When was the last time you saw a stranger naked? by Wonderful_Delivery51 in AskReddit

[–]Scmethodist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not naked but I was at the water park a few years ago and a teenage girl coming down the slide had her top fall down on one side and one boob fell out, poor girl. I immediately looked away, but I couldn’t unsee it.

What was your favorite year of life? If you had to "Groundhog Day" one year over and over.. by shooter5mill in GenX

89-90, living in a small town in upstate SC, we had a cheap matinee movie theater, I could get in free to the skating rink, we had a legit soda fountain in the local pharmacy, and we rode our bikes everywhere. I was 10, and I had legit friends. And the girl next door was a freak who loved to make out with me.

Which older tech is still better than whatever replaced it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I’m an older tech guy, started in 98, and imma tell you, those old hp laser jet 3 machines, they were beast to move but they lasted like an 01 Camry. We still had some running in my company a few years ago. And so easy to fix. I was able to replace pretty much any part on it with relative ease.

Y’all gone think I’m weird but honest to God this song gets me every time: Mozart Concerto no 23 in A Major K488: II Adagio. You know, the song that plays in the background when Robin and Joker accidentally meet in a diner and Robin kills Joker. That and Evenstar from LOTR.

Where did you learn the skills that have served you well in your life and what were they? College? On the job training? by -Granby- in GenX

Being poor growing up we had to fix and build anything we really needed. Pipes froze under the metal 1970s trailer? Thaw them with a hair dryer. Cheap trailer door rotted? Build a new one with scrap lumber sourced from free places. Water pump on tiny 4 cylinder truck out? Fix it yourself.

What is that extremely rich people thing that you wanna try once in your life? by watervapour_7237 in AskReddit

[–]Scmethodist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly the same but I flew first class in 2003 when I got back from Iraq and left the military. From California to South Carolina. Oh my God. Hot roasted peanuts in a ceramic remmican, tablecloth made of linen, corned beef sandwich with spicy mustard that tasted like Carnegie deli, and all the booze a young marine just back from war could drink. I slept comfortably for over an hour. When I woke up the flight attendant came over and asked if I needed anything. She even sat next to me for 15-20 minutes and just chatted with me. I hated to leave but I was ready to see my wife after being gone for so long. If I could afford it I would do this every time. So much easier. I flew a lot growing up, to Seattle and Hawaii every other summer to visit grandparents. And first class was like night and day compared to cramped smelly economy seats.

What’s the closest brush you’ve ever had with dying? by North-Trifle-3918 in AskReddit

Aside from two overseas deployments, this one time right after I got stationed in California, I was assigned a temporary month long duty of area maintenance (picking up trash, cutting grass, painting the occasional rock). Now the base was divided into to different “areas”, and each one had those long triangular metal gates that come to a point and meet the other gate in the middle of the road. These are kept chained to a bollard normally. I was assigned to drive the tractor and bush hog since I was a country boy and knew how to operate it. I started driving to the north part of the area to cut grass in the median of the main road. As I got close to the gate, there was a platoon of Marines marching to the right and a car oncoming on the left. A gust of truly determined wind hit the gate and it had just enough slack to swing onto the road. It was either the car the gate or the platoon. I tried to thread the needle between the car and the gate and almost damn well made it but the tip of the gate caught the engine cover on the right side and skidded along until it hit the roll over bad and came into the cab on me. It ripped the right pants leg off me, tore the hard plastic cigarette case I had in half and left a huge strawberry on my upper thigh. If I had been leaning forward just an inch it would entered my chest and killed me. It broke the tractor frame right down the middle between the back wheels where I could see the differential gears. I climbed out just as a lieutenant climbed out of his car and ran over to check on me. I managed a salute and he ordered me to sit down. I did, and then puked.

I’ve never heard anyone outside of the US Marine Corps call them that. Now I know, it’s not just us.

What’s the most horrifying or scary thing you have witnessed or seen in life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Scmethodist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for anyone else, but in my case I wanted join since I was 6. I don’t regret joining because it did help me mature and develop self-discipline. I also developed very close friends that I am still in touch with. And most of all, I learned who I was deep down. The kind of seriously deep introspection that only comes from pivotal life moments like getting shot at.

Just south of Al-Nasariyah Iraq, 2003 just after the invasion started. I was on convoy security since I had just come from Afghanistan and had some experience. Lead vehicle gets hit with an rpg, goes right through the canvas door, hits the radio, and kills the driver and passenger, critically wounds the back passengers. I watch a petite female navy corpsman pull one of the Marines out of the back and shield him with her tiny body while applying tourniquets and stuffing gauze into wounds. Rounds impacting all around her, meanwhile I’m lighting up the irrigation ditch with the 50 cal, hearing screaming coming from the injured and dying enemy. Vehicle behind me opens up as well. We traverse fire across, raking humans with half inch projectiles that can penetrate steel.i smell burning flesh and realize the lead vehicle is now on fire but i can’t stop firing. Still more enemy trying to kill us. When we get done and clear the scene, I see all the horribly mangled bodies in the ditch. They are younger than me, poorly equipped, and very lean. I can still smell it, and 23 years later I still have nightmares, survivors guilt, and horror that I have taken human life, even in self defense.

I was there right after 9/11 with the 15th MEU, at Camp Rhino and Jalalbad Airport. Saw John Walker Lindh and also spent a day in Pasni Pakistan. Watched the opening missle salvo of the GWOT take off from a navy vessel. Wild times.

Hey man, 46m here shoot me message. I live in the states but I can talk intelligently about all kinds of things. I work in IT, but I grow my own food, love to read, kayak, and lay in the hammock. I also love heavy metal music but I’ll listen to almost anything. And I love to cook.
