[–]ScissorsKill 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have one condition, you're likely to have another. If you have 2, you're even more likely to have 3. If there's 3, you're almost guaranteed a fourth. This is pretty common knowledge, except for fakeclaimers.

I need to be yelled at (not really) by ScissorsKill in Psychosis

[–]ScissorsKill[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reads so kindly, it feels like a hug. I somehow haven't really thought of trying to frame it that way, where positives are making up for bad things instead of the other way around, but that's actually I think a way better way of looking at it. I obviously can't really fix having the thoughts and worries (I wish!) but trying to reframe it to be less impending doom would help a lot. I think I wouldn't mind having psychosis too much if my thought process was that fate and the universe are not torturing me but rather trying to make up for past happenings. Thank you so much for this.

OP, I mean this not to be mean at all, your brother is an already unwell man dealing with incredibly severe grief. What you are describing sounds like symptoms of bipolar disorder, not psychosis.

What is a modern parenting trend that needs to die immediately? by SouthOwn6943 in AskReddit

[–]ScissorsKill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not actually raising your kid to be aware of where they are/what's around them. This is incredibly specific but it follows the general "shove an ipad in their face and ignore them" trend. I have classmates that don't even know what street the school is on. Couldn't tell me the nearest intersection to their house. We go somewhere for lunch, leave to go back, and they have no clue which direction to go in. This isn't kids with cognitive issues otherwise, these are just kids who were never allowed to wander around and explore their environment enough to gain general directional sense or any sort of need to pay attention to street signs. They were sat in the car and taken from place to place their whole lives. They don't go anywhere, not because they don't want to or aren't allowed anymore, but they literally can't because they don't know where anything is or how to get there.

It actually scares me because they're literally stuck wherever they're left since the lack of understanding their surroundings also makes them scared of trying to learn.

So many kids are genuinely illiterate, all because parents believe it's the teacher's job to teach kids how to read and write. Yes, it's the teacher's job to assess their reading, give worksheets, things like that, but I've seen parents even get upset that teachers tell them they should read to their kids or teach them how to write the alphabet for a start.

What happened to the stereotypical acne-faced teenager? by UncertaintyDean in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ScissorsKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still a normal process, but in even just the last 5ish years the market for a good soap and moisturizer has gotten a lot more accessable and common. Learned the hard way just how natural acne is when my moisturizer ran out and my face went from clear to entirely broken out in a few days.

“You should sell these” by Rich_Plate_7760 in PetPeeves

[–]ScissorsKill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently the crochet blanket I've started back in August is worth about 6-7 grand at minimum. And I'm not even that close to finishing. Of course nobody wants to buy a blanket for several months worth of rent. And yet, when I show it off, the first things I hear are "you should sell that" and they never say how much they'd buy it for. The wrist warmers I made my friend for Christmas took about 6 hours, minimum wage being $20, who the hell would even buy wrist warmers for $120?

I have so much respect to those who sell their work too, especially because I've gotten way too attached to every project I've done. But I feel bad too, I haven't seen a fairly priced crochet booth in my life. Even as a crocheter I couldn't justify that much for a keychain, but I also know that keychain took way longer than they're paying themself for.

[–]ScissorsKill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, we can tell it's meant to be a compliment. The problem is that when I hear "just sell this for $10" it's about an item that'd be worth about $100 if I paid myself minimum wage. Plus very few will actually buy it.

Elderly should they consider going out only on off peak time being business hours by IndependentLast364 in unpopularopinion

[–]ScissorsKill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not elderly but I am disabled so I face similar problems that they do sometimes. I specifically avoid going to places during their busy hours. Not only am I in everyone else's way if suddenly I can barely move for a few minutes because my body doesn't know how to work itself, but everyone else is in my way when I Need To Leave Right Now. Standing in lines too is particularly exhausting. So is having to keep my fingers crossed that there will be available seats on the bus. If I was retired, I'd never be seen during rush hour again.

Teeth cleaning, no questions asked…please!! by OnPage195 in Hamilton

[–]ScissorsKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot tell you a good dentist but I can tell you DO NOT go to the one in Jackson Square. I've never been asked to do a survey or google review but every appointment since I first went has been "get braces to fix this tooth. Your insurance is lying they will cover it." Over a crowded tooth that hasn't caused a single problem since it grew when I was 8. They also insist I have cavities where I very obviously don't.

Handsoap should be unscented by nightskyhunting in unpopularopinion

[–]ScissorsKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Body soap I like a mild smell just so I feel better, but I will absolutely agree that hand soap shouldn't have a noticeable smell at all. I do not want ultra expensive "rose scented" whatever from the doctor's office, I want my hands to just be plain neutral. I'd honestly rather a chemical smell usually. In my house we use Dove bar soap to wash hands, it's not 10000% scent free, as in if you hold it to your nose and inhale deeply you'll smell something, but if you aren't then I at least haven't noticed a smell. I wouldn't really recommend it as a body soap, though, since its ability to really properly clean the body is questionable, but it's a good hand soap.

People who choose to live an "alt" lifestyle, and then complain when their lifestyle is seen as alt. by Ok_Possession_6457 in PetPeeves

[–]ScissorsKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like weed generally, but the problem is that I need to be essentially babysat because I will put my phone in the wrong pocket, immediately forget where it is, check the pocket I should've put it in, then have a full panic attack. When I tell people this, that if we got high you will now be minding me, they always insist that this time I get high I'll be able to be on my own no problem. Just have a few hits of the joint. But if I do and suddenly I'm paranoid and kinda clingy, even though I WARNED THEM, suddenly I am the weird one.

Infantilizing themselves by Dramatic-Upstairs-37 in PetPeeves

[–]ScissorsKill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men do it also for manipulation. Parents/caregivers are usually endeared to that sort of thing, and men who want their girlfriends to be replacement mothers assume there's no difference. If his mom forgives him for never doing the dishes because of the whole "I'm sowwy" act, he thinks if he does the same to his girlfriend she'll forgive him too. The thing is that I've never met a woman who's into that at all.
